Cognitive skills and Finnish language inflection
1987
Covariation of cognitive processes and mastery of inflectional forms assessed by Berko's method were studied among 2.6–4.3-year-old children. The erroneous inflections produced by the children were analysed in order to discover rules underlying their morphological test responses. The use of the different rules was guided by the children's age and cognitive skills. The effects of contextual task factors varied at different mastery levels of the morphological test. The results indicate the need for concomitant analysis of the interaction between the child's existing level of morphology, cognitive skills and contextual variables of the tasks.
Insights into the agency, positioning and development of professional Finnish language skills of international nursing students
2016
This article focuses on international students studying in an English-mediated nursing degree program in Finland. From sociocognitive and ecological perspectives, this study examines the development of the students’ professional Finnish language skills and agency during their practical training. In addition, this article explores how students are positioned as capable workers. To shed light on the students’ professional language skills, agency, and positionings, interviews with vocational teachers, head nurses, and two international nursing students are examined using narrative analysis. The findings suggest that due to their lack of Finnish language skills, international students are posit…
Language and New Nationalism in Higher Education
2020
This chapter discusses the emerging concerns for the national languages, in particular Finnish. English, previously seen in relatively positive terms in the Finnish society, begins to be construed as a threat to Finnish higher education and research, and to Finnish language at large. The chapter discusses developments since the new University Act 2009. The tension between English and the national languages develops at the same time with changes in the political climate and the rise of populist and (new) nationalist politics, both in Finland and globally. The chapter presents the recycled discourses of frozen constitutional bilingualism, economic nationalism, political elites and killer Engl…
FRONTIER RESEARCH IN TORNEDALEN
1970
Publisher Summary This chapter highlights frontier research in Tornedalen. In view of the general alignment of the research carried on by ethnologists, it is a matter of course that a concentration of interest to regions with administrative boundaries of such a marked character as, for example, national frontiers may often give a sharper relief to the problems considered. The interest in questions around such boundaries here leads to inter-Nordic collaboration. This is what has happened in Tornedalen, the frontier zone between Finland and Sweden. The problems around a frontier dividing a coherent settled area make themselves felt in all sectors of human community life, and, they cannot be i…
The associations among fundamental movement skills, self-reported physical activity and academic performance during junior high school in Finland.
2015
The purpose of this study was to analyse the longitudinal associations between (1) fundamental movement skills (FMSs) and academic performance, and (2) self-reported physical activity and academic performance through junior high school in Finland. The participants of the study were 325 Finnish students (162 girls and 163 boys), who were 13 years old at the beginning of the study at Grade 7. Students performed three FMS tests and responded to a self-reported physical activity questionnaire at Grades 7 and 8. Marks in Finnish language, mathematics and history from Grades 7, 8 and 9 were collected. Structural equation modelling with multigroup method demonstrated that in the boys' group, a cor…
The role of parental expectations and students' motivational profiles for educational aspirations
2016
Abstract The present study examined the stability and change of students' motivational profiles from Grade 7 (Time 1) to Grade 9 (Time 2), using task values and self-concepts of ability in mathematics, Finnish language, and arts as indicator variables. The study also examined the effects of students' (Grade 7: N = 231; Grade 9: N = 237) motivational profiles and of their parents' educational expectations at Grade 7 on their short- and long-term educational plans at Grade 9, controlling for gender and academic achievement. The latent profile analysis identified four motivational profiles: (1) low motivation group; (2) high motivation group; (3) math-motivated group; (4) practical group, wh…
Kielitutkinto ohjaa opetusta ja kannustaa puhumaan
2017
The Use of Partitive Plural Predicatives by Learners of Finnish from Related and Non-related L1 Backgrounds: The same side of a slightly different co…
2014
The use of the partitive case, a typical case characterizing Finnic languages, remains a constant struggle for learners of Finnish as a foreign language. This paper reports on a study on the (under)use of partitive plural predicatives in the writings of Estonian, German and Dutch learners of Finnish as a foreign language. The overall aim of the study reported on in this paper was to identify and address similarities and differences between the use of partitive plural predicatives by learners of Finnish as a foreign language from related and non-related L1 backgrounds (Estonian vs. German/Dutch). Research materials (Estonian learner corpus 82,749 words; German learner corpus 60,490 words; Du…
Students and teachers opinions about English teaching in Finnish polytechnics
2009
Is Sauna Bathing Protective of Sudden Cardiac Death? A Review of the Evidence
2019
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a global public health burden accounting for 15–20% of all deaths. Though established atherosclerotic risk factors explain a large proportion of the risk of SCD, these factors are often absent in a large proportion of SCD victims and the pathogenesis of SCD is still not fully established. It therefore appears that additional factors may be involved. Sauna bathing is a traditional Finnish activity that is mainly used for the purposes of relaxation and pleasure. Beyond its use for these purposes, sauna bathing has been linked with several health benefits. Emerging evidence suggests that sauna bathing is associated with reduced risk of adverse cardiovascular (CV) …
