Many multiaxial fatigue failure criteria of materials are based on the critical plane approach [1, 2, 3]. In these criteria, it is assumed that the fatigue failure of material is caused by stresses and/or strains acting in one plane (called critical) within the material. The proper orientation of that plane in fatigue failure criteria based on the critical plane concept must be established for fatigue life calculation. Stochastic Fatigue Models for Efficient Planning Inspections in Service of Aircraft Structures

For important fatigue-sensitive structures of aircraft whose breakdowns cause serious accidents, it is required to keep their reliability extremely high. In this paper, we discuss inspection strategies for such important structures against fatigue failure. The focus is on the case when there are fatiguecracks unexpectedly detected in a fleet of aircraft within a warranty period (prior to the first inspection). The paper examines this case and proposes stochastic models for prediction of fatigue-crack growth to determine appropriate inspections intervals. Quantitative thermoelastic stress analysis by means of low-cost setups

Abstract A low-cost Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) experimental setup is proposed which uses an ordinary micro-bolometer and in-house developed signal processing scripts. The setup is evaluated by analysing the thermoelastic signal from a tensile and a SENT specimen made of stainless steel AISI 304L, and the bolometer performances are compared with those of a state of the art photon detector. Signal processing is based on off-line cross-correlation, using a self-reference signal which is retrieved from the acquired thermal data. FATIGUE FAILURE CRITERIA FOR MATERIALS UNDER RANDOM TRIAXIAL STATE OF STRESS

SUMMARY Five fatigue failure criteria are formulated for a random triaxial state of stress whose components have zero mean values. It is assumed that fatigue failure is determined by the stress and strain components that act on an expected fracture plane. It is shown that in some special cases the proposed failure theories reduce to classical theories applied for sinusoidal stresses.

This paper presents a comparison of three post-weld treatments for fatigue life improvement of welded joints. The objective is to determine the most suitable post-weld treatment for implementation in mass production of certain crane components manufactured from very high-strength steel. The processes investigated are: burr grinding, TIG dressing and ultrasonic impact treatment.
