Decay properties of neutron-deficient isotopes 256, 257Db, 255Rf, 252, 253Lr

Isotopes of dubnium (element 105) with mass numbers A = 256, 257, and 258 were produced by the reaction 209Bi(50Ti,xn) 259-xDb (x = 1, 2, 3) at projectile energies of (4.59-5.08) AMeV. Excitation functions were measured for the 1n, 2n and 3n evaporation channels. The same position of the excitation function was observed for the 1n channel as for the previously measured 1n channel of the reaction 208Pb(50Ti,1n)257Rf. The measured α-decay data of 257Db and its daughter products resulted in the identification of α-decaying isomeric states in 257Db and 253Lr. Two new isotopes, 256Db and 252Lr, were produced at the highest bombarding energies of 4.97 AMeV and 5.08 AMeV. They were identified by d…

Gas phase synthesis of 4d transition metal carbonyl complexes with thermalized fission fragments in single-atom reactions

Abstract The formation of carbonyl complexes using atom-at-a-time quantities of short-lived transition metals from fusion and fission reactions was reported in 2012. Numerous studies focussing on this chemical system, which is also applicable for the superheavy elements followed. We report on a novel two-chamber approach for the synthesis of such complexes that allows spatial decoupling of thermalization and gas-phase carbonyl complex synthesis. Neutron induced fission on 235U and spontaneous fission of 248Cm were employed for the production of the fission products. Measurements of isomeric yield ratios of fission products from proton-induced fission on natU and 232Th via direct ion counting

Independent isomeric yield ratios (IYR) of 81Ge, 96Y, 97Y, 97Nb, 128Sn and 130Sn have been determined in the 25 MeV proton-induced fission of natU and 232Th. The measurements were performed at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility at the University of Jyväskylä. A direct ion counting measurement of the isomeric fission yield ratios was accomplished for the first time, registering the fission products in less than a second after their production. In addition, the IYRs of natU were measured by means of γ-spectroscopy in order to verify the consistency of the recently upgraded experimental setup. The separation of fission products which form anionic species in mineral acids and of uranium and neptunium from samples of neutron-irradiated uranium is described. The method used is extraction chromatography with tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl)-orthophosphoric acid (HDEHP) as extractants and polytrifluoromonochloroethylene powder as the solid support. Studies of short-lived fission products by means of the multistage solvent extraction system SISAK

The multistage solvent extraction system SISAK is described. The system is used for online studies of nuclides with half-lives down to ∼1 s. Some of the chemical separation procedures are presented, and a survey is given on the results obtained so far. The possiblity to gain access to nuclides with even shorter half-lives is also discussed.

Performance of the on-line isotope separation facility HELIOS at the Mainz reactor

Abstract The helium-jet on-line isotope eparation facility HELIOS is in operation at the Mainz reactor for spectroscopic studies on mass separated neutron-rich nuclides far from the line of beta-stability. The basic features and achievements of the facility are reported. A total of 45 isotopes of the elements Rb, Sr, Y, Sn, Sb, Te, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr and Nd have been separated and identified so far. Overall efficiencies up to 2% have been obtained using the integrated skimmer ion source arrangement either in a hollow cathode or in a high temperature surface ionization mode. The delay time for the HELIOS system was determined to be about 1 s.

A ROOT-based analysis tool for measurements of neutron-induced fission products at the IGISOL facility

For the sustainable development of nuclear energy, the handling of used nuclear fuel is a key issue. Innovative fuel cycles are being developed for the transmutation of minor actinides and long-lived fission products. In view of these developments, accurate knowledge of the fuel inventory is necessary. Fission studies at IGISOL/JYFLTRAP: Simulations of the ion guide for neutron-induced fission and comparison with experimental data

For the production of exotic nuclei at the IGISOL facility, an ion guide for neutron-induced fission has been developed and tested in experiments. Fission fragments are produced inside the ion guide and collected using a helium buffer gas. Meanwhile, a GEANT4 model has been developed to simulate the transportation and stopping of the charged fission products. In a recent measurement of neutron-induced fission yields, implantation foils were located at different positions in the ion guide. The gamma spectra from these foils and the fission targets are compared to the results from the GEANT4 simulation.
