Effects of ultraviolet light on immune parameters of the roach
2000
Ultraviolet B radiation penetrates into water and can affect fish health and the immune system, as is the case with mammals. Teleost fish, the roach, were exposed to UVB irradiation in aquariums and a panel of immune parameters was determined. In addition to altered blood picture and respiratory burst by blood leukocytes, changes were noted also in major lymphatic organs. Respiratory burst and natural cytotoxicity activity of head kidney granulocytes and mitogen-activated proliferation of splenic lymphocytes were suppressed. Although mostly transitory, some parameters remained suppressed for the following 2 weeks. Ultraviolet A radiation had only minor effects. The stress induced by UVB may…
Allochthony, fatty acid and mercury trends in muscle of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) along boreal environmental gradients
2022
Environmental change, including joint effects of increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total phosphorus (TP) in boreal northern lakes could potentially affects food web energy sources and the biochemical composition of organisms. These environmental stressors are enhanced by anthropogenic land-use and can decrease the quality of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in seston and zooplankton, and therefore, possibly cascading up to fish. In contrast, the content of mercury in fish increases with lake browning potentially amplified by intensive forestry practises. However, there is little evidence on how these environmental stressors simultaneously impact beneficial omega-3 fatty acid …
Evolution, adaptation and immune functions of fish F-type lectins. The novelty of FBL from Trematomus bernacchii (Boulenger, 1902)
2020
Lectins are a protein family, present in almost all living organisms and involved in different biological pathways, such as immune responses. The Fucose Binding Lectin (FBL), constitute the latest lectin family identified and characterized in fishes. The FBL family is constituted by a large number of proteins exhibiting multiples of the F-type motif, either tandemly arrayed or in mosaic combinations with other domains. In an early step a FBL has been isolated and characterized from serum of the Antarctic fish Trematomus bernacchii by affinity chromatography on fucose-agarose column. A clear Bacterial agglutinating activity (BA) towards different bacteria strains (Escherichia coli, Kokuria r…
Determining seasonality of mussel collection from an early historic Inuit site, Labrador, Canada: Comparing thin-sections with high-resolution stable…
2018
International audience; Stable oxygen isotope (delta O-18) analysis of mussels (Mytilus sp.) from a 16th to mid-18th century Inuit site in southern Labrador, Canada, indicates multiple seasons of shellfish collection, and by proxy, multiple seasons of site occupation. High-resolution delta O-18 sampling of shell permits a precise season of mussel collection since the temperature and freshwater signal of the local water is retained in the shell. Live-collected specimens of Mytilus sp. obtained from Labrador, were analyzed for stable oxygen isotopes and for growth patterns. These data were used to interpret results from the archaeological shells. Growth pattern analysis was conducted to test …
Data from: “A cleaner break”: genetic divergence between geographic groups and sympatric phenotypes revealed in ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta)
2021
Capture and long-distance translocation of cleaner fish to control lice infestations on marine salmonid farms has the potential to influence wild populations via overexploitation in source regions, and introgression in recipient regions. Knowledge of population genetic structure is therefore required. We studied the genetics of ballan wrasse, a phenotypically diverse and extensively used cleaner fish, from 18 locations in Norway and Sweden, and from Galicia, Spain. We detected two very distinct genetic groups in Scandinavia, northwest and southeast. These groups were split by a stretch of sandy beaches in southwest Norway, representing a habitat discontinuity for this rocky shore associated…
The Evaluation Of The Influence Of Land Surface Temperature In Energy Balance Estimated By S-Sebi Model
2020
Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the least understood components of the hydrological cycle. Its application is varied, from agricultural, ecological and hydrological monitoring, to control of the evolution of climate change. The goal of this work was to analyze the influence that uncertainties in the estimate of Land Surface Temperature (LST) can cause on ET estimates by S-SEBI model in Pampa Biome area. The results indicate that the daily evapotranspiration is higher when the pixel LST is lower, which also shows the influence of land use on the variability of ET. They also demonstrated the importance of LST's accuracy in the selection of the driest and wettest pixels in applying S-SEBI mo…
The (Evolving) vineyard’s age structure in the valencian community, Spain. A new demographic approach for rural development and landscape analysis
2019
Vineyards have assumed a key role as rural landmarks in recent decades. Investigating vineyard dynamics and contexts may reveal various economic, cultural, and environmental aspects of rural landscapes, which can be linked to land-use changes and major soil degradation processes, including soil erosion. As a contribution to rural landscape studies, the purpose of this work is to investigate the spatial distribution of vineyard plots in the Valencian community, located in the eastern area of the Iberian Peninsula, focusing on the final product, the type of vineyard and how long each vineyard has been settled over time. The work provides a comprehensive analysis of a wine-growing landscape, c…
Interspecific associations among larval helminths in fish
2001
Various processes can generate associations between the larvae of different helminth species in their fish intermediate or paratenic host. We investigated the pairwise associations among larval helminth species in eight different fish populations, using two different coefficients of associations, in order to determine in what situations they are strongest. All helminth species included use the fish studied as either their second intermediate host or their paratenic host, and are acquired by the fish when it ingests an infected first intermediate host. The intensity of infection correlated positively with fish length for most helminth species. Pairs of species which both exhibited positive c…
New data on the early development of Hysterothylacium aduncum (Nematoda, Anisakidae).
1998
This note reports on incidental observations of the early development of the third-stage larvae of Hysterothylacium aduncum from gadid fishes. Gravid H. aduncum females were collected from Pollachius virens, Pollachius pollachius. Gadus morhua, and Molva molva in Norwegian waters. The eggs were incubated at 20 per thousand salinity and 5 C. Spontaneous hatching of third-stage larvae was observed 10-25 days after egg deposition. These larvae were long lived and could infect Acartia tonsa copepods, the infections being maintained for up to 34 days. The morphology of the third-stage larvae in the copepods and some traits of the life cycle were similar to those reported in previous studies. How…
Toxicity of 3,4-dichloroaniline to perch (Perca fluviatilis) in acute and early life stage exposures
1993
Abstract The toxitity of 3,4-dichloroaniline to perch was investigated in order to compare the sensitivity of crucial life stages with common test fish like zebrafish. Although in the acute toxicity test perch were more sensitive by a factor of five, larval sensitivity was in the same range in both species as well as in other egg-laying species. In spite of different water temperature and size, the zebrafish is a good model to predict early life stage toxicity of 3,4-DCA to the compared European freshwater species. Perch larvae are not suited for early life stage tests, as they are sensible towards experimental conditions and perform early cannibalism.
