Acrometastases to the Hand: A Systematic Review

Background and Objectives: The term acrometastases (AM) refers to secondary lesions sited distally to the elbow and knee, representing 0.1% of all bony metastases. By frequency, pulmonary cancer and gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract neoplasms are the most responsible for the reported AM. Improvements in oncologic patient care favor an increase in the incidence of such rare cases. We performed a systematic review of acrometastases to the hand to provide further insight into the management of these fragile patients. Schizophrenic patients who smoke have a faster finger tapping rate than non-smokers

The increased rate of smoking in schizophrenia patients remains unexplained and may reflect attempts at self-treatment. The effect sought from smoking may be related to nicotine's stimulating action. We tested this hypothesis by examining the relationship between smoking status and finger tapping rate, a measure of central processing, in schizophrenia patients treated with atypical antipsychotics. Smokers showed significantly faster finger tapping rates than non-smokers. This was not related to clinical state, illness chronicity, medication side-effects, antipsychotic dose or plasma concentrations. In modern motor vehicles with automatic power windows, a potential hazard exists for jam events of fingers between the window glass and seal entry. This study determined entrapment forces acting on adult fingers at the subjective maximum pain threshold during entrapment in such windows. Corticokinematic coherence (CKC) is the phase coupling between limb kinematics and cortical neurophysiological signals, reflecting cortical processing of proprioceptive afference, and it is reproducible when estimated with magnetoencephalography (MEG). However, feasibility and reproducibility of CKC based on electroencephalography (EEG) is still unclear and is the primary object of the present report. Autosomal dominant and sporadic radio-ulnar synostosis.

We report on seven cases of congenital radio-ulnar synostosis (RUS). Five were found in the same family and two were sporadic. In six the synostosis was bilateral and consistently involved the proximal end of the radius and ulna. In the familial cases the anomaly was inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and was associated with a Dubois sign and relative shortness of metacarpals number 4 and 5 in two patients, and of number 2 in another patient, and of all phalanges of the 5th fingers. These observations suggest involvement of an ulnar developmental field. RUS does not seem to be rare in the Sicilian population.

Individuality of movements in music--finger and body movements during playing of the flute.

The achievement of mastery in playing a composition by means of a musical instrument typically requires numerous repetitions and corrections according to the keys and notations of the music piece. Nevertheless, differences in the interpretation of the same music piece by highly skilled musicians seem to be recognizable. The present study investigated differences within and between skilled flute players in their finger and body movements playing the same piece several times on the same and on different days. An assessment of the human nail plate pH.

<i>Purpose of Study:</i> To measure the pH of the surface of healthy nail plates. <i>Procedures:</i> The surface pH of human fingernails and big toenails was measured in vivo using a skin pH meter. The influence of washing, anatomical site (fingers/toes), side (left/right), digit (digits 1–5) and gender was determined. The pH of the nail interior was also measured. <i>Results:</i> The pH of the nail plate surface was around 5, with toenails having a significantly higher pH than fingernails. Tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome (TRPS) is characterized by craniofacial and skeletal abnormalities. Three subtypes have been described: TRPS I, caused by mutations in the TRPS1 gene on chromosome 8; TRPS II, a microdeletion syndrome affecting the TRPS1 and EXT1 genes; and TRPS III, a form with severe brachydactyly, due to short metacarpals, and severe short stature, but without exostoses. Handling forces for the use of different inhaler devices.

Abstract Age and comorbidities can impact on the success of handling an inhaler. In this pilot study, we assessed finger strength in 62 participants (aged 5–17 years [n = 20], 18–65 years [n = 22] and > 65 years [n = 20]) by using different types of inhalers with integrated sensors (Respimat®, Breezhaler®, Aerolizer®, Genuair®, Diskus®, Ellipta®, HandiHaler®, Turbohaler® and a pressurized metered-dose inhaler [Atrovent®]). Frontoparietal cortex and cerebellum contribution to the update of actual and mental motor performance during the day

AbstractActual and imagined movement speed increases from early morning until mid-afternoon. Here, we investigated the neural correlates of these daily changes. Fifteen subjects performed actual and imagined right finger opposition movement sequences at 8 am and 2 pm. Both actual and imagined movements were significantly faster at 2 pm than 8 am. In the morning, actual movements significantly activated the left primary somatosensory and motor areas, and bilaterally the cerebellum; in the afternoon activations were similar but reduced.
