RESULTS OF RADIO—TRACKING OF DUCKS IN THE LAKE ENGURE IN SUMMER 1997

1998

ABSTRACT In summer 1997 a project of duck research using radio—telemetry was carried out on the Lake Engure, Latvia. 10 females of Mallards, 10 females of Shovelers, 9 females of Pochards and 6 females of Tufted Ducks were radio—tracked during the period from the hatching of their ducklings till fledging. Information about effect of the harness-type radio-transmitters on different species of ducks has been collected. For 15 ducks home range sizes and distances between nests and range locations were calculated. Mallards used to move further from their nest sites; one Mallard brood after one week spent near the nest site dislocated 8 km to the Southern part of the lake during one day. Problem…

Nest aggregation and reproductive synchrony promote Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni seasonal fitness

2013

Several factors promote coloniality by enhancing the fitness of colony members. In birds, spatial proximity among nests, breeder abundance and reproductive synchrony have been proposed as primary factors responsible for enhanced colonial defence and foraging success, which, in turn, enhance reproductive success. Whether these factors function synergistically or antagonistically remains, however, an open question due to the absence of an integrated analysis of their effects on fitness. We studied a large population of the Lesser Kestrel, Falco naumanni, a facultative colonial species, breeding in colonies of different sizes in their typical pseudo-steppe habitat. We quantified both the singu…

Survival Rates of Young MagpiesPica picain a Mountain Population of Eastern Spain

2007

Abstract. The aim of this study was to estimate the survival of young Magpies between fledging and the next breeding season and to identify some of the factors affecting it. A total of 50 nestlings were colour-ringed in two breeding seasons in the valley of the Pitarque River (Teruel, E Spain), and were monitored weekly until May of the following year. 59 nestlings were also colour-ringed in two nearby localities (4–5 km) to detect possible dispersal to and from our study area. Mark-recapture analyses were used to estimate weekly survival, which was assumed to be constant for periods of four weeks in order to reduce the number of parameters. Models with the effect of time, age class, season…

The effects of experimentally manipulated yolk androgens on growth and immune function of male and female nestling collared flycatchers Ficedula albi…

2009

Hormone-mediated maternal effects may be an important mechanism for adjusting offspring phenotype to particular requirements of the environment. We manipulated the levels of testosterone and androstenedione in the yolk of collared flycatcher Ficedula albicollis eggs to investigate the effects of pre-natal exposure to androgens on growth and immune function. Androgen treatment tended to reduce the growth of males, and enhance the growth of females, as indicated by significant interaction between sex and androgen treatment. Cellular immune function was not affected by androgen treatment or sex. Survival of nestlings until fledging was not related to androgen treatment. Our results indicate th…
