Immunological and pathological status of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) under different long-term feeding regimes

The possible influence of the feeding regime (FR) on the immune system and pathological status of gilthead sea bream was studied. Two growth trials were performed starting at different seasons (trial 1 = March; trial 2 = June) under controlled experimental conditions. In both trials, FR-1 groups received a restricted amount of food, whereas FR-2 groups were fed to visual satiety. The pathology study included parasitological and bacteriological examination, and the immunological traits analysed were respiratory burst activity of head kidney leucocytes, serum lysozyme and alternative pathway complement activity (ACH50). From 1998 to 2010, monitoring was performed on the catch and fishing effort of Melicerctus kerathurus by the artisanal fleet based at the port at Marinella di Selinunte which operates in the wide gulf between Capo San Marco and Capo Granitola along the southwestern coast of Sicily. In 2004, a repopulation experiment with Melicerctus kerathurus post-larvae raised in an aquaculture plant from wild indigenous breeders was carried out in this area. The catch and cpue, in both number of specimens and in yield, were practically doubled in 2005. From 2006, catch and cpue returned to levels observed in the years prior to 2005. Spectral sensitivity was measured under different adaptation levels using a behavioral training technique in which the fish had to discriminate between a dark test field and a test field illuminated with monochromatic light. Depending on which of the two test fields was used as training test field, two functions were obtained which differ (1) in absolute sensitivity and (2) in shape. When trained on the dark test field, the fish seems to discriminate on the basis of a "color" cue, but it uses a "brightness" cue when trained on the illuminated test field. Retropharyngeal abscess from fishbone in adult immunocompetent host presenting as acute thyroiditis

Retropharyngeal abscesses (RPA) are rare in adults. We report a case of a healthy adult with RPA presenting with clinical symptoms of acute thyroiditis. A 37-yr-old female presented with a painful mass in the anterior region of the neck, sore throat, mild fever and dysphagy for liquids and solids. Neck emergency US dis-closed normal thyroid ventrally displaced by a huge retropharyngeal hypoechoic mass. Direct laryngoscopy revealed erythema of the posterior pharyngeal wall with bulges (8 cm) preventing the correct visualization of the glottic plane. Through their leaf litter and throughfall water, tree species can have a pronounced influence on soil chemistry. However, there is little knowledge of species-specific root effects on greenhouse gas fluxes between forest soils and the atmosphere. By growing saplings of beech (Fagus sylvatica) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior) in monoculture or mixture at defined atmospheric and soil conditions in rhizotrons, we tested four hypotheses related to potential root-induced tree species effects on the uptake of CH4 and the emission of N2O and CO2 from the soil. ARISA fingerprints could differ from one plant to the next as well as from one sampling to the next.
