Mediaatioita : fenomenologisen marxismin mahdollisuus
2013
Tutkimukseni tehtävänä on selvittää, onko fenomenologian ja marxismin synteesi mahdollista. Käsittelen 1930-luvun taitteen Herbert Marcusen fenomenologista marxismia esimerkkinä synteesin mahdollisuudesta. Näiden perinteiden yhdistäminen vaatii kuitenkin ensin syventymistä Marcusen ajattelun pohjana toimiviin hegeliläisen ja weberiläisen marxismin perinteisiin sekä Martin Heideggerin muotoilemaan fenomenologiaan. Marxismissa on perinteisesti painottunut yhteiskunnallisten rakenteiden ja fenomenologiassa yksilöllisen elävän kokemuksen näkökulma. Tällaisten eriävien lähtökohtien takia ne on usein asetettu jopa vastakohtaisiksi perinteiksi. Oleelliseksi kysymykseksi nouseekin sekä marxismin et…
Liikemerkki viestinä : fenomenologinen ja semioottinen tapaustutkimus Helsingin yliopiston liikemerkistä
2011
Tu…
The role of Bishop Conrad of Querfurt in the actions of Emperor Henry VI Hohenstaufen in Southern Italy. In the shadow of a great European policy (Ge…
2019
Conrad of Querfurt (ca. 1160–1202) was one of the most important and influential German bishops at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. He was associated with the Hohenstaufen dynasty. As a result, he became the bishop of Hildesheim (1194–1199), and then the bishop of Würzburg (1198–1202), as well as served two German kings from that family as chancellor (1194–1201). Conrad of Querfurt was a man of extremely broad political horizons and great ambitions. It was not a coincidence that the title of chancellor, along with the governorship of the Norman kingdom, was given to him by Henry VI. He took great care of his public image, which he proved by sponsoring the work of Peter of Eboli, tit…

Physiotherapists' lived experiences of decision making in therapeutic encounters with persons suffering from whiplash-associated disorder: A hermeneu…
2020
Conceptual discussions related to clinical reasoning and decision making have evolved over the years from biomedical to incorporating more holistic approach to reasoning. Empirical studies exploring clinical reasoning and decision making in physiotherapy practice have mostly focused on aspects of managing persons with low back pain, such as exercise prescription, education and communicating diagnosis. There is a paucity of studies exploring decision making in whiplash‐associated disorder (WAD); thus, the aim of this study was to explore the physiotherapists' lived experiences of decision making related to treating persons with WAD. A qualitative research design based on hermeneutic phenomen…
Shear design of high strength concrete beams in MRFs
2019
This paper presents the criteria for the shear design of high strength concrete (HSC) beams in moment resisting frames (MRFs). The formulation of an analytical model is provided for the case of beams with longitudinal reinforcement in the presence of transverse stirrups. The model is of additive type, in the meaning that the shear resistance of the beam is evaluated as the sum of several contributions. In particular, the contribution of concrete, longitudinal rebars, and transversal reinforcement are taken into account. Furthermore, for assessing the concrete contribution, a classical approach is followed, according to which two effects arise in the shear mechanism: the arc and the beam eff…
Optimistic, defensive-pessimistic, impulsive and self-handicapping strategies in university environments
1998
Abstract A person-oriented approach was used to investigate what types of achievement strategy people apply in university environments, and how these are associated with their academic achievement, related satisfaction and personal well-being. Two hundred and fifty-four undergraduates filled in first the Cartoon-Attribution-Strategy Test, the Strategy and Attribution Questionnaire, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale and the revised Beck's Depression Inventory at the beginning of their studies, and one year later an academic satisfaction scale. Two years later, they again filled in the same measures. Their academic achievement was coded yearly from university archives. Four types of achievement s…
Career practitioners' conceptions of social media in career services
2013
This article reports the outcomes of a study, undertaken from a phenomenographic perspective, of career practitioners' conceptions of social media usage in career services. Fifteen Finnish career practitioners – representing comprehensive, secondary and higher education as well as public employment services – were interviewed in focus groups. The analysis of the interview data revealed five distinct descriptive categories reflecting the career practitioners' conceptions of social media's use in career services. Social media in career services was conceived as (1) unnecessary, (2) dispensable, (3) a possibility, (4) desirable and (5) indispensable. The results indicated associations between …
Higher education teachers' descriptions of their own learning : large scale study of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences
2016
In this large-scale study, higher education teachers’ descriptions of their own learning were examined with qualitative analysis involving application of principles of phenomenographic research. This study is unique: it is unusual to use large-scale data in qualitative studies. The data were collected through an e-mail survey sent to 5960 teachers at universities of applied sciences in Finland. The number of respondents was 1622. Four hierarchically structured categories of learning were found: individual learning, collegial learning, team learning and innovative partnership learning. The role of teachers in higher education demands innovative partnership learning: being active at the socie…
