The bryophyte flora of the city of Valencia (Eastern Spain)

Bryophytes constitute an important part of the unmanaged plant diversity of urban areas, however, it is generally overlooked and poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the urban bryoflora of Valencia, the third most important Spanish city. A total of 1,178 bryophyte samples from 94 sampling sites were identified rendering 102 taxa, 96 mosses and 6 liverworts. Despite the high overall taxon richness, the number of taxa per locality was rather low, 12.53±8.06. The sites that harbored the highest taxon richness were those with a variety of natural, old and relatively unmanaged substrates such as the Botanical Garden, Viveros Garden and the Turia River Garden. Teucrium pumilum y T. libanitis son dos especies que han sido citadas como presentes en la provincia de Valencia desde mediados del siglo XX, para los yesos que afloran en la comarca del Valle de Ayora-Cofrentes. El análisis de las etiquetas de los pliegos de los herbarios no es concluyente; ningún pliego testigo certificaría la presencia de estas especies. La determinación de visu por parte de Rivas Goday, y su inclusión en una tabla de inventarios fitosociológica, son el único fundamento de su existencia en la zona en algún momento determinado de la reciente historia botánica española. El género Gagea Salisb. presenta una taxonomía compleja debido a que los caracteres morfológicos habitualmente empleados muestran una variabilidad elevada con escaso valor diagnóstico, por lo que su interpretación ha dado lugar a un número elevado de sinónimos por la profusión de nombres asignados a los ejemplares recolectados en estados de desarrollo poco comparables, condicionados por diferentes procesos biológicos como la apomixis, la hibridación, el heterogéneo desarrollo ontogenético y la falta o limitada floración, suplida por una multiplicación vegetativa, en respuesta a las condiciones ambientales. El origen de las especies naturalizadas en las floras valencianas (E de la Península Ibérica)

Se ha estudiado la proporción de plantas exóticas en las diferentes floras publicadas sobre la Comunidad Valenciana, así como la frecuencia relativa de las diferentes regiones de origen de los elementos naturalizados. Los datos de las diferentes áreas estudiadas (subregiones) se comparan con los obtenidos para el total de la flora de la Comunidad Valenciana. Abstract The new charophyte species for Latvia, Chara polyacantha A. Braun, was described. This species was found in Lake Engure, the third largest lake of Latvia. In 2010, C.†polyacantha covered small, approximately 25 m2 patch, growing both in a monodominant stand and mixed with C. tomentosa in the central part of the lake.
Plant hunting: exploring the behaviour of amateur botanists in the field

We asked what are the behavioural and logistic preferences of professional and amateur botanists when exploring flora in the field. We extracted temporal and spatial data on vas- cular plant species occurrences from three datasets of Sicilian flora: a subset of iNaturalist, a dataset collected by a Facebook group focused on the flora of Sicily and a subset of the professional database European Vegetation Archive. We used the time span of individual contributor’s activity as a proxy of their commitment to collecting information about the flora of Sicily. Background: It has long been recognised that the Alps have strong biogeographical links to Asia. Aims: We investigate here whether the two areas are connected either through southern (mountain chains between the Alps and the Himalayas) or through northern regions. Methods: We compiled the geographical distribution of plant genera growing both in the Alps and the Himalayas, and outside these two regions. This compilation was used to search for molecular phylogenetic literature which was screened for area relationships informative for our purposes.
