δ18O values of coexisting brachiopods and fish: Temperature differences and estimates of paleo–water depths

To estimate vertical thermal gradients and paleo–water depths to marine platforms we present a new method based on the difference between δ 18 O values of contemporaneous brachiopod carbonate and fish phosphate. Present-day marine fauna of well-known ecology from the surface to the sea floor record isotopic temperatures that agree with measured temperatures. We predict distributions of isotopic data that result from sampling strategy, basin morphology, and fauna ecology and discuss limitations. Application of the method to the Jurassic Paris-London basin gives vertical thermal variations of up to 14 °C associated with depths varying from a few meters to 170 ± 30 m. Influence of bacteria on the metabolite pattern of phenol in zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio)

Summary An investigation was performed on the potential influence of bacteria in the medium on the metabolism of phenol in zebra fish. The results obtained in vitro and in vivo show that bacteria may influence biotransformation studies of xenobiotics by fish in different manner. First, it was shown that phenol conjugates were deconjugated. Hydrolysis of phenyl glucuronide was observed both in vitro and in vivo. Deconjugation of phenyl sulphate was found to a minor extent merely under in vitro conditions. Second, the xenobiotic itself, in this case phenol, was degradated to CO2. Effect of Cd-containing wood ash on the microflora of coniferous forest humus

The use of wood ash in forestry has been questioned because the cadmium (Cd) concentration of ash, which varies between 1 and 20 mg kg(-1) ash, exceeds the level allowed for fertilizers (3 mg kg(-1)) used in agriculture. To investigate the combined and separated effects of Cd and ash on the forest humus microflora, pumice or wood ash, spiked with a water-soluble (CdCl(2)) or -insoluble (CdO) form of Cd at three levels (0, 400 and 1000 mg kg(-1)), were applied at a fertilization level of 5000 kg ha(-1) in a laboratory microcosm study. Abundance and activity of nitrate reducers in an arable soil are more affected by temporal variation and soil depth than by elevated atmospheric [CO2]

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations ([CO2]) might change the abundance and the function of soil microorganisms in the depth profile of agricultural soils by plant-mediated reactions. The seasonal pattern of abundance and activity of nitrate-reducing bacteria was studied in a Mini-FACE experiment planted with oilseed rape (Brassica napus). Three depths (0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm) were sampled. The effects on epilithic algae of increasing densities of two crayfish species, Austropotamobius italicus and Pacifastacus leniusculus, the latter recently introduced in Spain, have been monitored using riverine enclosures, within a large experimental study on crayfish-macrobenthos interactions in a mountain stream. A 3-month test was carried out for each species using crayfish densities comprising between 0-5 individuals/m2 kept in 1-m2 enclosures. Evolutionary site-number changes of ribosomal DNA loci during speciation: complex scenarios of ancestral and more recent polyploid events.

Genes encoding ribosomal RNA are universal key constituents of eukaryotic genomes, but the number of loci varies between species. We assessed the evolutionary trends in site-number changes of rDNA loci during speciation in a lineage of the cabbage family, characterized by complex scenarios of polyploidy. Our results suggest the existence of constrictions to burst loci amplification in the 5S rDNA family in polyploids and an overall trend to further reduce their number. The 45S rDNA site change in polyploids tells a different story, implying loci amplification in most of the polyploid entities.

Determination of fatty acids and lipid classes in salmon oil by near infrared spectroscopy

International audience; Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was evaluated as a rapid method for the determination of oleic, palmitic, linoleic and linolenic acids as well as omega-3, omega-6, and to predict polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids, together with triacylglycerides, diglycerides, free fatty acids and ergosterol in salmon oil. Embryonic development of corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops

Master's thesis Aquatic Ecology BIO500 - University of Agder 2016 Eggs from corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops were described, photographed and illustrated to characterise the embryonic development of this species. Egg development was divided into 8 stages from fertilisation until hatching with descriptions of key features for each stage. The rate of development in corkwing wrasse eggs at temperatures commonly found along the Norwegian coast (12, 15 and 18 C) was also investigated.
