Exchange coupling in a thiocyanato-bridged copper(II) chain: Computational approach to magnetostructural correlations
2021
Abstract In this article we report the synthesis and magneto-structural characterization of two new copper(II) compounds with thiocyanato and methyl(2-pyridil) ketone oxime (mpkOH), namely [Cu(NCS)(mpkO)(mpkOH)] (1) and [Cu(µ-NCS)(NCS)(mpkOH)]n (2). Compound 1 is a mononuclear complex that crystallizes as discrete units. Conversely, compound 2 is a single equatorial-axial end-to-end thiocyanato bridged polymeric chain of Cu(II) with the oxime as a co-ligand. The coordination geometry around the Cu(II) centers is distorted square pyramidal for 1 and 2. The magnetic susceptibility data for 2 reveal weak intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling, with J value −0.74(3) cm−1 and g = 2.10(1). The ap…
Discrete unusual mixed-bridged trinuclear CoIII2CoII and pentanuclear NiII coordination complexes supported by a phenolate-based ligand: theoretical …
2021
Two new complexes [CoIII2CoII(μ-OL)2(μ-OOCCH3)2(μ-N3)2(N3)2]·Et2O (1·Et2O) and [NiII5(μ-OL)4(μ-OOCCH3)2(OOCCH3)2(μ-N3)2]·CH3CN (2) (HOL = 2-((2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylamino)methyl)phenol) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Structural analysis revealed that 1 is a discrete trinuclear and 2 is a discrete pentanuclear coordination complex. In complex 1, terminal metal (CoIII) is in a distorted octahedral MN4O2 environment where coordination is satisfied by two nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom of the ligand, and an oxygen atom from the acetate group and two nitrogen atoms from azide (one each from the bridging and terminal ones). The centra…
Chiral Molecular Magnets: Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Behavior of the Series [M(L-tart)] (M = MnII, FeII, CoII, NiII;L-tart = (2R,3R)-(+)-tart…
2006
A new series of layered magnets with the formula [M(L-tartrate)] (M = Mn(II), Co(II), Fe(II), Ni(II); L-tartrate = (2R,3R)-(+)-tartrate) has been prepared. All of these compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the chiral orthorhombic space group I222, as found by X-ray structure analysis. Their structure consists of a three-dimensional polymeric network in which each metal shows distorted octahedral coordination bound to four L-tartrate ligands, two of which chelate through an alcohol and a carboxylate group and the other two bind terminally through a monodentate carboxylate group. The chirality of the ligand imposes a Delta conformation on all metal centers. Magnetically, the paramag…

2009
The synthesis and characterization of two 1D coordination polymers [Cu 2 (MHL)Cl 2 ][ClO 4 ] 2 · CH 3 CN · THF ( 2 · CH 3 CN · THF) and [Cu 2 (MPyPz)Cl 2 ][ClO 4 ] 2 · CH 3 CN ( 3 · CH 3 CN), having repetitive { Cu 2 II ( μ -Cl ) 2 } units, of m -xylyl-based ligands with terminal tridentate (2-pyridyl)alkylamine (MHL = α,α′-bis[ N -(2-pyridylethyl)- N -(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]- m -xylene) and (2-pyridyl)alkylamine/pyrazole (MPyPz = α,α′-bis[ N -(2-pyridylethyl)- N -(pyrazol-1-ylmethyl)amino]- m -xylene) coordination have been accomplished. X-ray crystallographic studies reveal that the copper(II) centers in the recently reported dichloro-bridged discrete { Cu 2 II ( μ -Cl ) 2 } complex […
Polypyridyl-based Cu(II) coordination polymers: Synthesis, structural and magnetic characterizations
2015
Abstract New Cu(II) coordination polymeric neutral chains of formula [Cu 2 (1,4-tpbd)Cl 2 L 2 ] (1,4-tpbd = N,N,N ′ N ′-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)benzene-1,4-diamine, L = 1,1,3,3-tetracyano-2-ethoxypropenide (tcnoet) − ( 1) or 1,1,3,3-tetracyano-2-propoxypropenide (tcnopr) − ( 2 )) have been synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The crystal structure determinations of 1 and 2 reveal in both cases a one-dimensional structure in which the 1,4-tpbd acts as a bis-chelating ligand and the two chloride anions as asymmetrical bridging ligands. The Cu⋯Cu distances through the bis-chelating 1,4-tpbd ligand (8.194(1) and 8.245(3) A for 1 …
Mono- and Di-chloro-bridged Discrete Dimers and Trimers and Mono-Chloro-Bridged 1D-Coordination Polymer of Copper(II). Magneto-structural Studies
2014
The synthesis, structural characterization, and magnetic properties of three copper(II) complexes, a mono-chloro-bridged [Cu2II(L6)2(μ-Cl)(Cl)(CuIICl4)] (1) and a dichloro-bridged [CuII2(L7)2(μ-Cl)2][ClO4]2 (3) discrete trimers and dimers, and a mono-chloro-bridged 1D-coordination polymer [CuII(L6)(μ-Cl)][ClO4]·CH3CN (2), are reported. Molecular structures were authenticated by X-ray crystallography. Temperature-dependent magnetic measurements carried out on powdered samples of 1–3 indicated a very weak antiferromagnetic exchange-coupling within the {CuII(μ-Cl)CuII(μ-Cl)CuIICl3}+ units in 1 [Curie-Weiss plot: θ = –0.19(1) K and g = 2.07(1)], a ferromagnetic behavior within {CuII(μ-Cl)2CuII}…

Inside Front Cover: Redox-Tunable Defects in Colloidal Photonic Crystals (Adv. Mater. 20/2005)
2005
The inside front cover illustrates reversible tuning of an intragap transmitting state induced by redox cycling, accomplished using a redox-active polyferrocenylsilane polyelectrolyte multilayer planar defect embedded in a colloidal photonic crystal (CPC) synthesized by a bottom–up method combining colloidal self-assembly and microcontact printing. In work reported on p. 2455 by Manners, Ozin, and co-workers, the wavelength position of the defect state can be changed by changing the oxidation state of the ferrocene moieties in the polymer backbone. This could find applications in electrochemically tunable microcavities, and—if light emitters are incorporated—electrochemically tunable CPC-ba…

Photoresponsive Ferroelectric Liquid-Crystalline Polymers
2007
The photoresponse of ferroelectric smectic side-chain liquid-crystalline (LC) polymers containing a photoisomerizable azobenzene derivative as a covalently linked photochromic side group is investigated. By static measurements in different photostationary states, the effect of trans-cis isomerization on the material's phase-transition temperatures and its ferroelectric properties (spontaneous electric polarization Ps and director tilt angle 0) are analyzed. It turns out that the Curie temperature (transition S C * to S A ) can be reversibly shifted by up to 17 °C. The molecular mechanism of this "photoferroelectric effect" is studied in detail using time-resolved measurements of the dye's o…
