Bridging the nuclear structure gap between stable and super heavy nuclei

2009

International audience; Due to recent advances in detection techniques, excited states in several trans-fermium nuclei were studied in many laboratories worldwide, shedding light on the evolution of nuclear structure between stable nuclei and the predicted island of stability centered around spherical magic numbers. In particular, studies of K-isomers around the Z=100 and N=152 deformed shell closures extended information on the energies of Nilsson orbitals at the Fermi surface. Some of these orbitals originate from spherical states, which are relevant to the magic gaps in super-heavy nuclei. The single-particle energies can be used to test various theoretical predictions and aid in extrapo…

Production of excited double hypernuclei via Fermi breakup of excited strange systems

2011

Precise spectroscopy of multi-strange hypernuclei provides a unique chance to explore the hyperon-hyperon interaction. In the present work we explore the production of excited states in double hypernuclei following the micro-canonical break-up of an initially excited double hypernucleus which is created by the absorption and conversion of a stopped $\Xi^{-}$ hyperon. Rather independent on the spectrum of possible excited states in the produced double hypernuclei the formation of excited states dominates in our model. For different initial target nuclei which absorb the $\Xi^-$, different double hypernuclei nuclei dominate. Thus the ability to assign the various observable $\gamma$-transitio…

Search for γγ decays of a Higgs boson in e+e- collisions at √s up to 209 GeV

2002

A search for events with a photon pair arising from the decay of a Higgs boson produced in association with a fermion pair, is performed in 893 pb-1 of data recorded by the ALEPH detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. No excess of such events is found over the expected background, An upper limit is derived on the product of the e+e- → HZ cross section and the H → γγ branching fraction as a function of the Higgs boson mass. A fermiophobic Higgs boson produced with the Standard Model cross section is excluded at 95% confidence level for all masses below 105.4 GeV/c2. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Four-fermion production in $e^+e^-$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV

1996

Four-fermion events have been selected in a data sample of 5.8 pb(-1) collected with the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV. The final states l(+)l(-), l(+)l(-)l(+)l(-), , and <l(+)l(-) have been examined Five events are observed in the data, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions of 6.67 +/- 0.38 events from four-fermion processes and 0.14(-0.05)(+0.19) from background processes. Spin and magnetic moment of23Mg

2017

A negative magnetic moment of 23Mg has been determined by collinear laser spectroscopy at CERN-ISOLDE. The absolute value is in agreement with previous measurements by nuclear magnetic resonance while the sign points at high-seniority configurations. The result is consistent with shell-model predictions for nuclei with valence nucleons in the sd shell. ispartof: Journal of Physics G, Nuclear and Particle Physics vol:44 issue:7 status: published

Neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations in the presence of mirror magnetic fields

2009

We performed ultracold neutron (UCN) storage measurements to search for additional losses due to neutron (n) to mirror-neutron (n') oscillations as a function of an applied magnetic field B. In the presence of a mirror magnetic field B', UCN losses would be maximal for B = B'. We did not observe any indication for nn' oscillations and placed a lower limit on the oscillation time of tau_{nn'} > 12.0 s at 95% C.L. for any B' between 0 and 12.5 uT.

Measurement ofZγproduction inpp¯collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2010

The production rate and kinematics of photons produced in association with Z bosons are studied using 2 fb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collision data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross section for p{bar p} {yields} {ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}{gamma} + X (where the leptons {ell} are either muons or electrons with dilepton mass M{sub {ell}{ell}} > 40 GeV/c{sup 2}, and where the photon has transverse energy E{sub T}{sup {gamma}} > 7 GeV and is well separated from the leptons) is 4.6 {+-} 0.2 (stat) {+-} 0.3 (syst) {+-} 0.3 (lum) pb, which is consistent with standard model expectations. We use the photon ET distribution from Z{gamma} events where the Z has decayed to {mu}{sup +}{mu}…

Charge radius of the neutrino

2000

Using the pinch technique we construct at one-loop order a neutrino charge radius, which is finite, depends neither on the gauge-fixing parameter nor on the gauge-fixing scheme employed, and is process independent. This definition stems solely from an effective proper photon-neutrino one-loop vertex, with no reference to box or self-energy contributions. The role of the $\mathrm{WW}$ box in this construction is critically examined. In particular it is shown that the exclusion of the effective $\mathrm{WW}$ box from the definition of the neutrino charge radius is not a matter of convention but is in fact dynamically realized when the target fermions are right-handedly polarized. In this way …

Locality properties of Neuberger's lattice Dirac operator

1998

The gauge covariant lattice Dirac operator D which has recently been proposed by Neuberger satisfies the Ginsparg-Wilson relation and thus preserves chiral symmetry. The operator also avoids a doubling of fermion species, but its locality properties are not obvious. We now prove that D is local (with exponentially decaying tails) if the gauge field is sufficiently smooth at the scale of the cutoff. Further analytic and numerical studies moreover suggest that the locality of the operator is in fact guaranteed under far more general conditions.

Quasi-particle and plasmaron properties in the electron gas

1972

The self-energy function of the degenerate electron gas is studied in an approximation which uses the dielectric function proposed by Singwi, Tosi, Land and Sjolander, and neglects the corresponding vertex corrections. Two contributions to the self-energy are distinguished which arise from the plasmon pole and the particle-hole continuum respectively. Comparison of the results is made with the analogous approximation to the self-energy which uses the RPA dielectric function, and with a further, simplified approximation. Subsequently the properties of the usual quasi-particle and of the plasmaron are calculated. Nummerically, the most significant effect found is a 25% reduction of the plasma…
