Bone mineral density of the proximal femur after hip resurfacing arthroplasty: 1-year follow-up study

Abstract Background Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is considered a bone-preserving procedure and may eliminate proximal femoral stress shielding and osteolysis. However, in addition to implant-related stress-shielding factors, various patient-related factors may also have an effect on bone mineral density (BMD) of the proximal femur in patients with HRA. Kuntscher nailing of femoral shaft fractures in children and adolescents.

We have reviewed 29 cases of very unstable diaphyseal fractures of the femur in children and adolescents treated by Kuntscher nailing. Follow up was for at least 5 years, and in most cases until after the end of growth. There were no post-operative complications, and the mean overgrowth of the femur was 7.06 mm. There was growth disturbance of the proximal femur in one case, but this did not interfere with function. We believe that Kuntscher nailing is indicated in children and adolescents with unstable high velocity fractures of the femoral shaft.

Pathogenesis and prophylaxis of circulatory reactions during total hip replacement

Circulatory reactions such as a drop in blood pressure, bradycardia, cardiac arrest, and even intraoperative death after insertion of the stem are well known events during total hip replacement. The present paper reports bone marrow intravasation after rise of intramedullary pressure in the femoral cavity during insertion of hip prostheses, demonstrated by intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography. In an animal study, the ultrasound echoes were identified as "mixed emboli" consisting of a core of bone marrow surrounded by thrombus. Improved Bone Biomechanical Properties in Rats after Oral Xylitol Administration

The effects of 5, 10, and 20% dietary xylitol supplementations on the biomechanical properties, histological architecture, and the contents of collagen, pyridinoline, and deoxypyridinoline in long bones of rats were studied. Tibiae were used for the three-point bending test, and femurs were used for the torsion and loading test of the femoral neck. The 10 and 20% oral xylitol administrations caused a significant increase of tibial stress, femoral shear stress, and stress of the femoral neck as compared with the controls. Food deprivation decreases the exertion-induced acid hydrolase response in mouse skeletal muscle

Strenuous prolonged running causes muscle fibre necrosis in skeletal muscles. The muscle injury is associated with inflammation and a strong increase in the total activities of certain acid hydrolases a few days after exertion. Blood circulation of long bones in trained growing rats and mice

The effect of physical training on the blood circulation of long bones was studied in growing rats and mice of NMRI-strain. The animals to be trained and their controls were about 2 weeks old at the beginning of the training. The training took place on a 5 degree inclined treadmill 5 days a week for 3 weeks in experiment I and 7 weeks in experiments II and III. The duration of the daily exercise was progressively increased over 3 weeks. The final exercise bouts were 80 min for moderate and 180 min for intensive training programs. A collagen extraction and deuterium oxide stable isotope tracer method for the quantification of bone collagen synthesis rates in vivo.
