Systemic therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma: The present and the future

2021

Hepatocellular carcinoma is diagnosed in more than half of all cases at unresectable stage when no potentially curative treatments are feasible. Since 2008, sorafenib had represented the only effective first line systemic therapy over the last decade until the approval of lenvatinib, who showed to be non-inferior to sorafenib. Recently, for the first time, a combination of immunotherapy and antiangiogenic drug, atezolizumab plus bevacizumab, was associated with a significantly longer overall survival and progression free survival compared to sorafenib, becoming the new best performing first-line approach for unresectable HCC. After several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that have attem…

Los castillos valencianos en el siglo XIII. Del "hisn" musulmán al "castrum" cristiano

2004

Electrochemical treatment of aqueous solutions of catechol by various electrochemical advanced oxidation processes: Effect of the process and of oper…

2017

Abstract Catechol, one of the most abundant compounds in olive mills wastewaters, which is generated in the Fenton degradation of various aromatic compounds, is a toxic, possible carcinogen, persistent pollutant and it is not readily biodegradable. Hence, its degradation requires the utilization of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Here, the electrochemical treatment of aqueous solutions of catechol was investigated. The utilization of various electrochemical processes, such as electro-Fenton (EF), direct anodic oxidation (AO), indirect oxidation by electro-generated active chlorine and coupled processes was investigated. Furthermore, the effect of various operating conditions (including…

Interactions between Polyamines and Abiotic Stress Pathway Responses Unraveled by Transcriptome Analysis of Polyamine Overproducers

2011

Plant development and productivity are negatively regulated by adverse environmental conditions. The identification of stress-regulatory genes, networks, and signaling molecules should allow the development of novel strategies to obtain tolerant plants. Polyamines (PAs) are polycationic compounds with a recognized role in plant growth and development, as well as in abiotic and biotic stress responses. During the last years, knowledge on PA functions has been achieved using genetically modified plants with altered PA levels. In this review, we combine the information obtained from global transcriptome analyses in transgenic Arabidopsis plants with altered putrescine or spermine levels. Compa…

MOLECULAR BASIS OF DRUG PHOTOTOXICITY: PHOTOSENSITIZED CELL DAMAGE BY THE MAJOR PHOTOPRODUCT OF TIAPROFENIC ACID

1994

Tiaprofenic acid is a photosensitizing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, whose major photoproduct (decarboxytiaprofenic acid) is also a potent photosensitizer. Because of the lack of the carboxylate moiety, this photoproduct is more lipophilic and might bind more efficiently to cell membranes, thereby causing phototoxic damage. To verify the feasibility of this hypothesis, we have prepared the 3H-labeled analogs of tiaprofenic acid and its photoproduct and examined the binding, persistence and phototoxicity of the photoproduct using poorly metabolizing (fibroblasts) and actively metabolizing cells (hepatocytes). The photoproduct of tiaprofenic acid accumulates in both cell types as it is…

Comparison between tumors in plants and human beings: Mechanisms of tumor development and therapy with secondary plant metabolites

2019

Abstract Background Human tumors are still a major threat to human health and plant tumors negatively affect agricultural yields. Both areas of research are developing largely independent of each other. Treatment of both plant and human tumors remains unsatisfactory and novel therapy options are urgently needed. Hypothesis The concept of this paper is to compare cellular and molecular mechanisms of tumor development in plants and human beings and to explore possibilities to develop novel treatment strategies based on bioactive secondary plant metabolites. The interdisciplinary discourse may unravel commonalities and differences in the biology of plant and human tumors as basis for rational …

The transformation of the Russian defence industry

1995

TRADITIONALLY, THE DEFENCE INDUSTRY constituted the most powerful industrial lobby in the USSR, with an administrative structure at all the organisational levels where its interests could be affected. With a hierarchical and pyramidal structure, the different entities of the sector remained isolated from strictly civilian bodies. The strategic part it played within the organisation of the Soviet Union enabled the defence industry to manage a growing and important volume of resources; on the one hand, it had a special supply system which guaranteed regular high-quality provision of the most advanced technology in the country, as well as highly qualified human resources. On the other hand, th…

Targeted Therapies for Colorectal Cancer

2015

In the last decades, the standard chemotherapeutic approach for the metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) treatment was represented by a 5-FU-based regimen with the addition of either oxaliplatin or irinotecan. Recent discoveries in the molecular biology field led to the spread of so-called targeted agents whose mechanism of action is based on the binding with specific target molecules (cellular receptors or soluble proteins) responsible for the activation of many transduction pathways required for malignant cell growth and survival. Among these, the most important consist of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and the tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). As a consequence, the different mechanism of a…

Japānas krūmcidonijas Chaenomeles japonica šūnu suspensijas kultūras raksturošana pielietošanai biotehnoloģijā

2021

Darba mērķis bija raksturot Japānas krūmcidonijas Chaenomeles japonica suspensiju kultūru un izvērtēt tās pielietojumu biotehnoloģijā. Darbā no C. japonica kallusu kultūrām iegūtas suspensiju kultūras, veikta šūnu vizualizācija ar fluorescences mikroskopijas metodēm. Konstruēta augšanas līkne, no kuras ievākti paraugi antiradikālās aktivitātes, kopējo fenolu un antocianīnu satura noteikšanai. Lielāko fenolu savienojumu koncentrāciju un augstāko antiradikālo un antimikrobiālo aktivitāti uzrādīja stacionārās fāzes paraugi. Lielāko antocianīnu saturu uzrādīja astotās dienas paraugs. Šūnas suspensijās agregātos bija lielākoties dediferencējušās.
