Simplified analytical model for flexural response of external R.C. frames with smooth rebars
2018
In this paper an analytical model in a closed form able to reproduce the monotonic flexural response of external RC beam-column joints with smooth rebars is presented. The column is subjected to a constant vertical load and the beam to a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip. The model is based on the flexural behavior of the beam and the column determined adopting a concentrated plasticity hinge model including slippage of the main reinforcing bars of the beam. A simplified bilinear moment-axial force domain is assumed to derive the ultimate moment associated with the design axial force. For the joint, a simple truss model is adopted to predict shear strength and panel …
Influence of cavity type and size of composite restorations on cuspal flexure
2006
Objectives: The present study examines the influence of cavity type, and size of composite restorations on cuspal flexure due to polymerization shrinkage. Methods: Thirty healthy premolars were selected and divided into two experimental groups. Group 1: Mesial, mesiodistal, and MOD cavities were successively prepared in each tooth by means of the SONICSYS approx system (KaVo ®) using a nº 2 (small) diamond tip. Group 2: The same cavity preparation sequence was followed but a nº 3 (medium) tip was used. Cavity preparations were performed and afterwards restored using the same adhesive system and resin composite. Cuspal displacement was measured 15 min after completion of each type of restora…
Quantifying the thermo-mechanical impact of plume arrival on continental break-up
2013
Abstract The arrival of a plume head at Earth's continental lithosphere is often considered to be an important factor for continental break-up. However, the impact of plume impingement on strength and duration of a rift remains unclear. In this study, we quantify the mechanical and thermal influence of a plume (i.e. lithosphere erosion) on continental break-up. To do that we apply the three-dimensional numerical code SLIM3D that features realistic elasto-visco-plastic rheology. We model the thermo-mechanical response of a segment of Earth's lithosphere that is affected both by extension as well as plume-related lithosphere erosion in order to evaluate the influence on the overall force budg…
Analytical prediction of load deflection curves of external steel fibers R/C beam–column joints under monotonic loading
2015
Abstract In this paper a simplified analytical model able to reproduce the flexural behavior of external beam–column joints under monotonic loading is presented, to be used for pushover analysis. The subassemblage (beam, column and joint) is subjected to a constant vertical load acting on the column and to a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip of the beam. The model is specific for hooked steel fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) and is designed to calculate the flexural response in the form of a load–deflection curve, of beam–column subassemblages. No bond failure and shear deformations are considered in the present paper. The model includes shear-to-moment interaction fo…
Flexural response of external R.C. beam-column joints externally strengthened with steel cages
2015
Abstract An experimental and theoretical research referred to the flexural behavior of external R.C. joints strengthened with steel cages constituted by steel angles and battens is presented. The subassemblage (beam, column and joint) was subjected to a constant vertical load acting on the column and to a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip of the beam. The control specimen is without strengthening system and it was designed with weak column and strong beam and overstrength in the joint region. Strengthening cases here studied refer to steel caging in the column and both in the beam and in the column. Cyclic response in term of load–displacement curves, crack patterns …

De Saint-Venant flexure-torsion problem handled by Line Element-less Method (LEM)
2010
In this paper, the De Saint-Venant flexure-torsion problem is developed via a technique by means of a novel complex potential function analytic in all the domain whose real and imaginary parts are related to the shear stresses. The latter feature makes the complex analysis enforceable for the shear problem. Taking full advantage of the double-ended Laurent series involving harmonic polynomials, a novel element-free weak form procedure, labelled Line Element-less Method (LEM), is introduced, imposing that the square of the net flux across the border is minimized with respect to expansion coefficients. Numerical implementation of the LEM results in systems of linear algebraic equations involv…
Extended right colectomy, left colectomy, or segmental left colectomy for splenic flexure carcinomas: a European multicenter propensity score matchin…
2020
Background: The surgical resection of the splenic flexure carcinoma (SFC) is challenging and the optimal surgical procedure for SFCs remains a matter of debate. The present study aimed to compare in a multicenter European sample of patients the short- and long-term outcomes of extended right (ERC) vs. left (LC) vs. segmental left colectomy (SLC) for SFCs. Methods: This retrospective multicenter study analyzed the surgical and oncological outcomes of SFC patients undergoing elective curative intent surgery between 2000 and 2018. Descriptive and exploratory analyses were first conducted on the whole sample. Outcomes of the different procedures (ERC vs. LC vs. SLC) were then compared using pro…
Stainless steel grids for confinement of clay brick masonry columns
2016
This work presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behavior of 21 solid clay brick columns internally strengthened by stainless steel grids placed in the horizontal joints of mortar. This reinforcing technique can be applied as a constructive technique for new construction or as a retrofitting technique for existing structures (old structures to be reconstructed by original constructive method and internal reinforcement). Monotonic compressive loading tests were carried out under concentric and eccentric load. The effects of different numbers of steel grids and eccentricity of the external load were examined. Also, a detailed characterization of the constituent materials…
Flexural Response of RC Beams Failing in Shear
2020
In this paper, an analytical model to determine the flexural response of simply supported RC beams under four-point bending tests failing in flexure and shear is presented. The model is able to provide load-deflection curves, including also the shear contributions, which are determined assuming a kinematic rigid plastic model able to consider different strength contributions such as the concrete, the dowel action, and transverse reinforcement with progressive yielding. For each contribution, a physical explanation is provided to link the strength evaluation with a specific kinematic evolution for the determination of the overall response of RC beams under combined shear and flexural loads. …
