Evaluating the effects of forest tree species on rill detachment capacity in a semi-arid environment

2021

Abstract The beneficial effects of plant roots in decreasing soil detachment in forest ecosystems exposed to rill erosion are well known. However, these effects vary largely between different plant species. There has been lots of research into the relationship between root-soil systems and rill erodibility with a particular focus on grass species. Conversely, fewer studies are available for tree species, especially in forests of semi-arid or arid environments. Greater knowledge is therefore needed to identify the most effective tree species against rill erosion in these ecosystems, where water availability is the limiting factor for vegetation growth and afforestation is often the only solu…

Measuring Field Rill Erodibility by a Simplified Method

2015

Many process-oriented erosion prediction models reproduce rill erosion as affected by site-specific parameters, as for example, rill erodibility, and thus, their practical application requires the measurement of these parameters or their estimate. The aim of this paper was establishing a method for indirectly measuring field rill erodibility. A simple mathematical approach based on a known soil detachment equation and accounting for the rill erosion dynamic process is applied. Field measurements carried out for seven natural rainfall events occurring at the plots of the Sparacia experimental station, southern Italy, are used for indirectly measuring the rill erodibility of the investigated …

The role of the transcription factor hsf1 in zebrafish erythropoiesis

2020

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are reported to play an important role in erythropoiesis. The expression of HSP genes is mainly controlled by Heat shock factor 1 (HSF1), a highly conserved transcription factor. So far, a detailed understanding of the function of HSF1 in erythropoiesis remains uncharacterized. This study has employed zebrafish as a relevant model to investigate the role of Hsf1 during embryonic erythropoiesis. We established hsf1-disrupted zebrafish lines using the CRISPR/Cas9 technology and performed phenotypic analyses throughout embryogenesis. We found that Hsf1 deficient embryos had a decreased number of primitive erythrocytes, while erythrocyte number in adults was unchanged…

Stress reactivity elicits a tissue-specific reduction in telomere length in aging zebrafish (Danio rerio)

2020

ABSTRACTTelomere length reflects cellular ageing. Increased telomere shortening in leukocytes is associated with a range of neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, the onset and progression of which may be mediated by behavioural traits such as anxiety and stress reactivity. However, the effects of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis stress response are shown to be tissue specific. As such, leukocyte telomere length may not give an accurate measure of the relationship between stress-reactivity and telomere length in disease relevant tissues. To test the hypothesis that stress-reactivity contributes to age-related telomere shortening in a tissue specific manner, we examined the co…

The economic impact of the EFF on the competitiveness of Sicilian fish companies

2017

The measure 2.3 of the European Fisheries Fund, in Sicily, claimed investments of fish companies in production capacity expansion and modernization of fish processing. Have these investments been effective in supporting the competitiveness of these companies and have they influenced the economic sustainability of the regional seafood chain? Proposed analysis contributes to this assessment through an exploratory survey and a review of the changes in their business performance.

The essay addresses the issue of compatibility of international cooperation activities carried out by private entities, such as the District of Fishing and Blue Growth of Mazara del Vallo, with the Community regulatory framework on fishin…

Soil biodiversity monitoring in Europe : ongoing activities and challenges

2009

International audience; The increasing interest in soil biodiversity and its protection includes both the biodiversity conservation issues and the mostly unknown economic and ecological values of services provided by soil biodiversity. Inventory and monitoring are necessary tools for the achievement of an adequate level of knowledge regarding soil biodiversity status and for the detection of biodiversity hot spots as well as areas where current levels of biodiversity are under threat of decline. In this paper the main tools and methodological approaches for soil biodiversity measurement are presented. Technical aspects related to the inventory and monitoring activities at a large spatial sc…

Depuration of geosmin- and 2-methylisoborneol-induced off-flavors in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) farmed European whitefish

2019

European whitefish Coregonus lavaretus has increasingly become an important species for aquatic food production, especially in the Nordic countries. Whitefish is produced in traditional cage and pond operations, and in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) in which, unfortunately, off-flavors and odors, mostly caused by geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB), can accumulate in fish flesh from the circulating water. GSM and MIB have very low human sensory detection limits and, therefore, often disliked by consumers even at low concentrations. In this study, concentrations of GSM and MIB in RAS farmed European whitefish were studied by an analytical method based on headspace solid phase …

Henneguya zschokkei (Myxozoa) infection in cultured whitefish : Age-dependence, seasonality and distribution within host

2017

Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) is an important species for European fisheries and aquaculture. Recently, the myxosporean Henneguya zschokkei has been observed to infect the muscles of whitefish in fish farms. Plasmodia of H. zschokkei prevent marketing of the fillet and cause economic losses. The factors associated with occurrence of the parasite in fish farms have not been investigated previously. We studied age-dependence, seasonality, and within-host distribution of H. zschokkei plasmodia in farmed whitefish by examining a total of 1599 fish. Distribution of plasmodia within the fish was not uniform. When the fillet was divided into parts, the number of plasmodia was positively correlat…

Mixed origin of juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) along the Swedish west coast

2022

AbstractCryptic population structure in exploited fish species poses a major challenge for fisheries management. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is a species in which the presence of sympatric ecotypes has been known for a long time, for instance off the coast of Northern Norway. More recently, two sympatric ecotypes of cod have also been documented in the Skagerrak and Kattegat; one ecotype is of an apparent offshore origin and undertakes spawning migrations to the North Sea, and the other is resident at the coast throughout its life. However, their relative contributions of juveniles to the Swedish west coast remain poorly understood. The lack of adult cod along the Skagerrak and Kattegat coa…
