The Istoria di sant’Ursula by Antoni d’Oliveri from Catania is among the texts published by Giuseppe Cusimano in the two inaugural volumes of the «Collezione di testi siciliani dei secoli XIV e XV». This hagiographic work is a Sicilian ottava-rima cantare dated to 1471 and is preserved in the late fifteenth-century manuscript Palermo, Biblioteca Comunale, 2 Qq B 91. This article examines the Istoria within the context of fifteen-century Sicilian literature. In particular, it shows how the attention to Saint Ursula, one of the most popular Breton saints, and her legend is not fortuitous from the point of view of both the history of piety and the mentality of medieval Sicily. The aim of this paper is to cast new light on the textual constitution of some passages of Apuleius´ Metamorphoses. Ca. 40 pieces are discussed and for the most part of them a new solution is proposed; in the other cases I argue for a solution already proposed, bur not accepted by the editors.

Glossaries were the natural storehouses of learning all through the Middle Ages. Composed in different ways, these compilations collected items from Classical, Late Antique and Medieval texts, as well as from big encyclopaedias such as Isidore’s Etymologiae. A number of large glossaries, circulating in multiple copies both in Anglo-Saxon England and on the Continent, contributed to spreading the knowledge of a number of set works and authors, from the Bible to Jerome, from Vergil to Aldhelm. These works were ransacked to pick up words used with a peculiar turn of meaning, archaisms, neologisms and loanwords (but also more common words). This paper, through the analysis of some passages by Galen, reconstructs the theory of health worked out by the Methodist school of medicine, also highlighting the considerable differences between them: from the definition of health as symmetria ton poron that Galen attributes to Asclepiades and Thessalus to the introduction of the concept of metasynkrisis by Themison, from Olympicus' theory which identifies health with eustatheia of actions to the return to the traditional concept of symmetria in Julian, one of the latest Methodists.
