Drivers of Firm Performance: Exploring Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches

Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to identify the drivers of firm performance by exploring both quantitative indicators - based on accounting profitability, shareholder value and economic value – and qualitative approach – based on balanced scorecard and triple bottom line. A literature review will be provided in order to obtain an optimum mix of quantitative and qualitative drivers for firm performance, on one hand, and a case study will be conducted for emphasizing the importance of both approaches, on the other hand.

On the Returns to Invention within Firms: Evidence from Finland

International audience; In this paper we merge individual income data, firm-level data, patenting data, and IQ data in Finland over the period 1988–2012 to analyze the returns to invention for inventors and their coworkers or stakeholders within the same firm. We find that: (i) inventors collect only 8 percent of the total private return from invention; (ii) entrepreneurs get over 44 percent of the total gains; (iii) bluecollar workers get about 26 percent of the gains and the rest goes to white-collar workers. Moreover, entrepreneurs start with significant negative returns prior to the patent application, but their returns subsequently become highly positive.

In spite of the importance of knowledge assets, few empirical studies have examined how knowledge is generated in organizations and the effect of knowledge management on learning-based competencies. This research studies the effect of introducing knowledge management programs in the development of learning-based distinctive competencies as these factors relate to a firm¿s performance. The effect of language use on the financial performance of microfinance banks: Evidence from cross-border activities in 74 countries

Abstract This multi-year study examines the relationship between financial performance and language use, observing 405 partnerships between microfinance banks and their international financial partners in 74 countries. Drawing on language research in international business, we find that microfinance banks based in English-speaking, French-speaking, and Spanish-speaking countries have higher performance. Furthermore, the linguistic distance between the home country of a microfinance bank and the home country of its international partner(s) is negatively related to its financial performance. Open Innovation practices on firm performance: evidences from biotech industry

The research presented in this paper explores the effect of Open Innovation (OI) on firm performance in the biotech-pharma industry sector. Specifically, although existing researches on OI effectiveness have separately investigated the effect of OI practices on innovation and financial performance, this study evaluates the concurrent effect of all those practices on both such performance dimensions in a single framework. We claim the importance for a manager to explore concurrently the influence of specific OI practices both on innovation and economic-financial performance. We empirically test our framework on a sample of 120 companies listed on NASDAQ Biotechnology Index.
