NHC-Based Iron Sensitizers for DSSCs
2018
International audience; Nanostructured dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are promising photovoltaic devices because of their low cost and transparency. Ruthenium polypyridine complexes have long been considered as lead sensitizers for DSSCs, allowing them to reach up to 11% conversion efficiency. However, ruthenium suffers from serious drawbacks potentially limiting its widespread applicability, mainly related to its potential toxicity and scarcity. This has motivated continuous research efforts to develop valuable alternatives from cheap earth-abundant metals, and among them, iron is particularly attractive. Making iron complexes applicable in DSSCs is highly challenging due to an ultrafa…

Synthesis and characterization of highly ordered cobalt-magnetite nanocable arrays.
2006
Magnetically tunable, high-density arrays of coaxial nanocables within anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes have been synthesized. The nanocables consist of magnetite nanowires surrounded by cobalt nanotube sheaths and cobalt nanowires surrounded by magnetite nanotube sheaths. These materials are a combination of separate hard (Co) and soft (Fe3O4) magnetic materials in a single nanocable structure. The combination of two or more magnetic materials in such a radial structure is seen as a very powerful tool for the future fabrication of magnetoresistive, spin-valve and ultrafast spin-injection devices with nonplanar geometries. The nanocable arrays were prepared using a supercritical-fluid …
Routes to cell death in animal and plant kingdoms: from classic apoptosis to alternative ways to die—a review
2018
Programmed cell death is fundamental for multicellular organisms either in animal or plant kingdom. Classic apoptosis, which represents the best studied form of cell death, is dependent on caspase protease activity in animals. These proteases are not present in plants, where caspase-like activities, including metacaspases, are involved in the execution of plant cell death. Beyond apoptosis, various non-apoptotic forms of cell death also exist, including autophagy, necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis. These types of cell death can be activated independently of apoptosis and sometimes occur when apoptosis is inhibited. Non-apoptotic forms of cell death are best characterized in animals, …
Iron replacement therapy in the management of anaemia in non-dialysis Chronic kidney disease patients: Perspective of the Spanish Nephrology Society …
2021
This work presents an update on the management of iron deficiency in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), either with or without anaemia. A review is made of the recommendations of the guidelines for the treatment of iron deficiency in CKD. It also presents new studies on iron deficiency in patients with CKD, as well as new findings about iron therapy and its impact on clinical outcomes.Anaemia is a common complication of CRF, and is associated with a decrease in the quality of life of the patients, as well as an increase in morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency (absolute or functional) is common in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients, and may cause anaemia or a low respo…
Comparison of HapMap and 1000 genomes reference panels in a large-scale genome-wide association study
2017
An increasing number of genome-wide association (GWA) studies are now using the higher resolution 1000 Genomes Project reference panel (1000G) for imputation, with the expectation that 1000G imputation will lead to the discovery of additional associated loci when compared to HapMap imputation. In order to assess the improvement of 1000G over HapMap imputation in identifying associated loci, we compared the results of GWA studies of circulating fibrinogen based on the two reference panels. Using both HapMap and 1000G imputation we performed a meta-analysis of 22 studies comprising the same 91,953 individuals. We identified six additional signals using 1000G imputation, while 29 loci were ass…
Neutron powder diffraction study in the mixed molecular system (NaCN)1−x(KCN)x
1989
A detailed structural analysis of (NaCN${)}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{x}}$(KCN${)}_{\mathrm{x}}$ mixed crystals with x=0.02, 0.19, and 0.95 was performed by neutron powder diffraction. The structural parameters of the cubic phases were refined, applying a model of preferred orientations. Different noncubic low-temperature phases were observed for x=0.02 and 0.95. For x=0.02 the antiferroelectric ordering of ${\mathrm{CN}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ dipoles at low temperatures is accompanied by significant alkali-alkali and alkali-${\mathrm{CN}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ sublattice shifts. Structural data are presented together with previous results for mixed crystals with x=0.59 and…
Magnetoelectric coupling driven by inverse magnetostriction in multiferroic BiMn3Mn4O12
2013
By means of neutron powder diffraction, we investigated the effect of the polar Bi$^{3+}$ ion on the magnetic ordering of the Mn$^{3+}$ ions in BiMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, the counterpart with \textit{quadruple} perovskite structure of the \textit{simple} perovskite BiMnO$_3$. The data are consistent with a \textit{noncentrosymmetric} spacegroup $Im$ which contrasts the \textit{centrosymmetric} one $I2/m$ previously reported for the isovalent and isomorphic compound LaMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, which gives evidence of a Bi$^{3+}$-induced polarization of the lattice. At low temperature, the two Mn$^{3+}$ sublattices of the $A'$ and $B$ sites order antiferromagnetically (AFM) in an independent manner …
