Comparative diazinon toxicity in guppy and zebra fish: Different role of oxidative metabolism
1993
Guppies pretreated with 1.1 μmol/L diazinon (0.5 times the LC50 with the guppy) for 7 d were less susceptible to the toxicity of the compound. The LC50 in these fish was about five times higher than that in nonpretreated animals. The lethal body burden and the slope of the concentration-response curve of diazinon in pretreated guppies were similar to those in zebra fish. The 7-d pretreatment of zebra fish with 12 μmol/L diazinon (0.5 times the LC50 with the zebra fish) did not affect the susceptibility of this species to diazinon. The pretreatment of guppies resulted in a strong inhibition of the formation of diazoxon and pyrimidinol during incubations of diazinon with the hepatic postmitoc…
Morphological characterisation of soil structure in tilled fields: from a diagnosis method to the modelling of structural changes over time
2004
Characterisation of soit structure within the tilled layer of cultivated fields is crucial because the importance of this soil characteristic on the biological, chemical and physical properties of the soil and its repercussions on water cycle, root growth and functioning. We present in this paper a method for field characterisation of soil structure. This method, practised since the 1970s, was designed for field diagnosis of the effects of cropping systems on soil structure. It is based on a stratification of the observation face of a pit dug perpendicular to the direction of tillage and traffic: spatial compartments are distinguished, according to the nature of the mechanical stresses they…
Phylogenomics of species from four genera of New World monkeys by flow sorting and reciprocal chromosome painting
2007
Abstract Background The taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships of New World monkeys (Platyrrhini) are difficult to distinguish on the basis of morphology and because diagnostic fossils are rare. Recently, molecular data have led to a radical revision of the traditional taxonomy and phylogeny of these primates. Here we examine new hypotheses of platyrrhine evolutionary relationships by reciprocal chromosome painting after chromosome flow sorting of species belonging to four genera of platyrrhines included in the Cebidae family: Callithrix argentata (silvered-marmoset), Cebuella pygmaea (pygmy marmoset), Callimico goeldii (Goeldi's marmoset) and Saimiri sciureus (squirrel monkey). This is t…
An siRNA-based functional genomics screen for the identification of regulators of ciliogenesis and ciliopathy genes
2015
Item does not contain fulltext Defects in primary cilium biogenesis underlie the ciliopathies, a growing group of genetic disorders. We describe a whole-genome siRNA-based reverse genetics screen for defects in biogenesis and/or maintenance of the primary cilium, obtaining a global resource. We identify 112 candidate ciliogenesis and ciliopathy genes, including 44 components of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, 12 G-protein-coupled receptors, and 3 pre-mRNA processing factors (PRPF6, PRPF8 and PRPF31) mutated in autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa. The PRPFs localize to the connecting cilium, and PRPF8- and PRPF31-mutated cells have ciliary defects. Combining the screen with exome sequen…
Thermal evolution of Tethyan surface waters during the Middle-Late Jurassic: Evidence from δ18O values of marine fish teeth
2003
[1] Oxygen isotope compositions of phosphate from vertebrate tooth enamel were measured to determine the evolution of tropical sea surface ( 0‰ owing to limited growth of continental ice during the early middle Oxfordian. The resulting sea level fall is estimated to be at least 50 m and is compatible with a global regression stage. The middle Oxfordian thermal minimum is followed by a new warming stage of 3–4°C from the middle to the late Oxfordian.
Identification of lipophilic pollutants discharged from a Finnish pulp and paper mill.
1998
Lipophilic organic compounds originating from kraft pulping and papermaking were identified by straight gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses. Samples analyzed included a primary clarifier effluent (PE) and a secondary clarifier effluent (SE) from the activated sludge treatment plant of a Finnish ECF-bleached (Elementally Chlorine Free) kraft pulp and paper mill. Liquid-liquid extraction composition of PE was compared with solid phase extraction (SPE) and dialysis of a semipermeable membrane device (SPMD) exposed to PE. Dichloromethane extracts of particulate material isolated from PE, sludges from both the primary and secondary clarifier, a sediment collected in the vicinit…
Fish community responses to pulp and paper mill effluents at the southern Lake Saimaa, Finland.
2002
Abstract The fish community in sublittoral and profundal waters, at stony shores, and densities of vendace larvae were studied in the southern Lake Saimaa, Finland. The objective was to investigate the possible recovery of fish populations after modernizations at the pulp and paper mills discharging into the lake. Sublittoral and profundal waters were studied by gill net trial fishings, stony shores by electrofishing, and vendace larvae by beach seine. The research area was divided in a polluted (0.5–4.0% effluent), an intermediate (0.1–0.5%) and a ‘clean’ reference area. The fish community in sublittoral and profundal waters in the lake was dominated (>60%) by perch and roach. Relative abu…
The capacity of liver microsomes to form benzo[a]pyrene-diolepoxide-DNA adducts and induction of cytochrome P450 1A in feral fish exposed to pulp mil…
1996
An investigation was made of cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) induction, determined by the activity of EROD (7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase), and formation of benzo[a]pyrene-diolepoxide-DNA (BPDE-DNA) adducts, measured by synchronous fluorescence spectrophotometry, in liver microsomes of perch (Perca fluviatilis), bream (Abramis brama), and roach (Rutilus rutilus). Fish were collected from the southern part of Lake Saimaa (Finland), an area polluted by effluents from the pulp and paper industry. In addition, two conjugation enzymes (UDP-glucuronosyltransferase and glutathione S-transferase) were determined. Overall, when compared to an upstream reference, EROD activity was higher in fish at waters…
Effect of pulp and paper mill effluent (BKME) on physiological parameters of roach (Rutilus rutilus) infected by the digenean Rhipidocotyle fennica.
2002
Physiological parameters were measured after experimental infection of roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) with Rhipidocotyle fennica Gibson, Valtonen et Taskinen, 1992 (Digenea) cercariae. The fish were caught from two lakes: a eutrophic bleached kraft mill effluent (BKME)-contaminated lake and an oligotrophic unpolluted lake. The intensity of infection was followed up to 10 days post infection (p.i.) and physiological parameters indicating non-specific stress responses and the condition of fish were examined simultaneously. The mean abundance, the number of parasites per fish, of R. fennica was significantly higher in the fish from the contaminated water during the first two days p.i., probably re…
