High Yields of Shrimp Oil Rich in Omega-3 and Natural Astaxanthin from Shrimp Waste

2020

A valued marine oil rich in omega-3 lipids and natural astaxanthin is obtained with remarkably high yield (up to S wt %) extending to pink shrimp waste (head and carapace) using the approach to extract fish oil from fish processing byproducts using D-limonene. Biobased limonene is an excellent solvent for both unsaturated lipids and astaxanthin-based carotenoids preventing oxidative degradation during the extraction cycle including solvent separation at 85 degrees C. Explaining the deep red color of the shrimp oil obtained, computational simulation suggests that D-limonene is also a good solvent for natural astaxanthin abundant in shrimp.

A pattern recognition approach to identify biological clusters acquired by acoustic multi-beam in Kongsfjorden

2022

The Svalbardsis one of the most intensively studied marine regions in the Artic; here the composition and distribution of marine assemblages are changing under the effect of global change, and marine communities are monitored in order to understand the long-term effects on marine biodiversity. In the present work, acoustic data collected in the Kongsfjorden using multi-beam technology was analyzed to develop a methodology for identifying and classifying 3D acoustic patterns related to fish aggregations. In particular, morphological, energetic and depth features were taken into account to develop a multi-variate classification procedure allowing to discriminate fish species. The results obta…

The Political Ecology of Small-scale and Artisanal Fisheries: Enclosures, Property and Conservation

2022

This article concentrates on some aspects of the political ecology of a specific portion of marine resource users, holders, and guardians – small-scale and artisanal fisheries (SSFs) – with the aim of exploring some of the struggles they are currently facing and how they are positioned vis à vis some of the solutions proposed to improve marine resources and ecosystems management and conservation. In particular, the article looks at the expansion of states’ sovereignty and private property to reduce unsustainable catches and at the establishment of marine and coastal protected areas as instruments that often fall short of sufficiently considering and respecting the livelihoods, culture, and …

The tuna-fishermen's work songs began to be documented at the end of the 19th century in the ethnografic literature. Written sources were later joined by audio recordings and films at the time of modern ethnomusicological research. The text outlines the historical sequence …

Una indagine etnomusicologica fra Sciacca e Granitola

2021

In July 1954 Alan Lomax and Diego Carpitella carried out a pioneering field research on Sicilian traditional music. They began the journey from Sciacca, recording the tuna-fishermen's work songs. This is the only precious documentation of the fishermen's voices in this tonnara that shortly after stopped working.

IRSp53 shapes the plasma membrane and controls polarized transport at the nascent lumen during epithelial morphogenesis

2019

AbstractEstablishment of apical–basal cell polarity is necessary for generation of luminal and tubular structures during epithelial morphogenesis. Molecules acting at the membrane/ actin interface are expected to be crucial in governing these processes. Here, we show that the I-BAR-containing IRSp53 protein is restricted to the luminal side of epithelial cells of various glandular organs, and is specifically enriched in renal tubules in human, mice, and zebrafish. Using three-dimensional cultures of renal MDCK and intestinal Caco-2 cysts, we show that IRSp53 is recruited early after the first cell division along the forming apical lumen, and is essential for formation of a single lumen and …

Protocols for the health surveillance | Protocolli per la sorveglianza sanitaria dei lavoratori della pesca

2013

Obiettivo.
