Abstract The fish freshness was evaluated using machine vision technique through color changes of eyes and gills of farmed and wild gilthead sea bream ( Sparus aurata ), being employed lightness ( L * ), redness ( a * ), yellowness ( b * ), chroma ( c * ), and total color difference (Δ E ) parameters during fish ice storage. A digital color imaging system, calibrated to provide accurate CIELAB color measurements, was employed to record the visual characteristics of eyes and gills. Looking for skin and gill parasites as biological tags for Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus)

Skin and gill parasites found in juvenile Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) caught in the Bay of Biscay, northeast Atlantic, were examined with the aim of finding biological tags. The degree of infection of different microhabitats was analyzed and the annual prevalence by species of parasite obtained. Of the specimens examined, 98% had parasites, and the gills were by far the most infected microhabitat, followed by the skin and the pectoral fin. Within the gill cavity, parasites were most commonly found in the afferent margins of the primary lamellae. Three species of Copepoda were identified, two species of Monogenea, and eleven Digenea. Fishing can have profound impacts on the ecology and evolution of marine populations. Understanding population-level changes ultimately depends on knowledge about individual survival and how it varies in time and space. We used acoustic tags and a network of receivers to monitor individual behaviour and fate of European lobster (Homarus gammarus) exposed to commercial and recreational trap fisheries on the Norwegian Skagerrak coast. According to James (1984) there are few data available about the status and the distribution of the Storm Petrel in the Mediterranean Sea. Abstract. The relationship between absence of functional swim-bladder, calculosis and larval mortality of hatchery-reared sea bream, Sparus aurata L., was observed. There was a temporal variation in the main causes of mortality, i.e. not inflated swim-bladder appears to be the main cause up to the 47th day, and the presence of calculi around the 55th day. Histological sections, semi-quantitative analysis and scanner electron microscope photographs were carried out.

We carried out enclosure experiments to assess the potential deleterious effects of the alien species common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.), mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrookii Gir.), and pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus L.) on water quality and food web in a severely degraded floodplain wetland, the Spanish National Park Las Tablas de Daimiel. Fish communities of five shallow Spanish Mediterranean lakes were studied and stomach content analysed to determine the foraging pattern of each species and the influence on the lake food web. Lakes ranged from 0.5 to 2300 ha with less than 3 m mean depth, while the trophic state varied from mesotrophy to hypertrophy. We fished during summer 2000 and 2001, and for one lake also during spring 2002. Almost no piscivores species were recorded and in general omnivorous species dominated independently of lake trophic state. Fish dietary differences were found among lakes and prey availabilities.
