Ultrahigh-birefringent squeezed lattice photonic crystal fiber with rotated elliptical air holes.

2010

We report an experimental realization of a highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber as a result of compressing a regular hexagonal structure. The experimental measurements estimate a group birefringence of approximately 5.5x10(-3) at 1550 nm in good agreement with the numerical results. We study the influence of compressing the regular structure at different directions and magnifications, obtaining a method to realistically enhance the phase birefringence while moderating the group birefringence.

X-ray micro-tomography based FEM modelling of hygroexpansion in PLA composites reinforced with birch pulp fibres

2017

This article presents a microscale modelling approach coupled with X-ray computed micro-tomography for the evaluation of material properties of polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced by birch pulp fibers under the effect of moisture. The results in terms of elastic moduli and hygroexpansion deformation were found in good agreement with the measurements taken at different levels of water uptake.

Effects of Nylon 6,6 Nanofibrous Mats on Thermal Properties and Delamination Behavior of High Performance CFRP Laminates

2014

none 8 no Nylon 6,6 electrospun nanofibrous membranes interleaved in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) laminates have been proposed as a means to provide a higher threshold value to delamination on structural sites where composites are more prone to develop such failure. A model, highly crosslinked thus inherently brittle, epoxy matrix was selected for its high Young’s modulus and glass transition temperature exceeding 250 °C. The influence of the Nylon 6,6 nanofibres on the curing behaviour of the matrix and on the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of the cured resin was investigated. These properties were related to the features of the epoxy resin and of the resin impregnated…

A mechanistic model on the role of “radially-running” collagen fibers on dissection properties of human ascending thoracic aorta.

2014

Aortic dissection (AoD) is a common condition that often leads to life-threatening cardiovascular emergency. From a biomechanics viewpoint, AoD involves failure of load-bearing microstructural components of the aortic wall, mainly elastin and collagen fibers. Delamination strength of the aortic wall depends on the load-bearing capacity and local micro-architecture of these fibers, which may vary with age, disease and aortic location. Therefore, quantifying the role of fiber micro-architecture on the delamination strength of the aortic wall may lead to improved understanding of AoD. We present an experimentally-driven modeling paradigm towards this goal. Specifically, we utilize collagen fib…

Inclusion of the periodontal ligament in studies on the biomechanical behavior of fiber post-retained restorations: An in vitro study and three-dimen…

2016

Endodontically treated teeth are known to have reduced structural strength. Periodontal ligament may influence fracture resistance. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of including the periodontal ligament in biomechanical studies about endodontically treated and restored teeth. Forty human maxillary central incisors were treated endodontically and randomly divided into four groups: non-crowned (with and without an artificial ligament) and crowned (with and without an artificial ligament) with glass-ceramic crowns. All groups received prefabricated glass-fiber posts and a composite resin core. Specimens were tested, under a flexural–compressive load, until failure occurre…

Near infrared radio-luminescence of O2 loaded radiation hardened silica optical fibers: A candidate dosimeter for harsh environments

2014

We report on an experimental investigation of the infrared Radio-Luminescence (iRL) emission of interstitial O2 molecules loaded in radiation hardened pure-silica-core and fluorine-doped silica-based optical fibers (OFs). The O2 loading treatment successfully dissolved high concentrations of oxygen molecules into the silica matrix. A sharp luminescence at 1272 nm was detected when 2.5 cm of the treated OFs were irradiated with 10 keV X-rays. This emission originates from the radiative decay of the first excited singlet state of the embedded O2 molecules. The dose, dose-rate, and temperature dependencies of the infrared emission are studied through in situ optical measurements. The results s…

Ultrahigh-Q Tunable Whispering-Gallery-Mode Microresonator

2009

Typical microresonators exhibit a large frequency spacing between resonances and a limited tunability. This impedes their use in a large class of applications which require a resonance of the microcavity to coincide with a predetermined frequency. Here, we experimentally overcome this limitation with highly prolate-shaped whispering-gallery-mode "bottle microresonators" fabricated from standard optical glass fibers. Our resonators combine an ultra-high quality factor of 360 million, a small mode volume, and near lossless fibre coupling, characteristic of whispering-gallery-mode resonators, with a simple and customizable mode structure enabling full tunability.

Flat supercontinuum generation pumped by amplified noise-like pulses from a figure-eight erbium-doped fiber laser

2017

The conditions to obtain noise-like pulses (NLPs) from a figure-eight fiber laser (F8L) and their application for supercontinuum (SC) generation in the anomalous dispersion regime are reported. The F8L is designed to remove the undesired low-intensity background radiation from pulse emission, generating NLPs with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 17.43 nm at the fundamental repetition frequency of 0.8 MHz. After amplification, NLPs reach a maximum average power of 9.2 mW and 123.32 nm spectral bandwidth. By controlling the amplifier pump power, flat SC generation is demonstrated through both a 800 m long spool of SMF-28 fiber and a piece of 5 m long highly nonlinear optical fiber. The results de…

Tunable Dual-Wavelength Thulium-Doped Fiber Laser Based on FBGs and a Hi-Bi FOLM

2017

A tunable dual-wavelength thulium doped fiber laser is demonstrated experimentally. For the first time for the 2- $\mu \text{m}$ wavelength band we propose the independent tuning of the generated laser lines based on fiber Bragg gratings and the use of a Hi-Bi fiber optic loop mirror for the fine adjustment of the cavity losses to obtain stable dual-wavelength operation. Dual-wavelength laser generation with the laser lines separation in the range from 0.3 to 6.5 nm is obtained. The laser emission exhibits an optical signal-to-noise ratio better than 56 dB. Improved stability with output power fluctuations less than 1 dB is observed in dual-wavelength generation with equal power of lines.
