Probabilistic characterization of nonlinear systems under Poisson white noise via complex fractional moments

2014

In this paper, the probabilistic characterization of a nonlinear system enforced by Poissonian white noise in terms of complex fractional moments (CFMs) is presented. The main advantage in using such quantities, instead of the integer moments, relies on the fact that, through the CFMs the probability density function (PDF) is restituted in the whole domain. In fact, the inverse Mellin transform returns the PDF by performing integration along the imaginary axis of the Mellin transform, while the real part remains fixed. This ensures that the PDF is restituted in the whole range with exception of the value in zero, in which singularities appear. It is shown that using Mellin transform theorem…

Poisson white noise parametric input and response by using complex fractional moments

2014

Abstract In this paper the solution of the generalization of the Kolmogorov–Feller equation to the case of parametric input is treated. The solution is obtained by using complex Mellin transform and complex fractional moments. Applying an invertible nonlinear transformation, it is possible to convert the original system into an artificial one driven by an external Poisson white noise process. Then, the problem of finding the evolution of the probability density function (PDF) for nonlinear systems driven by parametric non-normal white noise process may be addressed in determining the PDF evolution of a corresponding artificial system with external type of loading.

Career opportunities and benefits for young oncologists in the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO)

2016

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) is one of the leading societies of oncology professionals in the world. Approximately 30% of the 13 000 ESMO members are below the age of 40 and thus meet the society's definition of young oncologists (YOs). ESMO has identified the training and development of YOs as a priority and has therefore established a comprehensive career development programme. This includes a leadership development programme to help identify and develop the future leaders in oncology. Well-trained and highly motivated future generations of multidisciplinary oncologists are essential to ensure the optimal evolution of the field of oncology with the ultimate goal of pro…

Can ‘Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology Subspecialty Diploma in Glaucoma,’ a subspecialty examination on glaucoma induce the qualification…

2016

From 2015, the examination of Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology Subspecialty Diploma in Glaucoma (FEBOS-Glaucoma) was launched by the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) in cooperation with the European Glaucoma Society (EGS). This opinion aims at disclosing the background of the examination, prerequisite to the examination, and the value of the FEBOS-Glaucoma diploma.

Turning a new “page”: ways to decrease the number of pages after hours without compromising patient care

2020

Pages to house staff after hours, especially overnight, lead to interrupted sleep and fatigue the next day. Although some pages are urgent, others may not need an immediate response. In this study we aimed to identify unwarranted pages and to establish ways to reduce them.Over 2 months, all pages to the Department of Pediatric Urology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, during call hours were documented, including the assessment of the responding physicians of their medical necessity. After analyzing the reasons for inappropriate pages, we took several steps to try to reduce them without impairing patient care. One year later, pages were tracked again to evaluate the effic…

Reverse versus Normal Prenyl Transferases in Paraherquamide Biosynthesis Exhibit Distinct Facial Selectivities

1999

Both a face-selective and a non-face-selective mode of formation of quaternary centers of isoprene-derived structural moieties of the natural alkaloid paraherquamide A (1) have been discovered by feeding experiments on Penicillium fellutanum with [U-13 C6 ]-glucose and [13 C2 ]-acetate. The labeling patterns suggest that the methyl groups (C22, C23) are introduced in a non-face-selective manner by a reverse prenyl transferase. The C5 unit comprising the dioxepin moiety retains stereochemical integrity indicative of a single, face-selective addition of the phenolic group to the dimethylallyl group.

Gender Confirmation Surgery: Guiding Principles

2016

Abstract Background At this time, no formal training or educational programs exist for surgeons or surgery residents interested in performing gender confirmation surgeries. Aim To propose guiding principles designed to aid with the development of formal surgical training programs focused on gender confirmation surgery. Methods We use expert opinion to provide a “first of its kind” framework for training surgeons to care for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. Outcomes We describe a multidisciplinary treatment model that describes an educational philosophy and the institution of quality parameters. Results This article represents the first step in the development of a structure…

Thoracic research scholarship 1988: pulmonary thromboendarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension at the University of California…

1990

At the University of California, San Diego pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) has emerged as an effective measure in the treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Unresolved emboli become organized by incorporation into the vascular wall and may form strictures, webs, bands and/or membranous occlusions and cause pulmonary hypertension refractory to medical treatment. When pulmonary vascular resistance exceeds 300 dyn.sec.cm-5 and the vascular wall changes are located to begin at or proximal to the lobar artery level, surgery is indicated. The operation is performed using cardiopulmonary bypass, deep hypothermia and periods of circulatory arrest. The dissection of each s…

German Thoracic Research Scholarship 1996: lung volume reduction for endstage pulmonary emphysema at the Washington University of St. Louis.

1998

The Thoracic Research Scholarship 1996 of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery enabled me to visit Barnes Hospital at the Washington University of St. Louis, USA, from May to July 1996. At that center Prof. J. D. Cooper has established lung-volume reduction surgery as a successful surgical treatment for patients with endstage pulmonary emphysema. The operation is performed using left-sided double-lumen intubation. After opening of the chest and pleura and starting single-lung ventilation the less diseased parts of the second lung collapse due to absorption atelectasis whereas the more diseased portion of the lung stays hyperinflated. Linear staplers buttressed with bov…

Euro Crisis and plurality: Does the political orientation of newspapers determine the selection and spin of information?

2016

This article studies the impact of right and left moderate political orientation of newspapers on the levels of plurality in the news coverage of the Euro Crisis in 20 newspapers from 10 European countries through a methodology based on Simpson’s D index. The expectation of finding distinct patterns of coverage leading to high levels of plurality was not fully supported and the results have shown that national frames influence levels of overall plurality more than political ideology.
