2015

Background The field of dental ceramics for CAD-CAM is enriched with a new innovative material composition having a porous three-dimensional structure of feldspathic ceramic infiltrated with acrylic resins. The aim of this study is to determine the mechanical properties of Polymer-Infiltrated-Ceramic-Network (PICN) and compare its performance with other ceramics and a nano-ceramic resin available for CAD-CAM systems. Material and Methods In this study a total of five different materials for CAD-CAM were investigated. A polymer-infiltrated ceramic (Vita Enamic), a nano-ceramic resin (Lava Ultimate), a feldspathic ceramic (Mark II), a lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS-e max CAD) and finally a Le…

Analysis of the effect of a stress raiser on the strength of a UD flax/epoxy composite in off-axis tension

2014

The effect of stress raisers in the form of a slit-like notch and an open circular hole on the tensile strength of a quasi-UD flax-fiber-reinforced composite is studied experimentally. A finite fracture mechanics approach is applied to determine the intralaminar fracture toughness of the composite and to predict the strength in the presence of stress concentration. Reasonably good agreement of the notch effect predicted using finite fracture mechanics with a coupled strength and toughness fracture criterion and test results is demonstrated.

Effectiveness of stirrups and steel fibres as shear reinforcement

2004

This paper presents the results of experimental tests carried out on rectangular simply supported beams made of hooked steel fibre reinforced concrete with and without stirrups, subjected to two-point symmetrically placed vertical loads. The tests, carried out with controlled displacements, allow one to record complete load-deflection curves by means of which it is possible to deduce information on dissipative capacity and ductile behaviour up to failure. Depending on the amount of transverse reinforcement, volume fraction of fibres added in the mix and shear span, the collapse mechanism is due to predominant shear or flexure, thus showing the influence of the aforementioned structural para…

Mechanical Behaviour of a Green Sandwich Made of Flax Reinforced Polymer Facings and Cork Core

2015

Abstract This work investigates the flexural behavior of a composite sandwich made of flax fibers reinforced skin facings and an agglomerated cork core, to be employed as an eco-friendly solution for the making of structural components of small sailing boats. An experimental mechanical characterization of the strength and stiffness flexural behavior of the proposed sandwich is carried out, providing a comparison of performances from three implemented assembling techniques: hand-lay-up, vacuum bagging and resin infusion. Sandwich beams have been tested under three point bending (TPB) at various span lengths. A procedure is also proposed and implemented to consider the potential influence of …

Salt-fog spray aging of jute-basalt reinforced hybrid structures. Flexural and low velocity impact response

2017

Abstract In this work, a study on the aging resistance of jute and jute-basalt interply hybrid laminates exposed to salt-fog is presented with the aim to investigate the possibility to enhance the durability of natural fiber reinforced composites for marine application by a ply-substitution approach. In particular, jute and basalt/jute reinforced composite plates were manufactured by vacuum assisted resin infusion in two different staking sequences (i.e., intercalated and sandwich-like basalt-jute) and aged under salt fog conditions. The effects of the accelerated aging at increasing times on the mechanical response of laminates were assessed in both quasi static (three point bending) and d…

Mechanical properties of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced plastic after moistening

2012

Abstract The kinetics of moisture sorption under immersion in water at room and elevated temperatures and flexural characteristics of dry (conditionally initial) and wet (moistened up to saturation level) composite material were investigated on flat specimens of polyester based glass fiber-reinforced plastic, cut from I-beam pultruded profile. It was found that the coefficients of diffusion and swelling are different in three principal axis of the composite. The former have the largest value in fiber axis direction, but the latter – in transverse to fiber axis direction out of plane of the layers. The observed difference in kinetics of mass gain and change of volume strain for the specimens…

Static and dynamic mechanical properties of Arundo Donax fillers-epoxy composites

2014

Abstract Aim of this work is to investigate the feasibility of using a natural and inexpensive filler obtained by grinding the culms of Arundo Donax as reinforcement of epoxy resins. The effect of the content and size of Arundo Donax fillers on static and dynamic mechanical properties was evaluated showing that the composites exhibit higher tensile moduli, comparable flexural moduli and lower strength properties in comparison to the neat resin. Moreover, changes in the storage and the loss moduli only above the glass transition temperature (i.e. in the rubbery region) were found while neither significant shifts of tan δ peaks to higher temperatures nor reductions in the peak height of the c…

EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL EVALUATION OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF GFRP SANDWICH PANELS

2007

This work deals with the analysis of the mechanical behaviour of a class of sandwich structures widely employed in marine constructions, constituted by fiber-glass laminate skins over PVC foam or polyester mat cores. In detail, a systematic experimental study and numerical simulations have shown that the theoretical prediction of the strength and the actual failure mechanism of these sandwich structures can be affected by significant errors, specially in the presence of prevalent shear loading. Moreover, because of the low shear stiffness and the elastic constants mismatch of the skins and core material, failure modes and strength are strongly influenced by eventual stresses orthogonal to t…

Shear-to-Moment Interaction in Glass Beams with Open Cross Sections

2018

An experimental investigation regarding the flexural behavior of glass beams with a length of 1,200 mm and rectangular, T-shaped, or I-shaped cross sections is presented and discussed. T-shaped and I-shaped cross sections were obtained by assembling laminated glass (LG) panels of 200 mm depth and 12.76 mm thickness through an acrylic adhesive. Three specimens for each series investigated were tested in flexure, focusing on the flexural and shear response of beams through the determination of the load-deflection curves and crack patterns at rupture. The shear span to depth ratio a/d was 2.25, which is a very low value, and interaction of shear and bending moment occurred during the tests. An…
