Study of the alien flora of the urban area of Palermo (Sicily)
2016
Alien plants are an integral part of the Mediterranean agricultural and urban landscape. Taking into account that man is an active voluntary or involuntary carrier of plant diasporas, cities and areas where human activity is predominant represent preferential targets for the study of new plant introductions. In addition, some species as Pennisetum setaceum (Forssk.) Chiov. and Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., initially exclusive to high disturbed habitats, succeeded in penetrating in cliffs, degraded maquis and garrigues characterizing them. Thus the importance of studying these areas to predict future colonization of more natural habitats. Starting from literature and integrating it with f…

Silene nefelites (Caryophyllaceae) a new annual species from Sicily
2014
A new species of Silene sect. Dipterosperma, named S. nefelites C. Brullo, S. Brullo, Giusso & Ilardi spec. nova, from Sicily is described and illustrated. Some of the characteristics are pinnately nerved leaves, 10–25 mm long bracts and 10– 15 mm long filaments. It is a therophyte occurring on the top of Mt. Erice, near Trapani, where it grows on calcareous rocky stands. Its relationships with S. colorata and allied species are also examined. A key to the Sicilian species belonging to S. sect. Dipterosperma is provided Eine neue Art von Silene sect.
2010
Distributive and ecological notes on some rare species of the Sicilian vascular flora. In this paper we point out some new populations of some vascular species found during floristic investigations carried out mostly in the inland of Sicily. For each taxon we provide also data regarding ecological characterization and geographical distribution in the island. Among this taxa, three are Sicilian endemics [Brassica villosa Biv. subsp. tinei (Lojac.) Raimondo et Mazzola, Erysimum metlesicsii Polatschek and Euphorbia papillaris (Boiss.) Raffaelli et Ricceri], four species of biogeographical importance [Allium cupanii Raf., Chaenorhinum rupestre (Guss.) Speta, Sedum gypsicola Boiss. et Reuter and…
La scelta delle piante destinate al verde ornamentale tra percezioni e cambiamenti: Anthosart green tool, uno strumento per conoscere, selezionare, a…
2019
The presence and importance of plant life on the planet does not seem to reach our sensory perception, therefore activate reactions of interest, and correct ecological behaviour. The increasing number of extinct species witnesses the human oblivion towards ecosystems. The concept of plant blindness describes the phenomenon that produces significant consequences on nature conservation. Urban green infrastructure, part of our daily life, is the right place to re-connect with plant systems. Designing and creating “built green” by means of nature-based solutions and local species pool is the main goal of Anthosart green tool, a free and user-friendly on-line tool, which can be useful for design…

La flora vascolare delle Rocche di Entella (entroterra della Sicilia occidentale)
2011
We present the results of a study on the vascular flora of the Rocche di Entella (Contessa Entellina, Palermo province); this biotope, extending over an area of 178 hectares and including a Nature Reserve, has been recognized as a Site of Community Interest (ITA020042). The biotope is characterized by the Messinian gypseous-sulphureous series and falls within the lower mesomediterranean bioclimatic belt, with upper dry ombrotype, locally tending towards thermomediterranean thermotype. Local landscape is affected by prolonged historical exploitation of the territory, which led to the impoverishment of climacic forest communities, almost totally replaced by secondary vegetation (grasslands) a…
Impact of information technology on future floras
2009
Some important facilities offered by the information technology to innovate the development of traditional floras are illustrated and discussed. These include: random access interactive tools for the identification of species, low cost, easy updating, virtually unlimited space for high resolution images and texts, on-line utilities, strong synergy between authors and users. It is argued that the combination of printed books with integrated digital utilities and data-sources is the most desirable structure for future floras.
Schede per la flora ornamentale siciliana. 61-67
2013
With the aim to improve the knowledge of the ornamental flora of Sicily, a series of reports on the most rare and significant species found in the historic or public gardens and parks has been started since 2001. The plants taken in consideration are examined as far as taxonomy, geographical origin, biology, ecology are concerned, also taking into account their condition in Sicily with respect to introduction, sanitary status, occurrence, etc... Furthermore, germplasm conservation is, when possible, provided in the Botanical Garden of Palermo. Each taxon is treated in a single report. Here the reports 61-67, by F. Argento, M.R. Cucco, E. Di Gristina & R. Oliveri, are presented. These concer…
Aspetti distributivi e fitosociologici di Brassica incana (Brassicaceae, Magnoliophyta) in Sicilia
2009
The authors report two new stations of Brassica incana in Sicily and analyze the relevant synecological issues. This species, subendemic in ex Yugoslavia, Greece and Italy, characterizes a new subassociation in Euphorbietum dendroidis, phytocoenosis belonging to the alliance Oleo sylvestris-Ceratonion siliquae. Brassica incana, in the shrubs formations with Euphorbia dendroides, Rhamnus alaternus, Pistacia terebinthus and Olea europaea var. sylvestris, has high values of abundance-dominance.
