Fatigue Design Methodology for Large Mooring Chains Subjected to Out-of-Plane Bending
2014
The present paper presents a fatigue life prediction method for chains subjected to tension and Out-of-Plane-Bending (OPB). The investigation was carried out on a high strength mooring chain segment with a diameter of 165 mm and a steel quality R5. Such chains are used in mooring systems for large Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units in harsh weather condition. Due to the fact that the mooring chains are pre-tensioned the wave induced displacements will introduce secondary bending effects about the weak axis in the chain links, particularly in the bilge hang-off area. In such chains both conventional tension fatigue and fatigue damage accumulation due to Out-of-Plane-Bend…
Comparison of the Rain Flow Algorithm and the Spectral Method for Fatigue Life Determination Under Uniaxial and Multiaxial Random Loading
2008
This paper presents the strain energy density parameter used for fatigue life calculation under random loading by two methods. The first method is based on schematization of energy parameter histories with the rain flow algorithm. The other one is based on moments of the power spectral density function of the energy parameter. The experimental data of fatigue tests of 10HNAP steel under constant amplitude and random uniaxial loading with non-gaussion probability distribution, zero mean value, and wide-band frequency spectrum used for comparison of the rain flow algorithm and the spectral method gave satisfactory results. Next, histories of the random stress tensor with normal probability di…
Effects of Central and Peripheral Fatigue on Impact Characteristics during Running.
2022
Fatigue and impact can represent an injury risk factor during running. The objective of this study was to compare the impact transmission along the locomotor system between the central and peripheral fatigued states during running. Tibial and head acceleration as well as shock attenuation in the time- and frequency-domain were analyzed during 2-min of treadmill running in the pre- and post-fatigue state in eighteen male popular runners (N = 18). The impact transmission was measured before and after a 30-min central fatigue protocol on the treadmill or a peripheral fatigue protocol in the quadricep and hamstring muscles using an isokinetic dynamometer. The time-domain acceleration variables …
Concurrent and lagged effects of counterdispositional extraversion on vitality
2020
Abstract There are two contrasting perspectives on the effects of state extraversion. One states that people benefit from behaving extraverted, regardless of their level of trait extraversion. The second entails that behaving concordant to one’s trait is natural while deviations from the trait level— counterdispositional behaviors—are effortful to maintain, leading to mental fatigue. We test the possibility that both perspectives are correct, with beneficial effects of high state extraversion showing immediately, while the depleting counterdispositional effects are delayed. Experience sampling data from 67 employees (N = 1,664), shows that extraverted behaviors are associated with high leve…
Evaluation of crack-closure by second harmonic thermoelastic stress analysis
2022
The work illustrates a new experimental approach to evaluate crack-closure in samples undergoing Fatigue Crack-Growing. Crack-closure leaves a peculiar signature on both amplitude and phase of the harmonic of the temperature signal at twice the loading frequency (Second Harmonic), due to the periodic nature of the internal elastic compression stresses. Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) is successfully applied to reveal such signatures on Single-Edge-Notched steel samples. A methodology is also proposed to evaluate the Crack-Opening-Load from temperature data. The work finally explores the influence of crack-closure on crack-tip identification and on the evaluation of the Stress Intensity …
Binder and Mixture Fatigue Performance of Plant-Produced Road Surface Course Asphalt Mixtures with High Contents of Reclaimed Asphalt
2019
The aged properties of Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) binders are one of the main factors working against their utilisation in high-RA content (>
THE RESISTANCE TO FATIGUE OF DRY ASPHALT RUBBER CONCRETE FOR SUB-BALLAST LAYER
2015
The more and more frequent use of recycled materials within the road and railway infrastructures is now an irreversible trend. In this area the use of Dry Asphalt Rubber Concrete (DARC) in sub-ballast layer seems to be a suitable technique to reach high mechanical and environmental performance even if such material should be analyzed over a long time horizon. This paper presents the results of experimental research focused on the resistance to fatigue of Dry Asphalt Rubber Concrete in sub-ballast layers; the survey has been carried out using four-point bending test (4pbt) on mixture samples with different rubber contents. The results of fatigue in DARC have been compared with the performanc…
Food of the Gods for the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis Related Fatigue?
2019
In their JNNP paper, Coe et al report the preliminary results of a feasibility trial on flavonoid enriched cocoa for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) related fatigue, showing promising results that encourage the conduction of a phase III clinical trial to confirm the results of possible clinical effects on MS related fatigue.1 As described in the paper,1 fatigue is the most common symptom reported by individuals affected by MS, affecting the majority of patients. It is often present even when neurological disability is low and in the early stages of the disease, but impacts significantly the quality of life in MS patients, diminishing independence in everyday activities. Fatigue sym…
A dissipated energy comparison to evaluate fatigue resistance using 2PB
2012
Flexural fatigue due to repeated traffic loading is a process of cumulative damage and one of the main failure modes of flexible pavement structures. Typically, micro-cracks originate at the bottom of an asphalt concrete layer due to horizontal tensile strains. Micro-cracking starts to propagate towards the upper layers under repeated loading which can lead to pavement failure. Different approaches are usually used to characterise fatigue resistance in asphalt mixtures including the phenomenological approach, the fracture mechanics approach and the dissipated energy approach. This paper presents a comparison of fatigue resistance calculated for different dissipated energy models using 2 Poi…
Hip muscle function in patients with symptomatic femoroacetabular impingement
2014
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a pathomechanical process of the hip joint, which could lead to hip pain and functional disability. Aim of this thesis was to investigate hip muscle function in patients with a symptomatic FAI. Hip muscle function was first investigated before patients underwent any surgical treatment for managing FAI. It was shown that they present with reduced hip muscle strength (i.e., muscle weakness), probably due to hip muscle inhibition. Nevertheless, hip muscle weakness was not associated with exaggerated hip muscle fatigue. Hip muscle strength recovery was then evaluated in a series of patients after hip arthroscopy to treat FAI. These patients demonstrated a g…
