Experimental Investigation and Finite Element Analysis of Dynamic Behavior and Damage of Glass/Epoxy Tubular Structures

This paper presents finite element analysis (FEA) of static and dynamic tests of thick filament wound glass/epoxy tubes. The first part involves the validation of elastic properties and identification of damage initiation and its development in dynamic tests. The results of FEA of the dynamic tests without damage appeared satisfactory. An impact model, including material property degradation, is used for damage prediction. The simulated damage is compared with that obtained experimentally. The sizes of projected and cumulated surfaces are of the same order of magnitude as in the experimental measurements.

Experimental and Numerical Analysis on FSWed Magnesium Alloy Thin Sheets Obtained Using “Pin” and “Pinless” Tool

The present investigation aims at studying the effect of different tool geometries and process parameters on FSW of thin sheets in AZ31 magnesium alloy. In particular two properly designed tools, with shoulder diameters equal to 8 and 19 mm, were used; each of them was manufactured both in pin and pinless configurations. The effect of the different tool configurations and sizes, and welding parameters on mechanical properties of FSWed joints were analyzed in detail. An Improved Thermal Lamination Model for Analysis of Heat Transfer in Composite Structures

A new thermal lamination model and its associated finite element model are presented for analysis of heat transfer in laminated composite structures. The form of the present model closely resembles that of recent zig-zag sublaminate structural laminate theories. The through-thickness distribution of temperature is assumed to vary linearly within each ply, and continuity of transverse flux at ply interfaces is enforced analytically. Thus, the number of computational degrees-offreedom (DOFs) is made independent of the number of plies in the sublaminate. Bonded joints are highly sensitive to the presence of defects and to the degradation phenomena, and this aspect represents the primary obstacle to their use in different structural engineering applications. Delamination in a bonded joint represents, in fact, one of the primary, most common and insidious causes of damage. In this article, the fatigue behaviour of self-piercing riveted joints in 2024-T6 aluminium sheets and carbon fibre composite panels is studied through experimental tests and numerical simulations. Material flow in fsw of aa7075-t6 butt joints: continuous dynamic recrystallization phenomena

In the paper the continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) phenomena occurring in the FSW of AA7075-T6 butt joints is investigated at the varying of the most relevant technological and geometrical parameters. In particular, both experiments and numerical simulations obtained utilizing a 3D Lagrangian implicit, coupled, rigid-viscoplastic model have been developed on FSW butt joints. The resulting microstructure at the core of the weldings is correlated to the material flow occurring during the FSW process.

Residual stresses in friction stir welded parts of complex geometry

Residual stresses play a key role on the mechanics underlying the fatigue crack growth propagation of welded joints. Indeed, compressive residual stresses may induce a beneficial enhancement of the fatigue life under loading condition whereas tensile residual stresses may act to increase the stress distribution at crack tip, resulting in a life-threatening condition of the welded structure.
