Faraday effect in standard optical fibers: dispersion of the effective Verdet constant

1996

We have measured the Faraday effect in silica standard optical fibers in the wavelength range 458-1523 nm. An effective Verdet constant Vef that exhibits a linear dependence on the square of the optical frequency ν is defined: V(ef) = (0.142 ± 0.004) × 10(-28) ν(2) rad T(-1) m(-1). We demonstrate that the negative effects of a small linear birefringence can be minimized by adjustment of the input polarization to an optimum state.

Suppression of stimulated Raman scattering in optical fibres by power-controlled multifrequency pumping

1999

International audience; We present a method for suppressing the stimulated Raman scattering process induced by a multifrequency pump field propagating in a normally dispersive single-mode fibre. The suppression process is completely achieved by suitably choosing the frequency separation between the pumps, as well as the power distribution among the frequency components of the pump field. The experimental spectra show the effectiveness of this suppression process for a dual-frequency pumping configuration.

Wavelength conversion from 1.3 µm to 1.5 µm in single-mode optical fibres using Raman-assisted three-wave mixing

2000

International audience; We theoretically analyse the achievement of wide-range all-optical wavelength conversion of a 1.31 µm signal to an idler wave in the 1.5 µm spectral region by Raman-assisted three-wave mixing in single-mode optical fibres. Raman-assisted three-wave mixing allows efficient conversion on a large frequency detuning bandwidth while alleviating the need for stringent phase-matching conditions.

Optical aging behaviour naturally induced on As_2S_3 microstructured optical fibres

2014

The efficiency and the stability of As2S3 microstructured optical fibres (MOFs) are limited by the shift of their optical properties that occurs over time due to a naturally induced aging process. Such sensitivity becomes more crucial for long optical path. Among the variety of fibre designs, the MOFs are developed for promising photonics applications such as supercontinuum generation for example. In the present work, we carried out an extensive aging study on As2S3 chalcogenide MOFs in ambient atmosphere. The evolution of the fibre transmission spectrum has been studied with regards to exposure time. The analysis of the transmission line profile was performed in terms of different spectral…

GigaHertz to TeraHertz Ultrashort Pulse Sources at 1555 nm

2006

We experimentally study the generation of ultrashort pulses through multiple four wave-mixing in optical fibers. Well-separated transform-limited Gaussian pulses are generated at repetition rates ranging from 20 GHz to 1 THz around 1555 nm.

Sensor Applications Of Optical Fibre Resonant Rings Based On Polarisation Sensitive Couplers

1989

Optical fibre resonant rings based on polarisation sensitive couplers give rise to a set of new resonant configurations. Two of them exhibit interesting sensor applications since small changes of the polarisation state produce large effects on the output, due to the resonant characteristics of the system. The sensor arrangements proposed have the advantage of requiring no drift compensation of the optical fibre interferometer against environmental fluctuations, since the parameters used to determine the measurand are the finesse and the visibility but not a phase change. Thus, the system can be used to sense low frequency measurands. Among the particular sensor applications that can be sugg…

2013

We have shown through extensive numerical simulations that application of passive nonlinear reshaping in normal-dispersion optical fibers could produce femtosecond parabolic pulses (a few hundreds fs) modern femtosecond lasers and commercially available fibers.

High accuracy measurement of Poisson's ratio of optical fibers and its temperature dependence using forward-stimulated Brillouin scattering

2022

Transverse acoustic mode resonances enable a high accuracy determination of Poisson’s ratio and elastic properties of optical fibers. An all-optical pump and probe technique is used for efficient excitation and accurate characterization of both, radial and torsional-radial acoustic resonances of optical fibers. Simple and precise algebraic expressions for the frequencies of high order acoustic resonances are derived, enabling a rigorous analysis of the experimental data using standard least squares fitting. Following this approach, the determination of Poisson’s ratio does not require the measurement of any physical length, but only frequency measurements are required. An accuracy better th…

In-Fiber Acousto-Optics for the Broadband Measurement of the UV-Induced Refractive Index Change in Photosensitive Fibers

2019

In fiber acousto-optics has been demonstrated to be a versatile, highly sensitive technique that allows characterizing different parameters of singlemode or few-mode fibers, such as dispersion curves, radius or core refractive index, in a broadband wavelength range. The working principle of the technique relies in the fact that a variation in a parameter of the fiber leads to a shift in the optical wavelength that fulfills the acousto-optic phase matching condition. Thus, by measuring this wavelength shift it is possible to evaluate the change in the parameter under study. The technique shows a low detection limit: for example, it is as low as 10-8 for the core refractive index, in singlemo…

Analytical evaluation of chromatic dispersion in photonic crystal fibers

2005

We present a two-dimensional modal approach for the evaluation, in an analytical manner, of chromatic dispersion in any kind of optical fiber. It combines an iterative Fourier technique to compute the propagation constant at any fixed wavelength and an analytical procedure to calculate its derivatives. The proposed formulation takes into account the effective anisotropy of the interfaces and allows us to deal with microstructured fibers, in general, and specifically with realistic photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), including arbitrary spatial refractive-index distributions of dispersive and absorbing materials. This fast and accurate numerical technique is extremely useful for both analysis an…
