Changes in microflora in dental plaque from cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and the relationship of these changes with mucositis: a pilot stu…

2015

Background: To assess changes in oral microflora in dental plaque from cancer patients within 7 days of the first course of chemotherapy, and the relationship of the changes with mucositis. Material and Methods: Thirty cancer patients, divided into a test group undergoing chemotherapy and a control group no undergoing chemotherapy, were enrolled in this pilot study. Oral microflora were cultured from three samples of dental plaque at t0 (before chemotherapy), t1 (1 day after chemotherapy) and t2 (7 days after chemotherapy). Single and crossed descriptive analyses were used to establish prevalence, and the χ 2 test was used to establish the statistical significance of the differences observe…

Women With and Without Metabolic Disorder Differ in Their Gut Microbiota Composition

2012

The aim of this study was to investigate whether overweight/obese women in metabolic disorder group (MDG, n = 27) differ in their gut microbiota composition from overweight/obese women in non-metabolic disorder group (NMDG, n = 47) and normal weight women group (NWG, n = 11). Gut microbiota was profiled from fecal samples by 16S rRNA fluorescence in situ hybridization and flow cytometry in 85 premenopausal women. Body composition was measured by bioimpedance, and dietary intakes were collected via food diaries. Standard procedures were used to assess plasma glucose, serum insulin, lipids, and inflammatory status. We found that the proportion of bacteria belonging to Eubacterium rectale-Clos…

Immunosenescence and anti-immunosenescence therapies: the case of probiotics.

2008

ABSTRACT Aging is a complex process that negatively impacts the development of the immune system and its ability to function. Progressive changes in the T and B cell systems over the life span have a major impact on the capacity to respond to immune challenge. These cumulative age-associated changes in immune competence are termed immunosenescence. This process is mostly characterized by: (1) shrinkage of the T cell repertoire and accumulation of oligoclonal expansions of memory/effector cells directed toward ubiquitary infectious agents; (2) involution of the thymus and the exhaustion of naive T cells; and (3) chronic inflammatory status. Here we discuss possible strategies to counteract t…

Propagation of Calendula maritima Guss. (Asteraceae) through Biotechnological Techniques for Possible Usage in Phytotherapy

2022

The genus Calendula (Asteraceae) includes several species that are renowned for their therapeutic properties and/or use as ingredients in the preparation of cosmetics. The rare and critically endangered sea marigold, Calendula maritima Guss., an endemic species from Western Sicily, has also been recognized as a potential “farm plant species” for several important compounds used in cosmetics. However, the few remnant populations of this species are currently threatened with extinction because of several factors, such as hybridization with the congeneric species Calendula suffruticosa subsp. fulgida (Raf.) Guadagno and anthropogenic disturbance of its habitat. Therefore, in order to preserve …

Se aportan nueve primeras citas concretas para la flora provincial, siendo tres de ellas novedades asimismo para la Comunidad Valenciana. Además, se proponen dos nuevas combinaciones: Nepeta mallophora subsp. bourgaei (Briq.) M.B. Crespo, Camuñas & J.C. Cristóbal, y N. mallophora subsp. anticaria (Ladero & Rivas Goday ex Ubera & Valdés) M.B. Crespo, Camuñas & J.C. Cristóbal. Data are reported on distribution and ecology of new or poorly known taxa of Alicante province (E of Spain). Nine species are cited for the first time in that territory, being three of them also new f…
