Efficiency Bounds for Product Designs in Linear Models
1999
We provide lower efficiency bounds for the best product design for an additive multifactor linear model. The A-optimality criterion is used to demonstrate that out bounds are better than the conventional bounds. Applications to other criteria, such as IMSE (integrated mean squared error) criterion are also indicated. In all the cases, the best product design appears to perform better when there are more levels in each factor but decreases when more factors are included. Explicit efficiency formulas for non-additive models are also constructed.
Nearly exact sample size calculation for powerful non-randomized tests for differences between binomial proportions
2015
In the case of two independent samples, it turns out that among the procedures taken in consideration, BOSCHLOO'S technique of raising the nominal level in the standard conditional test as far as admissible performs best in terms of power against almost all alternatives. The computational burden entailed in exact sample size calculation is comparatively modest for both the uniformly most powerful unbiased randomized and the conservative non-randomized version of the exact Fisher-type test. Computing these values yields a pair of bounds enclosing the exact sample size required for the Boschloo test, and it seems reasonable to replace the exact value with the middle of the corresponding inter…
On quantumness in multi-parameter quantum estimation
2019
In this article we derive a measure of quantumness in quantum multi-parameter estimation problems. We can show that the ratio between the mean Uhlmann Curvature and the Fisher Information provides a figure of merit which estimates the amount of incompatibility arising from the quantum nature of the underlying physical system. This ratio accounts for the discrepancy between the attainable precision in the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters and the precision predicted by the Cram\'er-Rao bound. As a testbed for this concept, we consider a quantum many-body system in thermal equilibrium, and explore the quantum compatibility of the model across its phase diagram.
Infant mortality across species. A global probe of congenital abnormalities
2019
Infant mortality, by which we understand the postnatal stage during which mortality is declining, is a manifestation and embodiment of congenital abnormalities. Severe defects will translate into death occurring shortly after birth whereas slighter anomalies may contribute to death much later, possibly only in adult age. While for many species birth defects would be nearly impossible to identify, infant mortality provides a convenient global assessment. In the present paper we examine a broad range of species from mammals to fish to gastropods to insects. One of the objectives of our comparative analysis is to test a conjecture suggested by reliability engineering according to which the fre…
Spatial Mark-Recapture Method in the Estimation of Crayfish Population Size
1995
The mark-recapture method is considered for estimation of population size of slowly moving animals like crayfish. The Petersen type estimator for closed population is generalized for situations where recaptures are spatially dependent between the capture sites, and its variance approximation is derived using point processes as models for the population. The method of quadratic forms is suggested to be used as variance estimator. Finally, a trapping design is proposed where onc trap at recapture is replaced by four adjacent traps. A simulation experiment is performed to explain the robusticity of the new trapping design against movements of animals.
Methomyl analogues with increased biological activity towards F7T maize mitochondria
1987
Abstract Methomyl analogues were synthesized by substituting alkyl moieties (C 2 -C 21 ) in the place of the carbamic methyl. They were assayed on mitochondria isolated from male sterile (F 7 T) and male fertile (F 7 N) maize. They had no action on F 7 N mitochondria. The heptadecyl (C 17 ) and heneicosanyl (C 21 ) derivatives had no conspicuous effect on F 7 T mitochondria. By contrast, the ethyl, propyl, butyl, nonyl, tridecyl (C 13 ) and pentadecyl (C 15 ) derivatives had the same type of activity as Methomyl on F 7 T mitochondria, namely stimulation of NADH oxidation and inhibition of malate oxidation. Moreover, the concentration at which they were maximally effective decreased from 10 …
Density and biomass of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) in five Finnish lakes
2005
Abstract Hydro-acoustic stock assessment and exploratory sampling with small mesh-sized trawls and seines have sometimes suggested that the importance of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) in pelagic fish communities might be greater than sampling from commercial fishery and gillnetting indicate. We studied the proportion of smelt in the total fish density (fish ha−1) and biomass (kg ha−1) of pelagic fish with echo sounding and trawling in five southern boreal lakes. Fish density varied between 460 and 2000 fish ha−1 in the study lakes. Smelt and vendace (Coregonus albula) accounted for more than 95% of the exploratory trawl-catches. The total fish biomass in the study areas varied between 3 and 13 …

Soil REE patterns as tracers of the emplacement of metal-rich anthropogenic materials. A case study in Moa (Cuba)
2019
Purpose: Are rare earth element (REE) patterns employable as tracers in human interventions of bulk soil disturbances, when high concentrations of metals are involved in the in situ soil disturbance? In terms of bulk soil disturbance, it is difficult to distinguish between bulk soil disturbances and emplacement of new earthen material. Chemical fingerprinting, in particular REE plus yttrium, is applied across many fields, but predominantlyin tracking the sources of potential environmental contaminants. Materials and methods: The REE normalised patterns (HNO 3 :HF:HCl 3:1:1 digestion, ICP-MS) of two Calcaric Cambisols were compared with those of a Geric Ferralsol (Novic, Technic) originated …
