A Monte Carlo Study of Living Polymers in 2D: Effect of Small Chains on Static Properties

1996

A slithering snake algorithm is combined with a binding and breaking chain algorithm to simulate the static behavior of living polymers according to Cates' description. It is shown that this simple two-dimensional simulation on a square lattice gives good agreement with the mean field theory. However, the large amount of small contour length chains for small values of the mean average length 〈L 〉 appears to be one of the reasons for the discrepancies observed between the simulated results and the mean field theory. This finding could explain disagreements between experimental observation and theory. Also, the results are not in favor of a swelling of the greater chains by the smaller one.

Pressure-Induced Formation of Diblock Copolymer "Micelles" in Supercritical Fluids. A Combined Study by Small Angle Scattering Experiments and Mean-F…

2004

We developed a simple mean-field theory to describe polymer and AB diblock copolymer phase separation in supercritical (SC) fluids. The highly compressible SC fluid has been described by using a phenomenological hole theory, properly extended to consider the solvent/polymer/vacancy pseudoternary mixture. The model has been applied to describe the phase behavior of AB-diblock copolymers under the assumption of a strong solvent selectivity for just one copolymer chain. In our model the solvent selectivity is a strong function of the external pressure because in compressible fluids vacancies reduce the number of favorable solvent-polymer contacts. The combined effect of the pressure on the ave…

A Unified Theory of Liquid-Liquid Demixing and Polymer Formation Kinetics

2009

Sickle hemoglobin is a natural hemoglobin mutation with a hydrophobic replacement of a charged aminoacid on the molecular surface. This leads to aggregation into rigid helical structures (“polymerization”), the underlying cause of sickle cell disease. It has also been shown that polymerization occurs in close correspondence with the phase transition of liquid-liquid demixing , or with the critically diverging fluctuations of local concentration occurring in its proximity. Due to this correspondence, polymerization kinetics remarkably appear to exhibit, with respect to demixing temperature, the same universal scaling features shown by amplitudes and lifetimes of fluctuations occurring in pro…

Simulation of Copolymer Bottle-Brushes

2007

The structure of bottle-brush polymers with a rigid backbone and flexible side chains is studied in three dimensions, varying the grafting density, the side chain length, and the solvent quality. Some preliminary results of theoretical scaling considerations for one-component bottle-brush polymers in a good solvent are compared with Monte Carlo simulations of a simple lattice model. For the simulations a variant of the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM) allowing for simultaneous growth of all side chains in the Monte Carlo sampling is employed. For a symmetrical binary (A,B) bottle-brush polymer, where two types (A,B) of flexible side chains are grafted with one chain end to the backb…

Scattering function and the dynamics of phase separation in polymer mixtures under shear flow

1988

The phenomenological mean-field theory describing concentration fluctuations and spinodal decomposition of binary mixtures of long flexible macromolecules is generalized to mixtures under steady shear flow. This shear flow leads to a partial orientation and stretching of the coils, as well as to an anisotropic deformation of concentration fluctuations. Generalizing the approach of Onuki and Kawasaki, we obtain the collective scattering function describing these concentration fluctuations in the mixture under shear flow. Both the steady-state situation in the one-phase region and the initial stages of spinodal decomposition for concentrations inside of the spinodal curve are considered.

Pressure-induced cooperative spin transition in ironII 2D coordination polymers: room-temperature visible spectroscopic study.

2011

For the 2D coordination polymers [Fe(3-Fpy)(2)M(II)(CN)(4)] (M(II) = Ni, Pd, Pt), the pressure-induced spin crossover behavior has been investigated at 298 K by monitoring the distinct optical properties associated with each spin state. Cooperative first-order spin transition characterized by a piezohysteresis loop ca. 0.1 GPa wide was observed for the three derivatives. Application of the mean field regular solution theory has enabled estimation of the cooperative parameter, Γ(p), and the enthalpy, ΔH(HL)(p), associated with the spin transition for each derivative. These values, found in the intervals 6.8-7.9 and 18.6-20.8 kJ mol(-1), respectively, are consistent with those previously repo…

Hunting for new physics signals in the LHC era

2021

Quantum effects, anomalies and renormalization in Electrodynamics, Cosmology and Black Holes

2023

Effective charge from lattice QCD

2020

Using lattice configurations for quantum chromodynamics (QCD) generated with three domain-wall fermions at a physical pion mass, we obtain a parameter-free prediction of QCD's renormalisation-group-invariant process-independent effective charge, $\hat\alpha(k^2)$. Owing to the dynamical breaking of scale invariance, evident in the emergence of a gluon mass-scale, this coupling saturates at infrared momenta: $\hat\alpha(0)/\pi=0.97(4)$. Amongst other things: $\hat\alpha(k^2)$ is almost identical to the process-dependent (PD) effective charge defined via the Bjorken sum rule; and also that PD charge which, employed in the one-loop evolution equations, delivers agreement between pion parton di…
