The fundamental building blocks of matter, i.e. quarks and leptons, carry spin 1/2. There are two formally different but in essence equivalent methods of describing particles with spin: The representation theory of the Poincare group, in the framework of Wigner’s classification hypothesis of particles (see e.g. [QP07], Chap. 6), and the Van der Waerden spinor calculus based on SL(2, \(\mathbb{C}\)).

Effect of the Schrödinger functional boundary conditions on the convergence of step scaling

Recently several lattice collaborations have studied the scale dependence of the coupling in theories with different gauge groups and fermion representations using the Schrodinger functional method. This has motivated us to look at the convergence of the perturbative step scaling to its continuum limit with gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3) with Wilson fermions in the fundamental, adjoint or sextet representations. We have found that while the improved Wilson action does remove the linear terms from the step scaling, the convergence is extremely slow with the standard choices of the boundary conditions for the background field. Light-induced anomalous Hall effect in massless Dirac fermion systems and topological insulators with dissipation

Employing the quantum Liouville equation with phenomenological dissipation, we investigate the transport properties of massless and massive Dirac fermion systems that mimics graphene and topological insulators, respectively. The massless Dirac fermion system does not show an intrinsic Hall effect, but it shows a Hall current under the presence of circularly-polarized laser fields as a nature of a optically-driven nonequilibrium state. Based on the microscopic analysis, we find that the light-induced Hall effect mainly originates from the imbalance of photocarrier distribution in momentum space although the emergent Floquet–Berry curvature also has a non-zero contribution. Extended pseudo-fermions from non commutative bosons

We consider some modifications of the two dimensional canonical commutation relations, leading to {\em non commutative bosons} and we show how biorthogonal bases of the Hilbert space of the system can be obtained out of them. Our construction extends those recently introduced by one of us (FB), modifying the canonical anticommutation relations. We also briefly discuss how bicoherent states, producing a resolution of the identity, can be defined.

Dynamics of closed ecosystems described by operators

Abstract We adopt the so-called occupation number representation , originally used in quantum mechanics and recently adopted in the description of several classical systems, in the analysis of the dynamics of some models of closed ecosystems. In particular, we discuss two linear models, for which the solution can be found analytically, and a nonlinear system, for which we produce numerical results. We also discuss how a dissipative effect could be effectively implemented in the model.

Perturbative chiral violations for domain-wall QCD with improved gauge actions

We investigate, in the framework of perturbation theory at finite $N_s$, the effectiveness of improved gauge actions in suppressing the chiral violations of domain-wall fermions. Our calculations show substantial reductions of the residual mass when it is compared at the same value of the gauge coupling, the largest suppression being obtained when the DBW2 action is used. Similar effects can also be observed for a power-divergent mixing coefficient which is chirally suppressed. No significant reduction instead can be seen in the case of the difference between the vector and axial-vector renormalization constants when improved gauge actions are used in place of the plaquette action. Exploratory studies for the position-space approach to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the muon g - 2

The well-known discrepancy in the muon $g-2$ between experiment and theory demands further theory investigations in view of the upcoming new experiments. One of the leading uncertainties lies in the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution (HLbL), that we address with our position-space approach. We focus on exploratory studies of the pion-pole contribution in a simple model and the fermion loop without gluon exchanges in the continuum and in infinite volume. These studies provide us with useful information for our planned computation of HLbL in the muon $g-2$ using full QCD.
