Effects of heavy resistance/power training on maximal strength, muscle morphology, and hormonal response patterns in 60-75-year-old men and women.
2002
Eleven women (TRW; 64 ± 4 yrs) and ten men (TRM; 65 ± 5 yrs) participated in the strength/power training twice a week for 24 weeks. Basal concentrations of serum total and free testosterone, growth hormone (GH), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), cortisol and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) as well as acute responses of serum total and free testosterone, growth hormone (GH) were measured. Maximal 1RM strength in the squat, chair rise time and muscle fibre distribution and areas of type I and IIa and IIb of the vastus lateralis were also examined. 1RM squat increased in TRW by 26 (SDIO) % (p < .001), and in TRM by 35(7) % (p < .001) and chair rise time improved in both groups…
Effects of combined strength and sprint training on regulation of muscle contraction at the whole-muscle and single-fibre levels in elite master spri…
2008
The aims of this study were to investigate the mechanisms underlying (1) the ageing-related motor handicap at the whole muscle, cellular, contractile protein and myonuclear levels; and (2) ageing-related differences in muscle adaptability. In vivo muscles function was studied in the knee extensors. Decreases were observed in isokinetic and isometric torque outputs in old age in the sedentary men and women and elite master sprinters. A 20-week long specific sprint and resistance training successfully improved the maximal isometric force and rate of force development in a subgroup of master sprinters. In vitro measurements were performed in muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis muscle. Immu…
Distribution of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase—like immunoreactivity in the rat pineal organ
1985
The aim of the present investigation was to study the distribution in the rat pineal gland of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) which is essential for the formation of the melatonin synthesis-regulating substance noradrenaline (NA). In 5- and 8-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats DBH-like immunoreactivity (DBH-LI) was studied using polyclonal antibodies against DBH and the indirect immunofluorescent technique. DBH-LI was mainly located in pineal nerve fibres coming from the superior cervical ganglia. The intensity of the staining reaction was considerably lower than in non-pineal noradrenergic nerve fibres and the impression was gained by comparison of DBH-LI specimens with glyoxylic acid-trea…
Acid hydrolase activities in mouse cardiac and skeletal muscle following exhaustive exercise
1981
Acid hydrolase activities in skeletal and cardiac muscle were studied 5, 10 and 20 days after exhaustive intermittent running by untrained and endurance-trained mice. Exhaustion increased the activities of cathepsin D, beta-glucuronidase and ribonuclease, but not that of p-nitrophenylphosphatase in skeletal muscle of untrained mice. Activities were highest on the fifth day after exhaustion and decreased during the following two weeks. More intensive loading produced no changes in acid hydrolytic capacity in skeletal muscle of endurance-trained mice. Acid hydrolase activities in cardiac muscle of both untrained and trained mice were unaffected by exhaustive running. It is suggested that exha…
Radiolucent Carbon Fiber–Reinforced Pedicle Screws for Treatment of Spinal Tumors: Advantages for Radiation Planning and Follow-Up Imaging
2016
Objective Surgical treatment of spinal tumors regularly includes spinal instrumentation with pedicle screws. Most modern pedicle screws are made of titanium alloy, which is associated with artifacts on postoperative imaging such as computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging. These artifacts hamper radiation treatment planning and execution and follow-up imaging. Recently, carbon fiber–reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFRP) implants became available for posterior instrumentation with the aim to reduce imaging artifacts by implants. Methods Patients harboring spinal tumors underwent posterior stabilization using CFRP pedicle screws. Postoperative imaging was evaluated for implant a…
A presynaptic excitatory M1 muscarine receptor at postganglionic cardiac noradrenergic nerve fibres that is activated by endogenous acetylcholine.
1990
Rabbit atria were isolated with the extrinsic right vagus and sympathetic nerves intact and perfused with Tyrode solution. Noradrenaline overflow evoked by sympathetic nerve stimulation (SNS) at 3 Hz for 3 min was determined before, during, and after vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), also at 3 Hz and for 3 min. The VNS pulses preceded the SNS pulses by 3, 100 and 233 ms. Acetylcholine overflow was determined after labelling of the transmitter stores with [14C]choline. Pirenzepine 80 nmol/l failed to alter the muscarinic inhibition of noradrenaline overflow when the vago-sympathetic impulse intervals were 3 and 233 ms. At an interval of 100 ms VNS did not significantly inhibit noradrenaline ove…
A comparison of the Enk Fiberoptic Atomizer Set(™) with boluses of topical anaesthesia for awake fibreoptic intubation.
2016
We compared the Enk Fiberoptic Atomizer Set(™) with boluses of topical anaesthesia administered via the working channel during awake fibreoptic tracheal intubation in 96 patients undergoing elective surgery. Patients who received topical anaesthesia via the atomiser, compared with boluses via the fibreoptic scope, reported a better median (IQR [range]) level of comfort: 1 (1-3 [1-10]) vs. 4 (2-6 [1-10]), p < 0.0001; experienced a reduced total number of coughs: 6 (3-10 [0-34]) vs. 11 (6-13 [0-25]), p = 0.0055; and fewer distinct coughing episodes: 7% vs. 27% respectively, p = 0.0133. The atomiser technique was quicker: 5 (3-6 [2-12]) min vs. 6 (5-7 [2-15]) min, p = 0.0009; and required less…
Comparative evaluation between glass and polyethylene fiber reinforced composites: A review of the current literature
2017
Background Fiber reinforced composite (FRC) is a promising class of material that gives clinicians alternative treatment options. There are many FRC products available in the market based on either glass or polyethylene fiber type. The aim of this study was to present a comparison between glass and polyethylene fiber reinforced composites based on available literature review. Material and methods A thorough literature search, with no limitation, was done up to June 2017. The range of relevant publications was surveyed using PubMed and Google Scholar. From the search results, articles related to our search terms were only considered. An assessment of these articles was done by two individual…
A semi-empirical stress-strain model for equivalent strut fiber-section modeling of infilled frames
2017
Infill-frame interaction is commonly modeled by means of equivalent strut macro-models. The main difficulty in using this phenomenological approach is to properly calibrate a force-displacement curve for the struts, as this depends not only on the geometrical and mechanical properties, but more specifically on the different potential damage mechanisms which may occur for the infill-frame system subject to lateral forces. If fiber-section elements are used as diagonal struts, the force-displacement curve is substituted by a stress-strain law. In both cases, the attribution of the inelastic law of the struts, based on a mechanical approaches, is not valid in general, as mechanical approaches …
EVALUATION OF FRAGILITY OF INFILLED FRAME STRUCTURES SUBJECT AFTERSHOCKS BY MEANS OF DOUBLE INCREMENTAL DYNAMIC ANALYSIS APPROACH
2018
The paper investigates the role of masonry infill walls on the seismic fragility of reinforced concrete structures subject to mainshock/aftershock sequences. An assessment framework aimed at determining aftershock fragility curves of bare frames and infilled frames is presented. The framework is based on a Double Incremental Dynamic Analysis (D-IDA) approach, which provides the adoption of ground motions defined by combining a fixed intensity mainshock with a set of variable intensity aftershocks. Mainshock (MS) intensity is scaled several times and combined with the same set of aftershocks (AS). Chord-rotation and shear limit states are specifically defined to consider the influence of mas…
