The Challenges for Regulation and Control in an Environment of Rapid Technological Innovations
2019
Currently, amplified use of the ITC-technologies and digitalization in almost all industries has changed the value and significance of the information. The use of these new technologies offer tremendous opportunities for innovation and development, but at the same time ask for regulation and control policies to ensure appropriate storage and use of information and avoid illicit utilization of data. Moreover, use of innovative technologies such as blockchain-based technology, artificial intelligence, cloud technology, and others has complicated and disrupted the landscape of the financial services providers and their ancillary service providers such as auditors, underwriters, advisors, actua…
Multidimensional financial development, exporter behavior and export diversification
2020
Financial development shapes export sector performance because exporters need external finance and face credit constraints. Previous empirical research has relied largely on single-country studies. The Exporter Dynamics Database (EDD), which features firm-level exports from over 60 countries, reveals differences in the microstructure of the export sector across countries. In this paper, we first provide new evidence that these differences are related to cross-country variation in financial development and structure. Second, we combine the EDD and multidimensional data on financial development with a global database on export diversification. This study is the first to examine how macrolevel…

Vertical Software Industries
2009
The software industry (SWI) was born only a few decades ago, and is still relatively young compared to other industries. Its origins can be traced down to the decisions to unbundle some secondary parts of IBM computer development to independent software companies (Campbell-Kelly 2004). The software development was then considered a secondary activity serving the core business, which was at that time computer hardware manufacturing. This focus on hardware is still visible in the brand names of both the global information and communication technology (ICT) giants, such as IBM, and the major professional and scientific establishments of the field, such as the Association for Computing Machiner…

The Housing Cycle: What Role for Mortgage Market Development and Housing Finance?
2019
AbstractWe use duration analysis to assess the impact of securitization, mortgage sector liberalization and government involvement in housing finance on the length of housing booms, busts and normal times in a panel of 20 OECD countries over the period 1970Q1-2015Q4. Our results reveal that a move towards a more liberalized mortgage sector is associated with longer housing booms, while an increase in securitization is linked with shorter housing busts. They also show that the length of housing booms and busts is particularly sensitive to housing finance characteristics, but that does not seem to be the case for normal times. Additionally, government support measures do not necessarily cushi…
The Impact of Financial Arrangements and Institutional Form on Housing Prices
2009
Published version of an article from the journal: The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics. Also available on SpringerLink: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11146-009-9213-z Dwellings in housing cooperatives constitute 15% of the Norwegian housing property market. The price paid for such dwellings consists of two elements: An equity price and a share of the mutual debt held by the cooperative. The interest rate paid on the housing cooperative’s mutual debt is in Norway lower than the interest rate paid on private loans. This gives rise to an interest discount effect . We find convincing empirical support for the interest discount effect, which contributes to a higher equity price for dwel…
The 4th European Alternative Finance Benchmarking Report
2021
This year’s report is titled ‘Shifting Paradigms’ to, in part, emphasise the continued growth and development of the European Alternative Finance Industry, but also underscore that these patterns of growth can develop and change as the sector continues to develop and mature. Throughout the region, platforms have continued to grow, respond to regulation, and expand operations internationally. In some regions, model prominence has shifted, allowing for others to grow. At times, this has been a response to the development or lack of regulation, or simply a result of competing market forces. Last year’s report, ‘Expanding Horizons’, sought to exemplify the positive developments in European Alte…

The introduction of the Directive on Alternative Investment Fund Managers (AIFM Directive 2011/61/EU) in 2013 means a radical transformation of the EU regulatory landscape for the whole alternative investment fund industry. Technological Districts and the Financing of Innovation: Opportunities and Challenges for Local Banks
2015
The paper deals with the role that local banks (especially credit cooperative banks) might play in financially supporting the development of technological districts and innovative firms. After introducing the concept and features of technological districts, it focuses on the relations between districts and local banks and between the adoption of innovation and local banking. The central part is an econometric exercise aimed at measuring the weight of high value financial services over the income of a sample of Italian credit cooperative banks. Taking into account the cultural, managerial and organizational requirements of local banks, the work provides insights into how this category of ban…
