Multichannel functional testing in normal subjects, glaucoma suspects, and glaucoma patients
2012
Purpose.: To evaluate visual function with a novel multichannel functional test named the ATD Multichannel Functional Test. Methods.: This multicenter study had a prospective and cross-sectional design. A total of 186 eyes were included: 42 with glaucoma, 14 glaucoma suspects due to optic nerve characteristics, 25 ocular hypertensives, and 105 normal eyes. All patients performed standard visual fields (Humphrey 24-2) and ATD with eight stimuli configurations: four achromatic (A), two red-green (T), and two blue-yellow (D). To derive main outcome measures, mean sensitivity, mean defect (MD), and pattern standard deviation (PSD) were calculated and compared among groups and types of stimuli w…
Wilson's disease in Spain: validation of sources of information used by the Rare Diseases Registries
2021
Psychometric evaluation of the Persian version of the diabetic foot self-care questionnaire in Iranian patients with diabetes
2021
AbstractBackgroundDiabetic foot self-care refers to a group of self-management behaviors that can reduce the incidence of foot ulcers and amputations. It is necessary to have a valid and reliable standard tool to measure foot self-care in diabetic patients. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Diabetic Foot Self-Care Questionnaire of the University of Malaga, Spain (DFSQ-UMA) in Iran.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted with 407 diabetic patients who were selected using a convenient sampling method. Construct validity was assessed by exploratory (with 207 patients) and confirmatory (with 200 patients) factor analyses. Internal con…

Vitamin D, precocious acute myocardial infarction, and exceptional longevity
2015
Recent studies have reported low circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), the biologically active form of vitamin D, in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) [1], hypertension [2], carotid atherosclerosis [3], atrial fibrillation [4], and heart failure [5]. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with all-cause mortality [6,7] and predicts adverse cardiac events in patients with established CVD [8] or after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) [9]. In turn, vitamin D supplementation improves the modulation of autonomic tone [10]. 4.638 JCR (2015) Q1, 24/124 Cardiac and cardiovascular systems UEM
Benefits of skeletal-muscle exercise training in pulmonary arterial hypertension: The WHOLEi + 12 trial
2017
Pulmonary arterial hypertension is often associated with skeletal-muscle weakness. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to determine the effects of an 8-week intervention combining muscle resistance, aerobic and inspiratory pressure-load exercises on upper/lower-body muscle power and other functional variables in patients with this disease. Participants were allocated to a control (standard care) or intervention (exercise) group (n = 20 each, 45 ± 12 and 46 ± 11 years, 60% women and 10% patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension per group). The intervention included five, three and six supervised (inhospital) sessions/week of aerobic, resistance and inspirato…
Validation of the Spanish Version of the Beginning Breastfeeding Survey-Cumulative: A Follow-up Study
2019
Background: The Beginning Breastfeeding Survey-Cumulative (BBSC) is an instrument that assesses the overall maternal perception of breastfeeding effectiveness during the early postpartum period. Research aims: The aims of this study were to adapt and validate a Spanish version of the BBSC and provide new evidence regarding its validity. Methods: A standard forward and back-translation process was used to obtain the Spanish version of the questionnaire (BBSC-E). A sample of 793 breastfeeding mothers was used. Data were obtained from clinical records and questionnaires self-administered at discharge and at 1–4 months postpartum. The factorial structure of the BBSC-E was examined with both an …
Determinants of seasonal influenza vaccination in pregnant women in Valencia, Spain
2016
Background: In most countries the coverage of seasonal influenza vaccination in pregnant women is low. We investigated the acceptance, reasons for rejection and professional involvement related to vaccine information in pregnant women in Valencia, Spain. Methods: Observational retrospective study in 200 pregnant women, 100 vaccinated and 100 unvaccinated, were interviewed during the 2014/2015 vaccination campaign. Electronic medical records, immunization registry and telephone interviews were used to determine reasons for vaccination and immunization rejection. In vitro antifungal activity of lactic acid bacteria against mycotoxigenic fungi and their application in loaf bread shelf life improvement
2016
Food spoilage caused by mycotoxigenic fungi represents an important food safety problem. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are used as starter cultures in a larger number of food products. In this study, 16 strains of LAB were cultivated in MRS broth under anaerobiosis. Then, cell free supernatants were obtained by centrifugation and their antifungal activity against Aspergillus parasiticus and Penicillium expansum was tested using the disc-diffusion method. Furthermore, the LABs that showed in vitro antifungal activity were used in bread fermentation with yeast in order to study fungal growth inhibition and aflatoxin (AF) reduction in processed bread previously inoculated with A. parasiticus. The…
