Effect of Prolonged Military Field Training on Neuromuscular and Hormonal Responses and Shooting Performance in Warfighters

2018

Introduction: Previous studies have shown that military field training (MFT) has effects on warfighters’ hormonal responses, neuromuscular performance, and shooting accuracy. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes in body composition, upper and lower body strength, serum hormone concentrations of testosterone (TES) and cortisol (COR), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and shooting accuracy during prolonged MFT. Methods: Serum hormone concentrations, isometric strength of the upper and lower extremities, and shooting performance were measured four times during the study: before MFT (PRE), after 12 d (MID), at the end of MFT (PO…

2016

Chilocoris capensis n. sp. collected from fallen ripe figs of broom cluster fig Ficus sur Forsskal, 1775, the first burrower bug species of the genus Chilocoris Mayr, 1865 recorded in the Republic of South Africa, is described and compared with Chilocoris laevicollis Horvath, 1919, the morphologically most closely allied Afrotropical species. Additionally, an annotated checklist of burrower bug species recorded in the Republic of South Africa is provided. The known biology of Afrotropical Chilocoris species is briefly summarized.

Synthesis, configuration, and calcium modulatory properties of enantiomerically pure 5-oxo-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydroquinoline-3-carboxylates.

1992

Enantiomerically pure hexahydroquinolinones of the structural type 9 were prepared by a variation of the Hantzsch synthesis in which an optically active acetoacetate served as a chiral auxiliary reagent. Determinations of the de and ee values are described. The absolute configurations of the optically pure products were characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The antipodes 9a and 9b exhibited calcium antagonistic activities on smooth musculature; the (S)-(-)-enantiomer 9b was the more potent compound with regard to the EC50 values which differed by a factor of 100; the intrinsic activity of 9b was 1.2, compared with a value of 0.54 for 9a. On the other hand, R-(+)-9a exerted positiv…

Comprehension of metaphors and idioms in patients with Alzheimer's disease - A longitudinal study

2001

Language in patients with Alzheimer's disease has been extensively studied, with the exception of non-literal language comprehension. However, in our speech, we often make use of expressions, which are not necessarily interpreted on a literal ground. Comprehension of metaphors and idioms was examined in 39 patients with probable early Alzheimer's disease. The results showed that the decline of figurative language is not an early symptom of dementia and can occur independently from the impairment of propositional language. It was also found that metaphors and idioms differ as far as the predominant kind of error is concerned.

Proportion of odorants impacts the configural versus elemental perception of a binary blending mixture in newborn rabbits.

2011

WOS: 000295167200002; International audience; Processing of odor mixtures by neonates is weakly understood. Previous studies showed that a binary mixture of ethyl isobutyrate/ethyl maltol (odorants A/B) blends in newborn rabbits at the 30/70 ratio: Pups would perceive a configural odor in addition to the components' odors. Here, we investigated whether the emergence of this additional odor in AB is determined by specific ratio(s) of A and B. To that goal, we tested whether pups discriminated between AB mixtures with lower (A(-)B, 8/92 ratio) or higher (A(+)B, 68/32) proportion of A. In Experiment 1, pups conditioned to A (or B) responded to A(-)B and A(+)B but not to AB. In Experiment 2, pu…

Synthesis, resolution, stereochemistry, and molecular modeling of (R)- and (S)-2-acetyl-1-(4’-chlorophenyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinol…

2007

Abstract Recently we identified ( R , S )-2-acetyl-1-(4′-chlorophenyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline ( 6 ) as a potent non-competitive AMPA receptor antagonist able to prevent epileptic seizures. We report here the optimized synthesis of compound 6 , its resolution by chiral preparative HPLC, and the absolute configuration of ( R )-enantiomer established by X-ray diffractometry. The biological tests of the single enantiomers revealed that higher anticonvulsant and antagonistic effects reside in ( R )-enantiomer as also suggested by molecular modeling studies.

The WHAAM Application: a Tool to Support the Evidence-Based Practice in the Functional Behaviour Assessment

2018

BackgroundThe most recent computing technologies can promote the application of evidence-based practice (EBP) in the field of applied behaviour analysis (ABA).ObjectiveThe study describes how the use of technology can simplify the application of EBPs in ABA.MethodsThe Web Health Application for ADHD Monitoring (WHAAM) application demonstrates this in the following two case studies. We are monitoring dysfunctional behaviours, collecting behavioural data, performing systematic direct observations, creating both visual baseline and intervention charts and evaluating the planned interventions using the TAU-U statistical index.ResultsSignificant positive changes of children’s problem behaviours …

24-hour-variation of pineal gland volume, pinealocyte nuclear volume and mitotic activity in male Sprague-Dawley rats

1983

In two experiments carried out on two alternate days, the 24-h-rhythmicity of pineal gland volume, pinealocyte nuclear size in cortex and medulla and mitotic activity were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats, to assess to what extent morphological parameters reflect the pronounced day/night differences in pineal melatonin formation. Pineal volume exhibited statistically significant changes in the second experiment only, with a distinct trough at 6 p.m. Karyometry revealed highly variable patterns. In the first experiment, pinealocyte nuclear changes lacked parallelism in cortex and medulla. The cortex exhibited a bimodal curve with peaks at noon of the first day and at 6 a.m. of the second …

Detecting spatio-temporal mortality clusters of European countries by sex and age.

2018

[EN] Background: Mortality decreased in European Union (EU) countries during the last century. Despite these similar trends, there are still considerable differences in the levels of mortality between Eastern and Western European countries. Sub-group analysis of mortality in Europe for different age and sex groups is common, however to our knowledge a spatio-temporal methodology as in this study has not been applied to detect significant spatial dependence and interaction with time. Thus, the objective of this paper is to quantify the dynamics of mortality in Europe and detect significant clusters of mortality between European countries, applying spatio-temporal methodology. In addition, th…

Behaviour of salivary testosterone and cortisol in men during an Ironman Triathlon

2021

Endurance exercise induces notable acute hormonal responses on the gonadal and adrenal hormones. The purpose of this study was to assess the changes in salivary testosterone (Ts), salivary cortisol (Cs) and T/C ratio during long-distance triathlon. Ten well-trained male triathletes participated in the study and were assessed for hormonal changes at four time-points (pre-competition, post-swimming, post-cycling, and post-running phases). Ts decreased from pre-competition to post-swimming (from 93.37 pg/mL to 57.63 pg/mL; p < .01) and increased during two other parts of the competition to almost pre-competition values (cycling: 79.20 pg/mL, p = .02; running: 89,66 pg/mL, p = .04, respectively…
