C3-symmetric trinuclear copper(ii) species as tectons in crystal engineering

2013

Three new complexes have been obtained using C3-symmetric trinuclear complexes as tectons; [Cu3(felden)(NCS)3(dmf)3] (1), [Cu3(felden)(mand)3]·(C2H5)2O (2), and [Cu3(felden)(dca)3(C2H5OH)]·2H2O (3) (H3felden is the Schiff base resulting from the condensation of 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol with N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, mand− is the anion of the R-mandelic acid and dca− is the dicyanamide anion). Compounds 1 and 2 are discrete trinuclear species, while compound 3 is a 2D coordination polymer, constructed from trinuclear nodes and dicyanamido spacers. The variable-temperature magnetic properties of 1–3 have been investigated and they reveal the occurrence of weak antiferromagnetic intera…

A ferromagnetic methoxido-bridged Mn(III) dimer and a spin-canted metamagnetic μ(1,3)-azido-bridged chain.

2012

Two new Mn(III) complexes of formulas [MnL(1)(N(3))(OMe)](2) (1) and [MnL(2)(N(3))(2)](n) (2) have been synthesized by using two tridentate NNO-donor Schiff base ligands HL(1){(2-[(3-methylaminoethylimino)-methyl]-phenol)} and HL(2) {(2-[1-(2-dimethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol)}, respectively. Substitution of the H atom on the secondary amine group of the N-methyldiamine fragment of the Schiff base by a methyl group leads to a drastic structural change from a methoxido-bridged dimer (1) to a single μ(1,3)-azido-bridged 1D helical polymer (2). Both complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray structural analyses and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The ma…

Asymmetric bis-(μ1,1-azido) bridged dinuclear copper(II) complex with N2O donor Schiff base: synthesis, structure and magnetic study

2015

A copper(II) complex, [Cu2(L)2(N3)2] [where HL = 2-((3-(methylamino)propylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol] has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV–vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The complex crystallizes in the trigonal space group R. The deprotonated tridentate Schiff base occupies three coordination sites of copper(II). The fourth coordination site is occupied by an azide. A symmetry-related azide from a different molecule coordinates with the fifth site of copper(II), thereby forming a double end-on azide-bridged centrosymmetric dimer. Variable temperature solid–state magnetic studies between 2 and 300 K were car…

Influence of the central metal ion in controlling the self-assembly and magnetic properties of 2D coordination polymers derived from [(NiL)2M]2+ node…

2014

Three new 2D coordination polymers (CPs) 2∞[(NiL)2Ni(μ1,5-N(CN)2)2]n (1), 2∞[(NiL)2Cd(μ1,5-N(CN)2)2]n (2) and 2∞[(NiL)2Zn(μ1,5-N(CN)2)2]n (3) have been synthesized by reacting a [NiL] “metalloligand” (where H2L = N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine) with three different metal(II) (Ni, Cd and Zn) perchlorates and sodium dicyanamide, with identical molar ratios of the reactants. All three products have been characterized by IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, elemental analyses, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction and variable temperature magnetic measurements. The isomorphous compounds 1 and 2 consist of similar [(NiL)2M(μ1,5-N(CN)2)] (M = Ni for 1 and Cd for 2) angular trinuclear un…

An original 1D Cu–Co heterometallic compound: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties

2006

A novel heterobimetallic system, 1∞[LCuIICoII(NCS)2] (1), was obtained by reacting the neutral mononuclear complex [LCu] with cobalt(II) acetate in the presence of potassium thiocyanate (L is the dianion of the Schiff base resulting from the 2 ∶ 1 condensation of 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde with 1,3-propanediamine). The crystallographic investigation of 1 reveals a one-dimensional alternating zig-zag chain-like structure, made of dinuclear {LCuCo} units linked by thiocyanate bridges. The copper(II) ion is pentacoordinate to the N2O2 donor set of the Schiff base ligand in the basal plane, with the apical position occupied by the sulfur atom. The cobalt ion displays a strongly distorted (4 + 2) …

Stabilizing spin spirals and isolated skyrmions at low magnetic field exploiting vanishing magnetic anisotropy

2018

Skyrmions are topologically protected non-collinear magnetic structures. Their stability is ideally suited to carry information in, e.g., racetrack memories. The success of such a memory critically depends on the ability to stabilize and manipulate skyrmions at low magnetic fields. The non-collinear Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction originating from spin-orbit coupling drives skyrmion formation. It competes with Heisenberg exchange and magnetic anisotropy favoring collinear states. Isolated skyrmions in ultra-thin films so far required magnetic fields as high as several Tesla. Here, we show that isolated skyrmions in a monolayer of Co/Ru(0001) can be stabilized down to vanishing fields. Eve…

Gelling and the collective dynamics in ferroelectric liquid crystals

2020

Dielectric spectroscopy has been applied to investigate the dynamic behaviour of a ferroelectric liquid crystal in the smectic C* and smectic A phases confined in gel matrices of a fibre like (1D) or platelet like (2D) structure. These gel matrices were obtained from semicarbazide or bis-acylurea derivatives, which self assemble because of their H-bonding motif. The confinement strongly influences the magnitude of the spontaneous polarization and the collective fluctuations of the director detected as the Goldstone-mode. It is thus possible to detect gelation by dielectric spectroscopy. By this method it was possible to follow the destruction and restoration of the gel structure induced by …

SERRE PER FLORICOLTURA NELLA PALERMO DEL XIX SECOLO. VALORIZZAZIONE E RECUPERO APPROPRIATO

2019

During the nineteenth century the studies of “hygienist engineers” and “healthiness architects” concerning building sunlight exposure, natural lighting quality in confined spaces and visual comfort, found immediate application in both urban planning and building design at big and small scale level. New construction techniques were implemented with experimental use of iron and glass as innovative materials able to create original and transparent enclosed structures. In this context, some “functional” buildings like flowers and greens greenhouses contributed to define a new architectural language and an innovative approach in building envelope conception by means of passionate search for slen…

The Rail Quality Index as an Indicator of the “Global Comfort” in Optimizing Safety, Quality and Efficiency in Railway Rails

2012

AbstractThe proposed model uses the stochastic dynamic programming and in particular Markov decision processes applied to the Rail Quality Index (RQI - Italian Indice di Qualità del Binario, IQB).By performing the integrated analysis of the classes of variables which characterize the overall service quality (in terms of comfort and safety), the proposed mathematical approach allows to find the solutions to the decision-making process in function of the probability of deterioration of the state variables of the infrastructure over time and of the flow of available resources.
