Gliofibromas (including malignant forms), and gliosarcomas: a comparative study and review of the literature

The presence of connective tissue elements in gliomas necessitates in every case a thorough analysis of the character and derivation of such elements to allow the formulation of an appropriate diagnosis. Four cases are presented in this paper. In cases 1 and 2 (anaplastic astrocytomas in two children, 9 and 4 years old, respectively) all the neoplastic elements were astrocytes and their ability to produce or indirectly promote the production of reticulin and collagen fibers accounted for the presence of such elements in close association with the tumor cells. Myofibroma is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm rarely found in oral cavity. Typically, this lesion is seen in neonates and infants with few cases reported in adults patients. In the oral cavity, myofibroma occurs within the submucosal or intramuscular tissue and has a predilection by the tongue, buccal mucosa and lips. Microscopically, a typical biphasic pattern can be observed. Misdiagnosis included benign and malignant spindle cell lesions of nerve tissue or smooth muscle origin, such as neurofibroma, leiomyoma and sarcomas. Neurofibroma is a benign neoplasm derived from peripheral nerves. Most of these are associated with Neurofibromatosis but may also occur as solitary lesions. When found on the head and neck they are generally located in the soft tissue. Intraosseous location is very rare. The following report describes a case of an intraosseous neurofibroma located in the left mandibular ramus of a 14-year-old child. The patient did not had clinical evidence of the lesion and it was found on a routine radiographic examination. This paper intends to present clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features of a case of gigantiform cementoma manifesting in a 14-year-old boy, without any familial involvement. He has been followed for 3 years. Further cases from the literature have been reviewed that confirm a similar clinicopathologic picture. This is the first case report that describes "non-familial gigantiform cementoma" after the World Health Organisation's classification of 2005.

We present an atypical case of neurofibromatosis marked by young age at onset, rapid invasiveness of the tumor, the presence of curious autonomic symptoms, cranial malformation and congenital microphthalmus, a combination that suggests a new syndrome, which might be called childhood microphthalmic neurofibromatosis.

Introduction: A study is made of the principal characteristics of the oral lesions biopsied in our Service of Oral Surgery and histologically diagnosed as corresponding to fibro-osseous lesions of the maxillas. Patients and methods: A retrospective review was made of all the biopsies made in a Service of Oral Surgery between 1996 and 2003. The reason for consultation was analyzed, along with patient age, sex, clinical and radiological characteristics, tentative diagnosis, histological diagnosis and treatment provided. Abstract Introduction Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominant disorder that occurs across all ethnic groups and affects approximately one in 4000 individuals. One of the most noticeable characteristics of the disease is the development of neurofibromas. Case presentation A total of 258 patients (131 women, 127 men) with neurofibromatosis type 1 were evaluated between 1994 and 2004 in our hospital's dermatology department.
