Sensitivity of precipitation forecasts to convective parameterization in the October 2007 Flash Flood in the Valencia Region (Eastern Spain)

Abstract. The Valencia region, on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, is an area prone to torrential rains, especially the north of Alicante province and the south of Valencia province. In October 2007, a torrential rain event with accumulated rainfall values exceeding 400 mm in less than 24 h affected the aforementioned areas, producing flash floods that caused extensive economic losses and human casualties. Several simulations of this rain event have been performed with the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) to test the influence of the different convective parameterization scheme implemented in the model on the precipitation forecast.

This paper takes into account the characterisation of ephemeral stream hydrology from Mediterranean environments. The heavy floods that these countries suffer are due to firstly, the physical watershed features (steep slopes, scarced vegetation cover and thin soils) and, secondly, to the intense and variable rainfall. Large quantities of precipitation fall in a matter of hours, or even minutes, over very steep catchments, causing catastrophic flash-floods, with very pointed hydrographs and short time lags. Today’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments increasingly have to manage relatively new access patterns (e.g., large numbers of metadata operations) which general-purpose parallel file systems (PFS) were not optimized for. Burst-buffer file systems aim to solve that challenge by spanning an ad hoc file system across node-local flash storage at compute nodes to relief the PFS from such access patterns. However, existing burst-buffer file systems still support many of the traditional file system features, which are often not required in HPC applications, at the cost of file system performance.
Comparison of high‐speed optical observations of a lightning flash from space and the ground

We analyze a nighttime negative cloud-to-ground lightning flash in Colombia observed from the ground with a high-speed camera at 5,000 images per second and from space by the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) on the International Space Station (ISS), the Lightning Imaging Sensor also on the ISS (ISS-LIS), and the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) on GOES-16. The space instruments measure the oxygen band at 777.4 nm, allowing for direct comparisons of measurements, and the ground-based camera observes in a wide visible band. Abstract We review recent studies on the role played by non-liquid, water-containing matrices on the dynamics and structure of embedded proteins. Two proteins were studied, in water–trehalose matrices: a water-soluble protein (carboxy derivative of horse heart myoglobin) and a membrane protein (reaction centre from Rhodobacter sphaeroides ). Photodynamics in stable complexes composed of a zinc porphyrin tripod and pyridyl porphyrins assembled by multiple coordination bonds

A tripod zinc porphyrin (TPZn(3)) forms a stable 1:1 complex with gold(III) tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (AuTPyP(+)) and free-base tris(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (2H-Py(3)P) in nonpolar solvents. The strong binding of TPZn(3) with AuTPyP(+) or 2H-Py(3)P results from the encapsulation of AuTPyP(+) or 2H-Py(3)P inside the cavity of TPZn(3) through multiple coordination bonds, as indicated by UV-vis-NIR, ESI-MS, (1)H NMR, electrochemistry and computational studies. The binding constants of monomer zinc porphyrin (MPZn) with AuTPyP(+) and 2H-Py(3)P drastically decrease as compared with TPZn(3). International audience; The acknowledged success of the Monod-Wyman-Changeux (MWC) allosteric model stems from its efficacy in accounting for the functional behavior of many complex proteins starting with hemoglobin (the paradigmatic case) and extending to channels and receptors. High Pressure Enhances Hexacoordination in Neuroglobin and Other Globins

The techniques of high applied pressure and flash photolysis have been combined to study ligand rebinding to neuroglobin (Ngb) and tomato Hb, globins that may display a His-Fe-His hexacoordination in the absence of external ligands. High pressure induces a moderate decrease in the His association rate and a large decrease in His dissociation rate, thus leading to an enhancement of the overall His affinity. The overall structural difference between penta- and hexacoordinated globins may be rather small and can be overcome by external modifications such as high pressure. The kinetics and thermodynamics of the 2,6-bis(2-hydroxybenzilidene)cyclohexanone chemical reactions network was studied at different pH values using NMR, UV-vis, continuous irradiation, and flash photolysis. The chemical behavior of the system partially resembles anthocyanins and their analogue compounds. 2,6-Bis(2-hydroxybenzilidene)cyclohexanone exhibits a slow color change from yellow to red styrylflavylium under extreme acidic conditions. The rate constant for this process (5 × 10(-5) s(-1)) is pH independent and controlled by the cis-trans isomerization barrier. Drug-induced photoallergy requires as the first step formation of covalent drug-protein photoadducts. One of the key amino acids involved in this process is tryptophan (Trp). In this context, several diaryl ketones, including 2-benzoylthiophene (BT), [2-(5-benzoyl-5-thienyl)]-2-methylpropanoic methyl ester (TPA methyl ester) and 4-(2-thienylcarbonyl)phenyl]-2-methylpropanoic methyl ester (SUP methyl ester) have been irradiated in the presence of N-BOC-(L)-tryptophan methyl ester.
