Study and evaluation of nano-structured cellulose fibers as additive for restoration of historical mortars and plasters

2017

Abstract UPM bio-fibrils are nano-structured cellulose fibers (nano-fibrils) produced by UPM Kymmene-Corporation, a Finnish company. This paper reports a preliminary study about nano-fibrils to determine their possible use for restoration of historical mortars and plasters. The aim of this study is to investigate the behavior of some mixtures added with nano-fibrils in their properties for conservative purposes. These mixtures reproduce the composition of historical mortars and plasters, made of natural hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5) and river sand. After 28 days of hardening, the properties of specimens with nano-fibrils were compared with untreated one to understand how nano-fibrils interact wi…

Casein-loaded proteoliposomes: novel delivery strategy to inhibit Aβ1-40 fibrillogenesis in Alzheimer disease

2018

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic and progressive syndrome, which represents the most common cause of dementia worldwide. A pathological and characteristic AD hallmark is the deposition of amyloid plaques, composed by well-ordered amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) fibers, in brain tissue. The Aβ aggregation process follows typical nucleation-polymerization kinetics, characterized by structural intermediates with specific dimensions, morphologies and cytotoxic activity. Some evidences shifted researchers’ attention to smaller soluble Aβ prefibrillar oligomers as they result the most toxic species. Therefore, novel therapeutic strategies target oligomers or prefibrillar aggregates rather…

Casein-loaded proteoliposomes: Drug Delivery Systems and Potential Inhibitors in Aβ1-40 Fibrillogenesis

2018

Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents the most common cause of dementia worldwide. The early symptom is usually a short-term memory loss, followed by symptoms including problems with language, disorientation, mood swings, loss of motivation, not managing self-care, and behavioral issues, until loss of body functions and, ultimately, death. The cause of AD is poorly understood and the diagnosis is complex. One of the main AD hallmarks is the extracellular deposition in brain tissue of proteinaceous amyloid plaques, composed by well-ordered fibrillary aggregates of the amyloid β-peptide (Aβ). The Aβ aggregation process follows typical nucleation-polymerization kinetics, characterized by structu…

The Role of Patient-Specific Morphological Features of the Left Atrial Appendage on the Thromboembolic Risk Under Atrial Fibrillation

2022

BackgroundA large majority of thrombi causing ischemic complications under atrial fibrillation (AF) originate in the left atrial appendage (LAA), an anatomical structure departing from the left atrium, characterized by a large morphological variability between individuals. This work analyses the hemodynamics simulated for different patient-specific models of LAA by means of computational fluid–structure interaction studies, modeling the effect of the changes in contractility and shape resulting from AF.MethodsThree operating conditions were analyzed: sinus rhythm, acute atrial fibrillation, and chronic atrial fibrillation. These were simulated on four patient-specific LAA morphologies, each…

VALUTAZIONE DEI MARKERS INFIAMMATORI E DEGLI INDICI DI DISFUNZIONE ENDOTELIALE IN UNA POPOLAZIONE DI PAZIENTI CON FIBRILLAZIONE ATRIALE PERMANENTE CO…

2022

A method for quantifying atrial fibrillation organization based on wave-morphology similarity

2002

A new method for quantifying the organization of single bipolar electrograms recorded in the human atria during atrial fibrillation (AF) is presented. The algorithm relies on the comparison between pairs of local activation waves (LAWs) to estimate their morphological similarity, and returns a regularity index (/spl rho/) which measures the extent of repetitiveness over time of the detected activations. The database consisted of endocardial data from a multipolar basket catheter during AF and intraatrial recordings during atrial flutter. The index showed maximum regularity (/spl rho/=1) for all atrial flutter episodes and decreased significantly when increasing AF complexity as defined by W…
