Gold Nanoparticles on 3D-Printed Filters : From Waste to Catalysts

2019

Three-dimensionally printed solid but highly porous polyamide-12 (PA12) plate-like filters were used as selective adsorbents for capturing tetrachloroaurate from acidic solutions and leachates to prepare PA12–Au composite catalysts. The polyamide-adsorbed tetrachloroaurate can be readily reduced to gold nanoparticles by using sodium borohydride, ascorbic acid, hydrogen peroxide, UV light, or by heating. All reduction methods led to polyamide-anchored nanoparticles with an even size distribution and high dispersion. The particle sizes were somewhat dependent on the reduction method, but the average diameters were typically about 20 nm. Particle sizes were determined by using a combination of…

Advanced Optical Processing of Microwave Signals

2005

The authors present a review on the recent approaches proposed to implement transversal RF filters. Different tunable transversal filters consisting of wavelength tunable optical taps and those employing the tunability of dispersive devices are presented showing their high-performance characteristics. A comprehensive review of the fundamentals and a discussion on the main limitation of these structures are also included.

On the Theoretical Limits of Noise-Gain-Mismatch Tradeoff in the Design of Multi-Stage Cascaded Transistor Amplifiers

2007

The problem of evaluating the limit performances of cascaded single-ended multi-stage transistor amplifiers is addressed. In particular, a theoretically rigorous approach is proposed for the determination of a family of optimal design curves (ODC's) which express the best (maximum optimal) noise-gain tradeoff that can be achieved - at each operating frequency - when a simultaneous constraint on amplifier input VSWR is accounted for.

Permission from IEEE must be obtained for all other uses, in any current or future media, including reprinting/republishing this material for advertising or promotional purposes, creating new collective works, for resale or redistribution to servers or lists, or reuse of any copyrighted component of this work in other works. An online algorithm for missing data imputation for networks with signals defined on the edges is presented. Leveraging the prior knowledge intrinsic to real-world networks, we propose a bi-level optimization scheme that exploits the causal dependencies and the flow conservation, respe…

Search for standard model Higgs bosons produced in association with W bosons.

2007

We report on the results of a search for standard model Higgs bosons produced in association with W bosons from p-pbar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. The search uses a data sample corresponding to approximately 1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. Events consistent with the W to l-nu and H to b-bbar signature are selected by triggering on a high-pT electron or muon candidate and tagging one or two of the jet candidates as having originated from b quarks. A neural network filter rejects a fraction of tagged charm and light flavor jets, increasing the b-jet purity in the sample and thereby reducing the background to Higgs boson production. We observe no excess l-nu-b-bbar production beyond the …

Surface investigation and aluminum oxide estimation on test filters for the ATHENA X-IFU and WFI detectors

2016

The ATHENA mission provides the demanded capabilities to address the ESA science theme "Hot and Energetic Universe". Two complementary instruments are foreseen: the X-IFU (X-ray Integral Field Unit) and WFI (Wide Field Imager). Both the instruments require filters to avoid that the IR radiation heats the X-IFU cryogenic detector and to protect the WFI detector from UV photons. Previous experience on XMM filters recommends to employ bilayer membrane consisting of aluminum deposited on polyimide. In this work, we use the X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to quantify the native aluminum oxide thickness that affects the spectral properties of the filter. The estimation of the oxide thickne…

Calibration of the XRT-SOLARB flight filters at the XACT facility of INAF-OAPA

2004

The X-Ray Telescope (XRT) experiment on-board the Japanese satellite SOLAR-B (launch in 2006) aimed at providing full Sun field of view at ~ 1.5" angular resolution, will be equipped with two wheels of focal-plane filters to select spectral features of X-ray emission from the Solar corona, and a front-end filter to significantly reduce the visible light contamination. We present the results of the X-ray calibrations of the XRT flight filters performed at the X-ray Astronomy Calibration and Testing (XACT) facility of INAF-OAPA. We describe the instrumental set-up, the adopted measurement technique, and present the transmission vs. energy and position measurements.

Thermal shielding of the SIMBOL-X mirror assembly

2007

The thermal modeling of the SIMBOL-X X-ray telescope has shown that thermal shielding of both the telescope ends is one possibility to ensure temperature uniformity of the mirror and to reduce the required heating power. The design of the thermal shielding must minimize the thermal exchange in a trade off between transparency of the shields to soft X-rays and mechanical robustness. We discuss two possible designs of the thermal shielding of the mirror module and show transmission curves at X-ray wavelengths.

Status of the EPIC thin and medium filters on-board XMM-Newton after more than 10 years of operation I: laboratory measurements on back-up filters

2013

After more than ten years of operation of the EPIC camera on board the X-ray observatory XMM-Newton, we have reviewed the status of its Thin and Medium filters by performing both laboratory measurements on back-up filters, and analysis of data collected in-flight. We have selected a set of Thin and Medium back-up filters among those still available in the EPIC consortium, and have started a program to investigate their status by different laboratory measurements including: UV/VIS transmission, X-ray transmission, RAMAN IR spectroscopy, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Atomic Force Microscopy. We report the results of the measurements conducted up to now, and point out some lessons lear…
