OSL dating of Middle Weichselian age shallow basin sediments in Western Latvia, Eastern Baltic

Abstract This paper presents the results of the first attempt to date the Quaternary sediments of western Latvia in the southeast Baltic region, using luminescence. The analyses have been carried out on sandy sediments of the Jurkalne Formation that are located between upper and lower Scandinavian sourced tills. Previous publications on the origin of the Quaternary sediments in the region are reviewed and it is found that there are a wide range of explanations for their processes of formation and their age of formation. We describe three new parastenocaridid: Cottarellicaris sanctiangeli Bruno & Cottarelli sp. nov., Stammericaris vincentimariae Bruno & Cottarelli sp. nov. and Proserpinicars specincola Bruno & Cottarelli sp. nov., collected in the pools of five different caves located in Calabria (Southern Italy). We conducted a phylogenetic analysis based on the mitochondrial COI and ribosomal 18S sequences of C. sanctiangeli sp. nov. and S. vincentimariae sp. nov., and of four more species of Stammericaris and one Proserpinicaris available from literature. Horse exploitation at the Late Upper Palaeolithic site of Oelknitz (Thuringia, Germany) with special reference to canine modifications

Abstract The faunal assemblage from Structure 5 of the Magdalenian settlement Oelknitz (Thuringia, Germany) was analyzed. The fauna is dominated by horse. All stages of butchery from skinning to marrow extraction were performed within the horse assemblage. In addition to this, various stages of organic artifact production could be documented. Two fragmentary equid canine teeth were of particular interest. They are the only documented canines from Structure 5, which otherwise contained a large amount of teeth. Análisis funcional y urbanístico de la casa 11 de la Bastida de les Alcusses (Moixent, Valéncia)

En el presente trabajo se muestran y analizan los resultados de las campañas de excavación en 1997 y 1998 en la Casa 11 de la Bastilla de les Alcusses (Moixent), situada en el sector este del poblado. Al hecho de poder estudiar la casa por primera vez en su conjunto, incluvendo el patio abierto entre la casa y el camino de ronda, se añade el análisis de las muestras carpológicas y de fauna que se recogieron del vertedero hallado en este patio. Estos datos obtenidos muestran por primera vez información proveniente del uso doméstico de una vivienda de la Bastida, algo que Eire imposible en los departamentos excavados entre 1928 y 1931.

Responses of decomposer community to root-isolation and addition of slash

Abstract We studied the causal relationships between forest harvesting and the soil decomposer community focusing on suppression of energy inputs from trees to the soil through root–mycorrhizal network and increased energy input to the soil in the form of slash left on site. We hypothesised that both of these factors would affect the decomposer community, since the soil food web has been regarded as a system in which the amount of resources controls the numbers of consumers.
