Planar metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency for plasmonic sensing.

2009

We experimentally demonstrate a planar metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency at optical frequencies. The structure consists of an optically bright dipole antenna and an optically dark quadrupole antenna, which are cut-out structures in a thin gold film. A pronounced coupling-induced reflectance peak is observed within a broad resonance spectrum. A metamaterial sensor based on these coupling effects is experimentally demonstrated and yields a sensitivity of 588 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 3.8.

Parkinson's disease and segmental coordination during modified figure of eight walking turning task

2016

Turning while walking is problematic for individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). We hypothesized there would be instability and turning difficulty for the PD subjects while performing a complex motor skill task of the modified figure of eight (MFE) walking task. There were 26 subjects (10 males and 16 females) with clinical diagnosis of “idiopathic” PD and undergoing L-dopa treatment participating in this study. The PD subjects performed the clinical balance modified figure of eight (MFE) test. The 3-D positions of the head, trunk and pelvis were recorded and analyzed. The angular displacement and angular velocity of the head, trunk and pelvis were calculated. Counter-clockwise and clock…

Assessment of proliferative activity in breast cancer: MIB-1 immunohistochemistry versus mitotic figure count.

1999

Abstract The proliferative activity is one of the most important single prognostic parameters in breast cancer diagnosis and the time-honored measure of proliferative activity, the mitotic figure count, is an integral component of most combined prognostic scores. The detection of the cell cycle-specific antigens Ki-67, and the development of anti-Ki-67 antibodies, including the paraffin-reactive antibody MIB-1, have established immunohistochemical detection of cell cycle-specific antigens as a measure of proliferative activity in breast cancer diagnosis. The current study was performed to correlate mitotic figure counts with the proliferative activity as assessed by MIB-1 immunohistochemist…

Mitotic figure counts are significantly overestimated in resection specimens of invasive breast carcinomas.

2013

Several authors have demonstrated an increased number of mitotic figures in breast cancer resection specimen when compared with biopsy material. This has been ascribed to a sampling artifact where biopsies are (i) either too small to allow formal mitotic figure counting or (ii) not necessarily taken form the proliferating tumor periphery. Herein, we propose a different explanation for this phenomenon. Biopsy and resection material of 52 invasive ductal carcinomas was studied. We counted mitotic figures in 10 representative high power fields and quantified MIB-1 immunohistochemistry by visual estimation, counting and image analysis. We found that mitotic figures were elevated by more than th…

Subjective Assessment of Head and Facial Appearance in Children with Craniosynostoses after Surgical Treatment

2018

Background: Craniosynostoses are congenital defects in the construction of the skull involving premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures. Premature fusion of sutures causes characteristic skull deformation(s). This affect the structure and thus the appearance of the entire head and face. The aim of this study was to analyze parents&rsquo

Immunotherapies for thyroid eye disease

2019

Thyroid eye disease is a complex autoimmune disorder which causes substantial morbidity. It can result in orbital disfigurement, double vision, and visual loss. Consequently, it has a substantial negative effect on quality of life, mental health, and socioeconomic status. Most signs and symptoms of thyroid eye disease (TED) can be explained by the expansion of the orbital contents. Steroids are the mainstay of treatment in TED. However, recurrence may occur once steroids are withdrawn. Furthermore, in most cases, normal orbital anatomy is not restored, and skilled rehabilitative surgery is required to reduce disfigurement, double vision, and to preserve vision. Therefore, novel, causal, and…

High performance for refractive index sensors via symmetry-protected guided mode resonance.

2021

The symmetry breaking in a typical dielectric GMR-grating structure allows the coupling of the incident wave with the so-called Symmetry-Protected Modes (SPM). In this present work, the excitation conditions of such particular modes are investigated. A parametric study including the grating dimensions is carried out to exploit them for a blood refractive index sensing with higher Sensitivity (S) and Figure Of Merit (FOM). To our knowledge, the performances obtained by FDTD calculations (Q = 2.1 × 104, S = 657 nm/RIU and FOM ≃ ~9 112 RIU−1) and FMM calculations (Q = 3 × 106, S = 656 nm/RIU and FOM ≃ ~1.64 × 106 RIU−1) are the highest level reached.

Optimized factor of merit of the magneto-optical Kerr effect of ferromagnetic thin films

2000

This paper deals with the optimization of the factor of merit of the magneto-optical Kerr effect of a resonant multilayer cavity including a ferromagnetic film. This optimization is of interest in the context of optical storage technology. Using numerical simulations based on the Green's dyadic technique, we discuss a route to obtain magneto-optical multilayers with a vanishing ellipticity and factors of merit (with respect to the bulk magnetic material) larger than 3 on a broad range of wavelengths, significantly higher than the actual state of the art.
