Kinetic Roughening in Slow Combustion of Paper

2001

Results of experiments on the dynamics and kinetic roughening of one-dimensional slow-combustion fronts in three grades of paper are reported. Extensive averaging of the data allows a detailed analysis of the spatial and temporal development of the interface fluctuations. The asymptotic scaling properties, on long length and time scales, are well described by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with short-range, uncorrelated noise. To obtain a more detailed picture of the strong-coupling fixed point, characteristic of the KPZ universality class, universal amplitude ratios, and the universal coupling constant are computed from the data and found to be in good agreement with theory. Below …

A New Non-stationary Channel Model Based on Drifted Brownian Random Paths

2014

This paper utilizes Brownian motion (BM) processes with drift to model mobile radio channels under non-stationary conditions. It is assumed that the mobile station (MS) starts moving in a semi-random way, but subject to follow a given direction. This moving scenario is modelled by a BM process with drift (BMD). The starting point of the movement is a fixed point in the two-dimensional (2D) propagation area, while its destination is a random point along a predetermined drift. To model the propagation area, we propose a non-centred one-ring scattering model in which the local scatterers are uniformly distributed on a ring that is not necessarily centred on the MS. The semi-random movement of …

Focus on quantum Einstein gravity

2012

The gravitational asymptotic safety program summarizes the attempts to construct a consistent and predictive quantum theory of gravity within Wilson's generalized framework of renormalization. Its key ingredient is a non-Gaussian fixed point of the renormalization group flow which controls the behavior of the theory at trans-Planckian energies and renders gravity safe from unphysical divergences. Provided that the fixed point comes with a finite number of ultraviolet-attractive (relevant) directions, this construction gives rise to a consistent quantum field theory which is as predictive as an ordinary, perturbatively renormalizable one. This opens up the exciting possibility of establishin…

Stock markets and quantum dynamics: A second quantized description

2009

In this paper we continue our description of stock markets in terms of some non-abelian operators which are used to describe the portfolio of the various traders and other observable quantities. After a first prototype model with only two traders, we discuss a more realistic model of market involving an arbitrary number of traders. For both models we find approximated solutions for the time evolution of the portfolio of each trader. In particular, for the more realistic model, we use the stochastic limit approach and a fixed point like approximation. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

COMMON FIXED POINTS FOR psi-CONTRACTIONS ON PARTIAL METRIC SPACES

2013

We prove some generalized versions of an interesting result of Matthews using conditions of different type in 0-complete partial metric spaces. We give, also, a homotopy result for operators on partial metric spaces.

An existence result for a Neumann problem

2015

The main result of this paper deals with the existence of at least one positive solution for a second order Neumann boundary value problem. Such a result is obtained by using an abstract coincidence point theorem that allows to get our conclusion under non standard conditions on the nonlinearity.

Graphical metric space: a generalized setting in fixed point theory

2016

Building on recent ideas of Jachymski, we work on the notion of graphical metric space and prove an analogous result for the contraction mapping principle. In particular, the triangular inequality is replaced by a weaker one, which is satisfied by only those points which are situated on some path included in the graphical structure associated with the space. Some consequences, examples and an application to integral equations are presented to confirm the significance and unifying power of obtained generalizations.

A Novel Non-Stationary Channel Model Utilizing Brownian Random Paths

2014

This paper proposes a non-stationary channel model in which real-time dynamics of the mobile station (MS) are taken into account. We utilize Brownian motion (BM) processes to model targeted and non-targeted dynamics of the MS. The proposed trajectory model consists of both drift and random components to capture both targeted and non-targeted motions of the MS. The Brownian trajectory model is then employed to provide a non-stationary channel model, in which the scattering effects of the propagation area are modelled by a non-centred one-ring geometric scattering model. The starting point of the motion is a fixed point in the propagation environment, whereas its terminating point is a random…

Common fixed points of mappings satisfying implicit relations in partial metric spaces

2013

Matthews, [S. G. Matthews, Partial metric topology, in: Proc. 8th Summer Conference on General Topology and Applications, in: Ann. New York Acad. Sci., vol. 728, 1994, pp. 183-197], introduced and studied the concept of partial metric space, as a part of the study of denotational semantics of dataflow networks. He also obtained a Banach type fixed point theorem on complete partial metric spaces. Very recently Berinde and Vetro, [V. Berinde, F. Vetro, Common fixed points of mappings satisfying implicit contractive conditions, Fixed Point Theory and Applications 2012, 2012:105], discussed, in the setting of metric and ordered metric spaces, coincidence point and common fixed point theorems fo…

Fixed points for Geraghty-Contractions in partial metric spaces

2015

We establish some fixed point theorems for mappings satisfying Geraghty-type contractive conditions in the setting of partial metric spaces and ordered partial metric spaces. Presented theorems extend and generalize many existing results in the literature. Examples are given showing that these results are proper extensions of the existing ones. c ©2014 All rights reserved.
