Global/Local FEM-BEM stress analysis of damaged aircraft structures

In this paper a Hierarchical approach for the analysis of advanced aerospace structures is presented. The proposed Global/Local model uses two kind of numerical methods. The first step of the Hierarchical procedure is performed by the Finite Element code Patran/Nastran™, using a coarse mesh to study the global structure, then the local region is analyzed by using a Boundary Element code based on the multidomain anisotropic technique. This code accurately predicts stress concentrations at crack tips with a reduction of the modeling efforts and of the computational time. Abstract The brake disk is a key part of the braking mechanism, the task of it is to slow or stop the vehicle's wheels, on the one side, while the heat produced during the process is dissipated. In this regard, the brake pads are pressed by mechanical strength on the surface of the brake disks. Tensile behaviour of anti-symmetric CFRP composite

Abstract This paper addresses the response of a 17-ply anti-symmetric carbon/epoxy composite subjected to uniaxial tensile loading. Hashin ply damage model is adopted to describe the damage behaviour of the plies, whereas damage initiation and progression of the interfaces are characterised by mixed-mode cohesive damage model. Force-displacement curves obtained numerically and experimentally show good agreement. Results show that all laminae and interfaces experience the damage except laminae with 0o fibre. In addition, damage is concentrated at the tab and central regions of the tensile specimen. Edge delamination is observed in all interfaces.
Stress Transfer within CNT Fibres: A FEA Approach

Abstract Carbon nanotube (CNT) fibres are characterized by extreme anisotropy in their structure and physical properties. These fibres have been shown to have high axial strength, but poor shear strength between carbon nanotubes; for this reason it is difficult to transfer stress uniformly acrossthe fibre cross section. Here, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to predict the stress distribution and the stress-strain curves of CNT fibres. The resultsdemonstrate that, in accordance with St. Venant principle,very considerable length-to-diameter ratios (> 10 3 ) are required to obtain a uniform stress distribution within the fibres even in the presence of low applied strain.
Dynamic analysis of prestressed cables with uncertain pretension

This paper deals with finite element dynamic analysis of prestressed cables with uncertain pretension subjected to deterministic excitations. The theoretical model addressed for cable modeling is a two-dimensional finite-strain beam theory, which allows us to eliminate any restriction on the magnitude of displacements and rotations. The dynamic problem is formulated by referring the motion to the inertial frame, which leads to a simple uncoupled quadratic form for the kinetic energy. Numerical and experimental verification of a technique for locating a fatigue crack on beams vibrating under Gaussian excitation

The stationary vibrations of a beam excited by Gaussian noise are strongly affected by the presence of a fatigue crack. Indeed, as soon as the crack arises the system response becomes non-linear due to crack breathing and a non-Gaussian behaviour is encountered. The paper presents both numerical and experimental investigations in order to assess the capability of the non-Gaussianity measures to detect crack presence and position. Monte Carlo method is applied to evaluate in time domain the higher order statistics of a cantilever beam modelled by finite elements. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a heart disease characterized by both left ventricular dilatation and left ventricular systolic dysfunction, leading to cardiac remodeling and ultimately heart failure. We aimed to investigate the effect of dilated cardiomyopathy on the pump performance and myocardial wall mechanics using patient-specific finite element analysis. The mechanical behaviour of metal V-belt drives is strongly dependent on the elastic properties of both the belt and the pulley, which influence the belt penetration into the groove and the sliding on the pulley wall. The distribution of tension and penetration is quite different from the rubber belts, which may be dealt with in the assumption of perfectly rigid pulleys.
