Increased plasma levels of fibrinogen in acute and chronic ischemic coronary syndromes.

1999

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the pathophysiological role of fibrinogen in patients with chronic or acute ischemic coronary syndromes on the basis of epidemiological and clinical evidences showing the importance of fibrinogen as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis progression. METHODS: We evaluated the behavior of plasma fibrinogen in 310 hospitalized patients with 1) acute myocardial infarction (n = 98); 2) unstable angina (n = 87); 3) chronic ischemic heart disease (n = 75); and 4) in controls without myocardial ischemia (n = 50). Fibrinogen was evaluated, by using the Clauss method, on day 1 and 5 during in hospital-stay and at 6-month follow…

Protein Adsorption Hysteresis and Transient States of Fibrinogen and BMP-2 as Model Mechanisms for Proteome-Binding to Implants

2020

Abstract Protein adsorption studies returned to the focus of medical therapeutics, when it was found that up to 2500 non-plasma proteins adsorbed to hip implants during arthroplastic surgery, challenging peri-implant healing models. Questions have re-emerged as to the implications of uncontrolled protein unfolding after adsorption. In past studies on the cooperativity of protein binding we discovered protein adsorption hysteresis, a thermodynamically irreversible process. The present precursory study comprises real-time kinetic (TIRF-Rheometry) and equilibrium (125I-tracer ) studies on the hysteretic binding of fibrinogen and rhBMP-2 to titanium and glass surfaces via transient states. Ther…

Should inflammatory pathways be targeted for the prevention and treatment of hypertension?

2019

Hypertension is the most common modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD)1 and is a leading cause of death globally.2 Hypertension and CVD share common antecedent risk factors which include physical inactivity, obesity and excess alcohol intake.3 Though these established risk factors explain a large proportion of hypertension risk, its pathogenesis is still not fully established as it appears that other additional lifestyle and genetic factors may be involved. There is therefore a need to identify and evaluate putative risk factors that may increase our knowledge of hypertension development, may have causal or predictive relevance, and which will help develop preventive and ma…

Kuivaveren valkoisuus ja kliiniset verimuuttujat

2014

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää kuivaverianalyysin yhteyksiä kliinisiin verimuuttujiin, erityisesti laskoon. Lisäksi menetelmän luotettavuutta arvioitiin vertailemalla samalta koehenkilöltä kerättyjä A- ja B-näytteitä. Kuivaverianalyysissä sormenpääverinäytteestä kerätään näytelasille useita veripisaroita, joiden annetaan kuivua. Pisaroiden kuivuessa niihin muodostuu digitoiduissa näytteissä valkoisina erottuvia alueita. Kirjallisuuden perusteella on oletettavissa, …

Effect of Fibrin Sealant on Seroma Formation Post-Incisional Hernia Repair

2020

Background: Development of seroma after incisional hernia repair is a common complication. Our study aims to compare the outcomes of sublay incisional hernia repairs with or without spray instillation of fibrin glue. Methods: We enrolled fifty patients undergoing incisional hernia repair. In all patients a suction drain was placed in the subcutaneous space. In one group (FG) 4 ml fibrin glue was instilled in the subcutaneous space. In the control group (C) patients did not receive any prevention measure. Wounds fluids were collected on post-operative day 1 (POD) and once daily until drain removal. All patients were followed up by ultrasound on POD 15, 20, 40, 60. Results: Drain fluid produc…

Hemostasis and ageing

2008

Abstract On March 19, 2008 a Symposium on Pathophysiology of Ageing and Age-Related Diseases was held in Palermo, Italy. The lecture of D. Mari on Hemostasis and ageing is summarized herein. Physiological ageing is associated with increased plasma levels of many proteins of blood coagulation together with fibrinolysis impairment. This may be of great concern in view of the known association between vascular and thromboembolic diseases and ageing. On the other hand, centenarians are characterized by a state of hypercoagulability and possession of several high-risk alleles and well-known atherothrombotic risk markers but this appears to be compatible with longevity and/or health. Parameters c…
