The influence of English film media on the Finnish language : The role of English in Finnish film magazine Episodi (2008)
2009
Nykyään median vaikutus on suuri ympäri maailmaa; kuuntelemme radiota, luemme lehtiä, katselemme televisiota ja elokuvia. Mediaa onkin tutkittu paljon viime aikoina. Tutkimuksissa on enimmäkseen tarkasteltu median hyvää tai huonoa vaikutusta sen yleisöön. Näistä tutkimuksista vain muutamassa on kuitenkaan analysoitu median käyttämää kieltä. Median keskeisen aseman lisäksi mediasta on myös tullut kielenoppimisen vaikutuksellisin väline, josta etenkin englannin kieltä opitaan. Tutkimusta kaivattaisiinkin lisää analysoimaan, miten eri mediat vaikuttavat kieliin. Tässä tutkielmassani olen pyrkinyt analysoimaan, miten englannin kielen vaikutusvaltainen elokuvateollisuus on vaikuttanut suomalaist…
The making of rallienglanti : cross-linguistic influence in Finnish speakers' pronunciation of English
2016

Varieties of agencies during working life changes
2020
The aim of this study is to shed light on the varieties of workers´ agencies in working life change situations, which is an under-researched topic in the literature of workplace learning and in working life studies. The research questions are what kinds of agencies there are to be found when workers encounter changes and how the different kinds of agencies are connected together. The understanding of agency is grounded on the subject-centered socio-cultural approach, whereas the methodological approach is based on applying life-course perspective on research material consisting of 48 working life narratives written by Finnish adults. The narratives are analyzed by abductive content analysis…
The Inclusion and Exclusion of Europe as a Discursive Strategy in Populist Political Rhetoric
2014
In recent decades global cultural flows and the movement of people within and across the borders of the EU have diversified Europe by increasing the inner pluralism of European societies. At the same time European societies have faced the rise of diverse nationalist and populist movements and political parties. These movements and parties have criticized the increasing diversity in Europe, finding faults especially in the EU integration process, current immigration policies, and the consequent development of multi- and intercultural societies. In current populist discourse, ‘borderlessness’ and the transformation of the current cultural, symbolic, and societal borders are often objected or …
Transnational Political Activities of the Swedish Finn Youth Organization
2017
This article looks at the Swedish Finn Youth Organization’s transnational political activities, and how they have developed. In the beginning, the youth organization modelled itself after its mother organization and joined the Finnish Expatriate Parliament (FEP), which made its participation in transnational practices easy. The case study of the Swedish Finn Youth Organization in Stockholm, Sweden, demonstrates that if the younger generation is given an opportunity to establish and govern their own associations, new forms of organization can be expected. The younger generation has distinguished itself from the older generation’s associations by cooperating with other minorities and taking m…
Speech Rate as and Indicator of Fluency in the Russian of Finnish Learners.
2009
This study focuses on the speech rate development of 12 Finnish university students of Russian during their 3.5-month-study abroad experience. Speech and articulation rates are measured in phonetic words per second and syllables per second in the Russian read-aloud speech of the subjects. This is done at three recordings: prior to, during and following their stay in Russia. The results are compared to their read-aloud Finnish speech. The students are also compared depending on the residence (host-family vs. dormitories) in Russia. The study shows that speech and articulation rates correlate with the evaluated fluency of the speech samples. It was found that speech rate is a better indicator…
Valuing Variability: Dynamic Usage-based Principles in the L2 Development of Four Finnish Language Learners
2020
The general aim of this study is to trace the second language (L2) development of four beginner learners of Finnish over one academic year from a dynamic usage-based perspective. Contrary to many previous studies, this study starts out from meanings, not forms. In other words, an onomasiological approach is adopted. The aim is to investigate what kind of constructions the learners use to express 1) evaluation and 2) existentiality. In line with a dynamic usage-based approach, the goal is to investigate three aspects of development: 1) the interaction between different linguistic means used to express a certain meaning and between the instruction and learning trajectories, 2) variability pat…
