Evaluating the Authenticity of Virtual Environments: Comparison of Three Devices
2016
Immersive virtual environments (VEs) have the potential to provide novel cost effective ways for evaluating not only new environments and usability scenarios, but also potential user experiences. To achieve this, VEs must be adequately realistic. The level of perceived authenticity can be ascertained by measuring the levels of immersion people experience in their VE interactions. In this paper the degree of authenticity is measured via anauthenticity indexin relation to three different immersive virtual environment devices. These devices include (1) a headband, (2) 3D glasses, and (3) a head-mounted display (HMD). A quick scale for measuring immersion, feeling of control, and simulator sick…
What is your couple type? Gender ideology, housework-sharing, and babies
2015
AbstractBACKGROUNDIt is increasingly acknowledged that not only gender equality but also gender ideology plays a role in explaining fertility in advanced societies. In a micro perspective, the potential mismatch between gender equality (i.e., the actual sharing taking place in a couple) and gender ideology (i.e., attitudes and beliefs regarding gender roles) may drive childbearing decisions.OBJECTIVEThis paper assesses the impact of consistency between gender equality in attitudes and equality in the division of household labour on the likelihood of having another child, for different parities.METHODSRelying on two-wave panel data of the Bulgarian, Czech, French, Hungarian, and Lithuanian G…
Tehokkuuden subjektiivinen konstruointi julkishallinnon työntekijöiden puheessa – organisaatioestetiikka viitekehyksenä
2020
This study examines the employees’ everyday experiences at work. The goal is to encourage the emancipation from the limitations of rationality cultivating an aesthetic understanding of organizations. It seeks to answer how organization members construct their experiences of efficiency based on the dualism between aesthetic and rationality and how are these constructions related. This study also seeks to ansewer what kind of dynamics discourses on effectiviness deliver and maintain. The empirical data is obtained by interviews with public sector employees and interpreted using deconstructive analysis presented by David Boje. Based on the research interviews the strong reliance on rationality…
The Most Invisible Maternal Experience? Analysing How Maternal Regret Is Discussed in Finland
2021
AbstractIn Finland, becoming a mother is often constructed as an individual choice that ultimately leads to personal fulfilment and happiness, despite the occasional ‘negative’ feelings associated with motherhood such as exhaustion, frustration and tiredness. In this cultural atmosphere, maternal regret continues to be a subject that is hidden, forbidden and rarely scrutinised. It is perhaps surprising that in one of the world’s most gender egalitarian countries, which is also perceived to be one of the best countries in which to be a mother, women still testify that motherhood is limited to survival. We argue that, somewhat paradoxically, discussing the negative emotions of motherhood migh…
“F*** this shit” : Negotiating the Boundaries of Public Expression of Mother’s Negative Feelings
2021
In 2017, Finnish celebrity Sini Ariell published a blog post titled “F*** this shit” in which she revealed her difficult feelings as a mother of a newborn baby. Attracting attention from Finnish media, the post went viral. Through the empirical analysis of affective reactions to the post on an anonymous online discussion board, we explore how the limits of the public expression of negative maternal feelings are negotiated and maintained, but also challenged. Our results highlight the normative, even punitive dynamics of the digital intimate public, as commenters on the discussion board often argued that struggles and unhappiness during motherhood should not be made public but dealt with in …
The oceanic feeling in painterly creativity
2014
The oceanic feeling has been a relatively persistent topic of discussion in both creativity research and aesthetics. Characterized by a sensation of self-boundary dissolution, the feeling has often been reported to involve experiences of fusion with various objects, including works of art. In this article, I will discuss the oceanic feeling in the specific context of painterly creativity. I will begin by arguing that the oceanic feeling cannot be classified as an emotion, mood, or bodily feeling in the established senses of these terms. I will then introduce philosopher Matthew Ratcliffe’s theory of existential feelings to help formulate a more accurate view of the oceanic feeling. More spe…
Neoestetica: un archetipo disciplinare
2011
The paper focuses on Du Bos’ contribution to the birth of aesthetics. Du Bos elaborates – in an anticlassicistical tone – three central notions: 1) that of “artificial passion”, 2) of the taste of “the public” (which is in turn linked to a peculiar conception of “feeling”) and 3) of “artistic genius”. The main tenet will be that such an approach does lead to a “philosophy of fine arts” (or of “artistic beauty”), i.e. the discipline with which modern aesthetics ends up identifying at the end of the xviii century. Hence the theoretical, and not just historical, interest for this author, especially when having an eye to neoaesthetics, viz. aesthetics as begotten by the crisis of the modern aes…
Afectividad y promoción de la salud en la escuela: construcción de significados por el maestro
2016
Objective: To understand affectivity and health promotion at school through the construction of meanings by the teachers. Methods: The present exploratory and descriptive study was conducted based on a qualitative approach using affective maps and semi-structured interviews as tools for data collection. Affective maps transcend the duality between cognition, affect and spatial representations because, within this context, any environment can be seen as an emotional territory. The interviews aimed to investigate which health promoting actions each teacher has participated in, their perceptions regarding them, which affects emerge when carrying out the actions suggested by the school and how …
