Quantum paraelectric and induced ferroelectric states in
1996
Nominally pure has been studied by dielectric spectroscopy using small (linear regime) as well as large electrical fields (non-linear regime) up to . In addition measurements of the specific heat and its field-dependent contribution have been carried out. The field dependence of the dielectric constant and the specific heat can be well described by the transverse Ising Hamiltonian including tunnelling and external field terms. It gives evidence for the existence of polar clusters at low temperatures which are supposed to be associated with the quantum paraelectric state below in accord with recent free-energy calculations. The low-field third-harmonic susceptibility which measures the polar…
Valence band photoemission from thin iron films - A comparison of experimental and theoretical results
1998
Abstract In this contribution, we report on photoemission data from thin iron films on W(110) that have been carried out by means of spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy as well as Magnetic Circular Dichroism in valence band photoemission at the storage ring BESSY. These techniques give complementary information on the electronic and magnetic properties, such as exchange and spin–orbit splitting. We compare our experimental data to new photoemission calculations, which have been obtained in the framework of a fully relativistic one-step theory for ferromagnetic materials.
Polyoxometalates: From Magnetic Models to Multifunctional Materials
2002
In this article we have presented some recent achievements of the polyoxometalates in the fields of molecular magnetism and functional molecular materials. In the context of the molecular magnetism we have shown that POMs provide ideal examples of magnetic clusters with coexisting ferro and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions which can be investigated using a variety of magnetic techniques, including the Inelastic Neutron Scattering spectroscopy, to get a thorough characterization of the magnetic levels in these large clusters, and to test the validity of the spin hamiltonians commonly used in magnetism.
Ab initio Hartree-Fock calculations of LaMnO3 (110) surfaces
2003
We present the results of ab initio Hartree-Fock calculations of the LaMnO3 (110) surface. Using seven-plane slabs, periodic in 2D and containing three formula units, we compare the properties of a stoichiometric surface with oxygen vacancies, and non-stoichiometric, defect-free surfaces, analyze the dispersion of the effective charges near the surface, and calculate the surface energy before and after relaxation, for both ferromagnetric and antiferromagnetic spin orderings in a slab. q 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Critical Exponents and Randomness in SrTiO3 : Ca
1994
Since its discovery, the SrTiO3: Ca system is known to exhibit a number of features which were thought to arise from an impurity induced disorder. Non-linear dielectric measurements are used to obtain a more quantitative insight into this disorder. For 0.001 < xCa < 0.05, it is found that the non-linear susceptibility diverges at low temperatures. This is similar to what was previously reported in the dielectric random system KTaO3: Na. A method is proposed to quantify the contribution of the disorder to the non-linearities. It is found that the deviation from a true ferroelectric behaviour is not enough to call the low-temperature phase of SrTiO3: Ca a glass one. The maximum non-linearity …
Modeling the magnetic properties and Mössbauer spectra of multifunctional magnetic materials obtained by insertion of a spin-crossover Fe(III) comple…
2013
In this article, we present a theoretical microscopic approach to describe the magnetic and spectroscopic behavior of multifunctional hybrid materials which demonstrate spin crossover and ferromagnetic ordering. The low-spin to high-spin transition is considered as a cooperative phenomenon that is driven by the interaction of the electronic shells of the Fe ions with the full symmetric deformation of the local surrounding that is extended over the crystal lattice via the acoustic phonon field. The proposed model is applied to the analysis of the series [Fe(III)(sal2-trien)] [Mn(II)Cr(III)(ox)3]·solv, in short 1·solv, where solv = CH2Cl2, CH2Br2, and CHBr3.
Neutron diffraction studies of the molecular compound [Co 2(bta)]n (H4bta =1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid): In the quest of canted ferromagnetism
2013
The exchange mechanism and magnetic structure of the organic-inorganic layered molecule-based magnet [Co2(bta)]n (1) (H 4bta =1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid) have been investigated through variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements and supported with a series of neutron diffraction experiments. Cryomagnetic studies have shown an antiferromagnetic ordering at a transition temperature of 16 K that is followed by the appearance of a weak ferromagnetism below 11 K. The weak antiferromagnetic interlayer interaction plays an important role in this system in spite of the long interlayer separation. A ferromagnetic ordering is induced by applied magnetic fields greater than 1800…
Structure and Properties of GdAuSn and the GdAuSn/MnAuSn System
2006
The crystal structure of GdAuSn was refined by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction. Band structure calculations based on the structural data confirmed the antiferromagnetic ground state and the metallic behaviour of GdAuSn. 119mSn, 155Gd and 197Au Mossbauer spectroscopic studies were used to verify the values of the hyperfine parameters that were given by the band structure calculations. Band structure calculations of MnAuSn confirmed that this half-Heusler compound belongs to the family of half-metallic ferromagnets. Magnetic susceptibility, conductivity and Mossbauer studies were used to characterize granular material based on the half-Heusler ferromagnet MnAuSn in the antiferromagn…
Spin-polarization effects for electrons passing through thin iron and cobalt films
1993
Abstract Spin-dependent effects of the inelastic mean free path (IMFP) are evident for low-energy electrons passing through magnetized ferromagnetic films caused by a different attenuation within the layer. Values of IMFP for both spin components were determined for ultrathin iron and cobalt layers on W(1 1 0) by means of spin-resolving photoelectron spectroscopy.
Investigation of a novel material for magnetoelectronics: Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al
2003
Heusler compounds are promising candidates for future spintronics device applications. The electronic and magnetic properties of Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al, an electron-doped derivative of Co2CrAl, are investigated using circularly polarized synchrotron radiation and photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). Element specific imaging reveals needle shaped Cr rich phases in a homogeneous bulk of the Heusler compound. The ferromagnetic domain structure is investigated on an element-resolved basis using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) contrast in PEEM. The structure is characterized by micrometre-size domains with a superimposed fine ripple structure; the lateral resolution in these images is abo…
